Lacy's Caves | A Fantastic Circular Walk in Cumbria
Lacy's Caves | A Fantastic Circular Walk in Cumbria
Lacy's Caves are a series of 5 chambers in the red sandstone cliff of River Eden. Colonel Lacy, of Salkeld Hall, famous for once trying to blow up the stones of Long Meg Stone Circle, carved five chambers out of the sandstone cliffs by the River Eden in Little Salkeld.
It was fashionable to have romantic ruins at that time, or they may have been built as a wine store but it's still unknown. Colonel Lacy used to entertain guests here, and the area was planted with gardens. The rhododendrons and laburnams still flower every spring.
This was a fantastic circular walk starting at Long Meg Stone Circle. I highly recommend this walk it's a must for all ages. Check out my route.

60 Seconds @ Lacy's Caves (The Lake District, Cumbria)
60 second videos about places of interest in the Lake District, Eden Valley (Cumbria) and surrounding areas.
Lacy's Caves are a series of 5 chambers in the red sandstone cliff of the River Eden, just north of Little Salkeld.
Almost a 4 miles round trip walking from Little Salkeld, but well worth the the journey. On the way there is a stone map and abandoned mine, the Settle railway and of course the River Eden.
The caves are named after Lieutenant-Colonel Samuel Lacy of Salkeld Hall, who commissioned their carving in the 18th century
The reason for their creation is unknown, however they were used by Lacy for entertaining guests
60 Seconds @ brings you a series of 60 second videos around Cumbria. Showing off the best of the Lake Districts iconic places to visit. Mainly drone footage showing a different view to what you would see on ground level. Starting in February 2019 I will adding to the series constantly and revising many of these places to show the changing seasons. Subscribe to the Channel to keep up to date with the latest videos.

Long Meg and Her Daughters Stone Circle
Long Meg and Her Daughters Stone Circle
One of the finest stone circles in the north of England, the circle has a diameter of about 350 feet, the second biggest in the country. Long Meg is the tallest of the 69 stones, about 12 feet high, with three mysterious symbols, its four corners facing the points of the compass and standing some 60 feet outside the circle.
Local legend claims that Long Meg was a witch who with her daughters, was turned to stone for profaning the Sabbath, as they danced wildly on the moor. The circle is supposedly endowed with magic, so that it is impossible to count the same number of stones twice, but if you do then the magic is broken.
This was the start of a great walk i highly recommend for all that can get out and do it. I'll attach the route in the next upload as this video is to be continued...

Exploring Long Meg Stone Circle in Cumbria
Today, as part of my Cumbria exploration series, I have come with the lovely Julia and our host, Robert Croser, to look at the legendary Long Meg.
Long Meg and Her Daughters is a Bronze Age stone circle near Penrith in Cumbria, North West England. One of around 1,300 stone circles in the British Isles and Brittany, it was constructed as a part of a megalithic tradition that lasted from 3,300 to 900 BCE, during the Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Age. The stone circle is the sixth-largest example known from this part of north-western Europe, being slightly smaller than the rings at Stanton Drew in Somerset, the Ring of Brodgar in Orkney and Newgrange in County Meath.
