Ramblin' Randy in Somaliland: Laas Geel caves
Somaliland’s 5,000 year old rock paintings
Somaliland has some of the best-preserved rock paintings in Africa but only a few intrepid travelers have seen them.
French archaeologists discovered them in 2002, more than 5,000 years after they were made.
Al Jazeera’s Catherine Soi reports from Hargeisa, Somaliland.

Explore Somalia 2020 | 10 Reasons Why You Must Visit Somalia!
Welcome to my channel and this week’s video is about Explore Somalia 2020, 10 Reasons Why You Must Visit Somalia!
Somalia often gets a bad reputation but I had a wonderful experience each of the three trips I took to Somalia and Somaliland.
I had this video of my true adventures to Somalia will encourage you to see the truth of Somalia and not for how the media makes it appear.
With FCOs and foreign offices across the globe still advising against all travel to the war-plagued, drought-prone, and poverty-stricken lands of Somalia, it’s perhaps difficult to see how this nation on the tip of the African Horn will ever be open for business again.
But with all-new military offensives against the pockets of Islamic extremism in the works, a stable government in place (the first since the end of the Somalian Civil War), and recent drops down the rankings of the fragile states index, there might just be a glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel.
And if those hopes ever do come to fruition, intrepid folk can rest assured there’s plenty to see here.
Ranging from the urban sprawl of Mogadishu to the cloud-toped, camel-spotted peaks of the Cal Madow ranges in the north, this country is untouched and undeveloped; a picture of what Africa once was before the onset of mass safari-going.
All the newspapers & media say it is, but after visiting 3 times to Somalia, I discovered something different...
In this Somalia Travel Vlog 2020, I will explain you about How to Travel to Somalia? Tips for Somalia travel budget, Somalia top attractions, Things to see and do in Somalia. Best places to visit in Somalia.
This is Somalia Travel reviews for your future Somalia Vacation planning.

Somalia:
Somalia (/səˈmɑːliə/ sə-MAH-lee-ə; Somali: Soomaaliya; Arabic: الصومال, romanized: aṣ-Ṣūmāl), officially the Federal Republic of Somalia (Somali: Jamhuuriyadda Federaalka Soomaaliya; Arabic: جمهورية الصومال الاتحادية, romanized: Jumhūrīyat aṣ-Ṣūmāl al-Itihadiya) is a sovereign country located in the Horn of Africa. It is bordered by Ethiopia to the west, the Gulf of Aden to the north, the Guardafui Channel and Somali Sea to the east, and Kenya to the southwest. The country claims a border with Djibouti through the disputed territory of Somaliland. Somalia has the longest coastline on Africa's mainland, and its terrain consists mainly of plateaus, plains, and highlands. Climatically, hot conditions prevail year-round, with periodic monsoon winds and irregular rainfall.

Hargeisa | laas geel paintings | somaliland is NOT what you think | hargeisa places to visit
Laas Geel (Somali: Laas Geel), also spelled Laas Gaal, are cave formations on the rural outskirts of Hargeisa, Somaliland (situated in the Woqooyi Galbeed region of the self-declared but internationally unrecognised Republic of Somaliland). They contain some of the earliest known cave paintings in the Horn of Africa. Laas Geel's rock art is estimated to date to somewhere between 9,000 and 3,000 years BC.
During November and December 2002, an archaeological survey was carried out in Somaliland by a French team of researchers. The expedition's objective was to search for rock shelters and caves, that contain archaeological sediments and infills in order to document the historical period when production economy appeared in this part of the Horn of Africa (circa 5,000 to 2,000 years BC). During the course of the survey, the excavation team discovered the Laas Geel cave paintings, that encompass an area of ten rock alcoves (caves).[1] In an excellent state of preservation, the rock art depicts wild animals and decorated cattle (cows and bulls). They also feature herders, who are believed to be the creators of the paintings.[2] Laas Geel's rock art is executed in the same distinctive Ethiopian-Arabian style as the Dhambalin and Karinhegane cave paintings that are also situated in Somaliland.[3]
Although the Laas Geel rock art had been known to the area's inhabitants for centuries, its existence only came to international attention after the 2002 discovery. In November 2003, a mission returned to Laas Geel and a team of experts undertook a detailed study of the paintings in their prehistoric context.
Somaliland in general, is home to numerous such archaeological sites and megalithic structures, with similar rock art found at Haadh, Gudmo Biyo Cas, Dhambalin, Dhagah Maroodi and numerous other sites, while ancient edifices are, among others, found at Sheikh, Aynabo, Aw-Barkhadle, Ancient Amud, Heis, Maydh, Haylan, Qa’ableh, Qombo'ul and El Ayo.[4] However, many of these old structures have yet to be properly explored, a process which would help shed further light on local history and facilitate their preservation for posterity.
The Laas Geel cave paintings are thought to be some of the most vivid rock art in Africa. Among other things, they depict cattle in ceremonial robes accompanied by humans, who are believed to have been inhabitants of the region. The necks of the cattle are embellished with a kind of plastron. Some of the cattle are also portrayed wearing decorative robes. Besides long-horned cattle, the rock art also shows an image of a domesticated dog, several paintings of Canidae as well as a giraffe.[1] The site is excellently preserved due to the location of the paintings which are covered by the granite overhangs

SOMALI Ancient Rock Paintings in the Land of Punt, Laas Gueel Caves.
Laas Gaal (Somali: Laas Geel) is a complex of caves and rock shelters in a region in northwestern Somalia that is famous for its cave paintings. The caves are located in a rural area on the outskirts of Hargeisa, and contain some of the earliest known rock art in the Horn of Africa and the African continent in general. Laas Gaal's cave paintings are estimated to date back to somewhere between 9,000--8,000 and 3,000 BCE.
Simon Reeve Author and broadcaster, Places That Don't Exist who visited the autonomous northern State of Somaliland , said Even under the scorching sun, the paintings had strong, vibrant colours and stark outlines, showing the ancient inhabitants of the area worshipping cattle.
Laas Ga'al, it transpires, is probably the most significant Neolithic rock painting site in the whole of Africa.
Simon Reeve have made a documentary and have seen The Ancient Rock Paintings recently discovered at Laas Ga'al outside Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland.

Somaliland:10,000 year old Paintings in Laasgeel? By Drew Binsky
WOWOWOW -- I cannot believe what I just saw.
Somewhere in the middle of the hot Somaliland desert is a complex set of caves (called Las Geel), where the walls are beautifully decorated with 450+ ancient paintings of animals & humans. This site was recently discovered by a French explorer in 2003, and after close examination & in depth research, archeologists have said these paintings are between 7,000 - 11,000 years old. Do you realize how old that is?! That's older than the Pyramids of Giza!!!
The best part about the experience is the fact that I was ALONE with NOBODY ELSE around me. If this site was in Europe, or any country more accessible than Somaliland, it would easily draw tens of millions of tourists per year.
It's worth coming to Somaliland just to see these caves -- but there is so much more beauty that this country has to offer. Have I mentioned the pristine beaches along the Gulf of Aden?
Huge thanks to my friends at Damal Hotel for helping out with accommodations and organizing these tours. If you come here, they will help you out as well!
