No mans land Mauritania to Western Sahara - Part 3
No mans land way through between Mauritania and Western Sahara. This road is surrounded by land mines.
Being followed while reporting in Laayoune, Western Sahara; 5/7/15.
After the Clinton Global Initiative meeting in Marrakech, Morocco (on May 6 and May 7, 2015), I decided to visit the Moroccan-occupied territory of Western Sahara, where one of the meeting’s biggest sponsors, the government-owned phosphate company OCP, operates a mine.
The Moroccan authorities have been criticized for restricting the press, and they are especially sensitive to reporting on Western Sahara, according to international NGOs.
Sure enough, almost as soon as I arrived in the Western Sahara capital city of Laayoune, I found myself being followed by three vehicles that my guide, a human rights activist named Lakhal Mohamed Salem, identified as being driven by members of the Moroccan intelligence service.
“Here, it is very, very difficult to meet with journalists and also with foreign observers,” Salem told me. “The Moroccan secret service follow us in the car and sometimes they stop us and sometimes they take our cars off and they kick the foreigners who are with us out of Western Sahara.”
When I returned home to Washington, I emailed the Moroccan embassy in Washington asking whether I was followed by Moroccan government agents and, if so, why.
A spokeswoman responded, but didn’t answer the question directly, instead writing: “We are pleased to hear that you traveled to Sahara and hope you had an enjoyable experience in Morocco. We are an open country, and it is certainly not Morocco’s policy to follow visitors.”
Trip Dakhla Laayoune Tarfaya Khenifiss Casamar Ile Dragon Dune Blanche Portorico
Page Facebook :
Dakhla = From beauty to light facing the ocean, bordered by huge beaches of about 10 km. Here, the softness is that of the fine sand, the caress of the sun, we live the paradise all the year at 3 o'clock of the main European cities.
Dakhla is a city located in the south of Morocco. As part of the current Moroccan administration, it is the capital of the region of Dakhla - Oued Eddahab and the province of Oued Ed-Dahab. The city is best known for its tourist attractions and has been ranked as the world's leading water sports spot since 2014.
Laayoune = At the edge of the Atlantic Ocean and at the doors of the Sahara, Laayoune the city of sands making the meeting between sand of beach and sand of the desert welcomes the visitors in a naturally splendid and varied scenery.
Tarfaya = a jewel still deserted, along the Atlantic coast, to Tarfaya deserves a detour, between ocean and desert, a world of contrasts really puzzling Tarfaya away from the world, isolated city, wind corridor, between sea and desert, however remains a perennial small fishing port that faces the Canary Islands.
Tan-Tan = From the desert to the ocean, passing through the oases crossing the southern rivers under an arid sun, everything is perfect for a complete tourism, this city is made to welcome you all summer long. It is a city with a very low population density. This city is known for its port which is 25 km from the city.
El Ouatia = (also called Tan-Tan Beach), which has a fishing port and merchandise, fish processing industrial facilities and a large beach.
Oued Chbika = 50 kilometers south of the city of Tan-Tan, towards Laayoune, we discover, in the middle of magnificent dunes, Oued Chbika. Great beaches, cliffs, sand dunes, a breathtaking landscape. Oued Chbika has the advantage of being at the roadside and owning a natural park of migratory birds such as the flamingo, the great cormorant, the black scoter and the little penguin.
Akhfenir = Located 112 km south of Tan-Tan, the peaceful village Akhfenir is a real Eden that is a delight for cane fishing enthusiasts.
A hundred professional and amateur fishermen meet every day along the coastline between Oued Chibka and Akhfenir renowned for its abundance of fish, because of the total absence of fishing boats in the coastal waters of this region, and are inaccessible to ships due to very strong rocks and waves. For the former it is a source of life, while for the latter it is a hobby that requires a lot of sacrifices, and who do not hesitate to take the road to cross hundreds of kilometers to enjoy an open-air adventure in this out of time area with breathtaking natural landscapes and cliffs.
Casamar = The house of the sea or Casamar. This house was built by the English navigator McKenzie in 1882. It is thus an important monument in the history of Tarfaya. Although it is a valuable tourist attraction, this monument is perishing, but no attempt has been made to save it.
PK 25 = Situated on the lagoon side, this car park is 25 km from Dakhla, hence its name. It is at the edge of a beautiful beach, the large Trouk Island (Dragon Island) just in front of the site is within walking distance at low tide. Many motorhomes stay there all winter. It must be said that this place seduces, in addition to its lagoon and its immense beaches, by the mildness of its climate. The average maximum temperatures vary between 22 ° C and 27 ° C.
The white dune = On the road to Mauritania 30 km from Dakhla, discover the white dune, an amazing natural phenomenon erected in the middle of the lagoon. This wild site is also a favorite spot for flamingos. A simply beautiful place with a breathtaking decor. At the heart of this haven of peace that has preserved its wildness you can walk along the lagoon, swim and picnic. On site you will find many kitesurfing and windsurfing.
Puerto Rico = About sixty miles south of Dakhla, Puerto Rico is a beautiful beach of golden sand and crystal clear water. Located on the Tropic of Cancer, this is the ideal place for a Saharan bivouac. Further south, do not miss the beach of Puertito, a beautiful stretch of white sand, a beautiful place to spend unforgettable moments that will remain forever etched in your memory.
Sebkhet Imlily is a wetland located about forty kilometers south of El Argoub; it was already known to the local population (Province of Oued Ad-Dahab) and has been rediscovered after the relief, in recent years, security measures in this very sensitive part of the national territory. Open access and relatively easy now.

Stage 6 Fort Bou Jeriff - Laayoune
It seems this year the physical punishment just will not stop. Another day, another draining stage.
The day started with the crossing of the legendary Plage Blanche, a remote 50 km long beach battered by the waves and winds of the Atlantic Ocean. Rising tide meant that the dry part of the beach was soft and the going was tougher than expected. The bikes were squirmy and cars overheated easily as they struggled to keep pace along the waterline. Once off the beach the stage continued over a network of rocky path used to carry supplies into coastal fishing camps. Navigational mistakes proved to be costly as at least one rider drowned their bike in a river estuary. Next the caravan had to make some distance to move close to the city of Laayoune. But even the pavement provided no respite for the weary crews as the gail force side wind was relentless and the road was covered in sand drifts. Finally another 130 km long off road section made sure everyone was running on empty by the time they reached the bivouac. The motorbike race standings changed significantly as two of the leaders dropped out due to exhaustion and injuries.
Prior to the evening meeting the Lite rally winners were handed their rewards and lively celebration lasted well into the night.
Tomorrow's stage is composed of a long liaison and a short special section. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and the competitors will be able to cover the day at a more relaxed pace.

Stage 7 Laayoune - Dakhla
Finally a stage with a shorter and easier off road section! The caravan proceeded on the blacktop south towards the city of Dakhla with a special section on flat, wind swept plains short distance from the bivouac. The easy terrain perhaps relaxed the concentration of one of the riders a little too much as he had a high speed crash after hitting a hidden dip at a hight speed. Fortunately the check up at the local hospital showed no injuries other than bruised back. Otherwise not much has changed in the standings.
