그리스 신화 속, 하늘을 떠받치는 거인 아틀라스가 돌이 돼 만들어졌다는 아틀라스 산맥. 아프리카 북서부에 모로코, 알제리, 튀니지에 걸쳐 동서로 2,400km를 뻗어 있다. 아틀라스 산맥을 넘어 도착한 곳은 아이트 벤 하두라고 불리는 크사르다. 크사르는 북아프리카의 요새화된 전통 마을을 뜻하는데 아이트 벤 하두는 모로코의 대표적인 크사르다. 지금은 허물어졌지만 옛날에는 큰 정문과 성벽으로 외부와 차단돼 있었다. 아이트 벤 하두 안에서는 카스바라고 불리는 건물을 쉽게 만날 수 있다. 카스바는 북아프리카 지역에서 통상적으로 대저택을 말하는데 주로 권력자나 종교지도자들이 살던 집이다. 카스바는 3~4층 구조로 되어 있으며 대체로 창문의 크기가 작다. 그리고 카스바마다 축사가 있어 다양한 가축들을 기르고 있다. 네 귀퉁이에 탑을 가진 사각형의 높이 솟은 건물이 카스바다. 일반 가옥과는 확연히 구분된다. “이것은 옛날 사람들이 어떻게 카스바 담을 높게 쌓았는지 보여주는 상자입니다. 먼저 상자 안에 흙을 넣습니다. 이런 식으로 흙을 채우고 그 다음 상자를 벗겨내면 벽돌모양이 됩니다. 그런 식으로 계속해서 쌓아올리는 거죠.“ 카스바 입구의 벽 두께가 무척 두껍다. ”벽이 이렇게 두껍기 때문에 내부에서는 시원함을 느낄 수 있습니다. 밖으로 나가게 되면 더운데 말이죠. 내부는 훨씬 시원하죠.“ 세찬 바람을 맞으며 사람들이 제일 꼭대기 건물로 향한다. 이곳은 마을 공동의 곡식 저장 창고라고 한다. 강 건너편에 마을이 생기면서 거주민들 대부분이 이주하고 현재는 10여 가구만 살고 있다. 주민 대부분이 관광객을 상대로 기념품을 팔고 있다. 아이트 벤 하두는 1987년 유네스코 세계문화유산으로 지정되었다. 또한 '아라비아의 로렌스' '미이라' '글래디에이터' 등의 영화촬영 장소로 유명세를 타면서 해마다 수십만 명의 관광객이 몰려오고 있다. 일부 카스바는 호텔로 사용되고 있는데 여행객들은 이곳에서 하룻밤을 보내며 마치 중세 모로코의 귀족이 된 듯한 느낌을 받을 수 있다. 카스바의 옥상 건물 밖을 감시하던 4개의 전망대는 이제 새들의 차지가 됐다. 천 년을 이어온 요새마을, 아이트 벤 하두의 하루가 저문다.

La médina de Fès : la plus grandes vieilles villes du monde
#Fès est la ville #musulmane la plus ancienne au #Maroc. Elle fut fondée en 788 par Idriss ben #Abdellah, le fondateur de la première #dynastie musulmane au Maghreb (les Idrissides). Son fils, Moulay Idriss II dota la ville de #mosquées et de #fontaines.
En 857, #Fatima Fihria, fille d'un riche marchand kairaouanais, construit à #Fès la #médersa El Karawiyne, la plus ancinne #université au monde. Embellie par les #Almoravides et les #Almohades, Fès devient la #capitale des #Mérinides qui fondèrent Fès El Jedid en 1276, et dotèrent la médina de plusieurs #médersas, de #fontaines et de #mosquées. Sous les Ouattassides, #Fès demeura également une cité prospère mais sous les Saadiens, elle fut eclipsée par #Marrakech, devenu le centre culturel, religieux et politique du royaume. #Meknès, #Tétouan, #Tanger et toutes les grandes villes du nord connurent une période d'assoupissement sous les #Saadiens, et seuls les grandes villes du Sud ( #Marrakech, #Taroudant, #Agadir et #Zagora) connurent une prospérité. En 1522, Fès souffrit d'un terrible tremblement de terre. Sous les #Alaouites, Fès connut une certaine importance, puisqu'elle fut la capitale du premier souverain alaouite, Moulay Rachid. Sous le règne de son frère et successeur, Moulay #Ismaïl, les incessantes rébellions de Fès contre le Makhzen, appareil de l'État, entrainèrent Moulay Ismaïl à une fermeture avec #Fès. Ses sucesseurs lui préfèrent Fès, #Essaouira ou #Marrakech. En 1912, le traité de #Fès ordonna que le #Maroc soit sous colonisé par les #Espagnols au nord et au sud, et les #Français au centre. Aujourd'hui, Fès est une cité de 1 400 000 habitants et c'est la troisième plus grande ville du #Maroc après #Casablanca et #Rabat.

William Hague: hostage situation in Algeria 'extremely dangerous'
Foreign Secretary William Hague says the safety of those involved is the government's absolute priority and it will work around the clock to resolve this crisis.
Speaking to reporters in Sydney, Foreign Secretary William Hague confirmed that a number of British nationals were involved in the incident in which two people are believed to have been killed.

A militant group claimed responsibility for the rare attack on one of oil-rich Algeria's energy facilities, saying it came in revenge for the North African nation's support for France's military operation against al-Qaeda linked rebels in neighbouring Mali.
The militants said they were holding 41 foreigners from the energy complex, including seven Americans.
The group, called Katibah Moulathamine, or the Masked Brigade, phoned a Mauritanian news outlet to say one of its affiliates had carried out the operation at the Ain Amenas gas field, located 800 miles south of Algiers, the Algerian capital, and that France must cease its intervention in Mali to ensure the safety of the hostages.
