Australian World War Two History, Labuan Island, Borneo, Malaysia
I visit the Labaun War Memorial and Surrender Point with local expat Australian Peter Searle.
Peter discusses the Sandakan Death March, the greatest single atrocity committed against Australians in war. It is believed that almost
3,600 Indonesians, 1,787 Australians, and 641 British prisoners died at, or between, Sandakan and Ranau.
At Surrender Point on Labuan, the 32nd Japanese Southern Army surrendered to the 9th Division Australian Imperial Forces on 9th September 1945 which led to the end of World War II in Borneo.
The Australian 9th Division, Rats of Tobruk, were heavily involved in reconstructing British North Borneo and rebuilt and re-established a considerable amount of civil infrastructure. The division developed a warm relationship with the local people and its efforts were recognised by the incorporation of the division's colour patch in the coat of arms of the new Colony of British Borneo. These arms were used until British Borneo became the Malaysian state of Sabah in 1963.
A big thank you to Historian, Lynette Silver for clarifying some historical points via email. For more information on any of the above history visit:

PLACES TO VISIT IN LABUAN
PEACE PARK
----------
Peace Park at Layang-Layangan is situated close to Surrender Point,
the place where the 32nd Japanese Southern Army surrendered to the 9th Australian Imperial Forces on 9 September 1945.
The Japanese arrived at Labuan on January 1, 1942, less than a month after they had started their campaign in Malaya at Kota Bharu.
They took formal possession of the island on the 3rd, having faced no resistance.
The Peace Park was built as a memorial and also as a renunciation of the horrors of war.
It is dominated by the memorial mound which is surrounded by landscaped gardens and pavilions.
Small ponds with stone bridges and park seats are all Japanese-inspired.
A bronze plaque commemorating the surrender is mounted on a stone slab near the entrance.
SURRENDER POINT
---------------
On 10 june 1945 Australian soldiers landed on Labuan Island and Brunei Bay.
The objectives were to clear the Japanese from the region, establish and advanced naval base and secure oil and rubber resources.
In a well co-coordinated assault, the Australians greatly outnumbered the Japanese and within a week all major local resistance
had been eliminated.
On 10 September 1945, Labuan, Borneo, Lieutenant General Masao Baba, Commander of the Japanese 7 Army and Supreme Commander of Japanese Forces in Borneo, arrived at Labuan to surrender the forces under his command to Major General Wootten.
The official surrender ceremony was held in this very spot on the afternoon of 10 September 1945 and attended by
group Captain C.W Pearce and Squadron leader J.S. St. Heaps of Sydney representing the R.A.A.F.
LABUAN BIRD PARK
----------------
The Labuan Bird Park is located near the Chimney at Tanjung Kubong.
It has three large dome-shaped cages surrounded by beautiful landscaping.
The park is home to many species of Borneo birds most likely to be encountered by bird watchers.
There are plans to collect a good percentage of the 580 species of birds found in Borneo's diverse habitats,
from mangroves along the coast to forest in the mountains.
WORLD WAR II MEMORIAL
---------------------
This beautifully landscaped memorial garden is the final resting place of 3,908 war heroes who either died in battle or captivity in Borneo during World War ll.
Most were Australian and British which some from the Punjab Signal Corp, New Zealand and a few locals.
The remains of the Allied troops were gathered from all over Borneo to be interned at the memorial garden.
Row upon row of white headstones mark the graves of the dead.
Many of the stones bear poignant messages from families while others are inscribed simple, 'known unto God'
LABUAN MARINE MUSEUM
--------------------
The Labuan Marine Museum consists of two levels of galleries.
The interior design of the gallery is inspired from the naval ship structure.
The lower level is divided into 4 sections which begin from the marine life exhibition showing various species of local fish in Labuan, information section showing facts of the 4 famous shipwrecks in Labuan water, coral and fish section and mangrove section showcased that features habitats found in mangrove in the form of a diorama.
LABUAN CLOCK TOWER
-----------
This clock tower is a resemblance and acts as a replica of the original clock built in 1906.
This tower is one of the monuments that were built in the period of WWII.
LABUAN BOTANICAL GARDEN
-----------------------
Labuan Botanical Garden is one of many famous attractions in Labuan Island.
This famous Botanical Gardens was previously the grounds of the Government House that is locally known as the 'Bumbung 12'.
THE CHIMNEY
-----------
Situated on a rise at Tanjung Kubong is the famous 'Chimney',
a 106 feet high red brick stack believed to be linked to the coal mining days of Labuan. The Chimney, 106 feet tall, was made from more than 23,000 pieces of red bricks imported from England. The bricks layering and works are typical of British style.
The 'Chimney' is still very much a mystery until today. Various hypotheses have been put forward to its purpose. Some said it was an unfinished mansion. While others said it was a light house beaconing passing ships. In its heyday, a thriving settlement was built at the sea front area below the Chimney. It was then used as a bell tower to announce the arrival of ships to the residents below. It has become an intriguing riddle that fascinates locals and visitors alike.
