More information about the video content bellow:
1. The Republic of Karelia is a federal subject of Russia (a republic), located in the northwest of Russia.
2. Eastern Karelia has been a part of Russia since 1323. Western Karelia was obtained by Peter I (the Great) from Sweden by treaty in 1721, and the area was administratively reunited with the grand duchy of Finland in the 19th century when Russia obtained suzerainty over all Finland. Following the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the proclamation of Finnish independence, a 1920 peace treaty left eastern Karelia in Soviet hands and awarded western Karelia to Finland. Western Karelia was annexed by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics after the latter’s victory in the Russo-Finnish War (1939–40), however. After a 1947 peace treaty between the Soviets and Finland confirmed the annexation, almost the entire Finnish population of western Karelia moved into Finland.
3. As a part of the Fennoscandian Shield's ancient Karelian craton, most of the Republic of Karelia's surficial geology is Archaean or Paleoproterozoic, dated up to 3.4 billion years in the Vodlozero block. This area is the largest contiguous Archaean outcrop in Europe and one of the largest in the world.
4. According to the 2010 Census, ethnic Russians make up 82.2% of the republic's population, ethnic Karelians 7.4%. Other groups include Belarusians (3.8%), Ukrainians (2%), Finns (1.4%), Vepsians (0.5%), and a host of smaller groups, each accounting for less than 0.5% of the total population. Currently Russian is the only official language of the republic. Karelian, Veps, and Finnish are officially recognized languages of the republic since 2004, and their survival is promoted.
5. Petrozavodsk is the only city in Russia which was named after the emperor Peter I. The name of Petrozavodsk, the capital of the Karelian Republic, consists of two words, “Petro” (Peter) and “zavod” (rus. factory). This refers to the history of the first settlement which appeared in 1703 during the construction of a weapons factory which was decreed by Peter’s I, so the armory was soon named after him. Petrozavodskaya Sloboda, the settlement itself, was founded by another decree as a place of residence for all the factory workers. The weapons manufactured at this factory were used by soldiers during the Great Northern War (1700-1721) between the Tsardom of Russia and the Swedish Empire.
6. Karelian Ladoga is the largest lake in Europe. Ladozhskoye lake or Ladoga is a freshwater lake which is 136 miles in length and 86 miles wide. At least 40 rivers flow into Ladoga. It also drains into the Gulf of Finland via the Neva River. It is the largest lake in Europe and the 15th largest freshwater lake on the planet. Karelia has a huge number of lakes (about 18% of all waterbodies) on its territory. It outstrips countries like Finland, Sweden and Canada which only have 8 to 15%. There are more than 60,000 lakes in Karelia, and most of them are more than a hectare in size. The sum of their areas across the region is 145 kms3. That makes Karelia an absolute leader with the biggest coefficient of lakes in the world.
7. Several thousand petroglyphs, the cave paintings left by the ancient Sami people, can be found around Karelia today. The drawings on cave walls and ceilings, mostly of birds, wild animals, humans and boats, are 2,000 years older than the Egyptian pyramids and 4,000 years older than The Coliseum in Rome. The Sami are indigenous people of Scandinavia which today inhabit such countries as Norway, Finland, Sweden and Russia.

Sortavala and Ladoga lake
Ladoga lake with shheres and Sortavala city
The Island of Valaam. / Остров Валаам.
Valaam is the island in Republic of Karelia of Russia, located in the Northern part of the largest freshwater lakes in Europe - Ladoga, it is the largest island in the Valaam archipelago. On the island there is the village of Valaam, and the monument of Russian architecture - the Valaam monastery, founded before the baptism of Russia, in the year 960, the monk Sergius and Herman, the Greek Holy monks. Transfiguration monastery became the spiritual center of Ladoga lands. It is believed that in ancient times on the island, was located the main temple of Veles (or Volos) and Perun, who were the main deities for the Gentiles living close. The monastic tradition says that the Holy Apostle Andrew, enlightener of the Scythians and the Slavic peoples, moving along the route from the Varangians to the Greeks, blessed of cross the mountain on the island. In the 15th century the monastery was called the Great Lavra or the Northern Athos. Here was the center of world Orthodoxy and writing of books. By the early 16th century in the monastery lived 600 monks. Now in the monastery about two hundred inhabitants. Life revived in All saints, the Baptist, St. Nicholas, Svyatoostrovsky, Sergievsky sketes.
Period 1839-1917 is the heyday of the monastery. In 1989 on December 13, the day of memory of St. Andrew, when the island came six monks, the monastery began the process of revival. And 16 years later, in 2005, was first heard 1000-pound bell Andrew, mounted on the bell tower in the monastery in the framework of the restoration of an ancient belfry. The feast of the Nativity of the blessed virgin Mary September 21, 2008 Patriarch Alexy II consecrated the St. Vladimir skete on Valaam island and conducted the first divine Liturgy in the temple. Resurrection skete, located above Big Nikon Bay, on the mountain, was built in the early twentieth century in the place where according to tradition St. The Apostle Andrew erected a stone cross. Valaam island attracts every year thousands of tourists. The reason - the Valaam Islands have a unique nature, pine forests on the cliffs, warm and quiet inland lakes, the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Valaam monastery. During its formation, the monks brought the land, seeds and seedlings of plants from different parts of our country. For such a Northern location is not usual to see some trees and grass. The age of some of them is over three hundred years. The work of the Valaam monks are so fundamental that some areas are truly hand-made. Balaam - the natural reserve, a unique monument of Park art. There are more than 480 species of plants. The island was visited repeatedly by emperors Alexander I, Alexander II, and other members of the imperial family and also Tchaikovsky and Mendeleyev.
The present life of the monastery, another indication that faith invariably raises and restores the monastery from the ruins. So it was throughout the history of Valaam barbarous raids of the Swedes in ancient times, the bombing and the uncertain fate of the monastery during World War 2, it complete, it would seem that the devastation in the era of atheism – monastic life always has returned to these shores.

Russia: Republic of Karelia.
This was filmed between 3th and 6th May 2015. I had the pleasure of visiting Karelia.
The Republic of Karelia is one of the subjects of the Russian Federation. Karelia is located entirely in the northern part of Europe on the border with Finland. This is a special world of the northern edge of Russia with clear water, bright sky and silence, broken only by the sounds of nature. Also Karelia is considered to be the land of rivers and lakes - this area has about 60 thousand lakes and 27 thousand rivers. The largest of the lakes are Ladoga and Onega.
We’ve traveled over 2,500 km. During those days i've been shooting this film and I shot 10,000 images.

Kizhi Pogost (Russia) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Kizhi Pogost in Russia.
In the untouched landscape of Karelia in Russia is the island of Kizhi on Lake Onega. In 1951 an open air museum of Old Russian wooden architecture was built here. Since then many visitors have travelled to the island by boat between May and September as the other months are freezing with the winter cold. The main attraction looks like something out of a fairy-tale. Two huge wooden churches, one for summer, one for winter. The Transfiguration Of Our Lord Church is the larger one, built for the summer. The Maria Protection Church is the smaller, with heating and well equipped for winter. The gem of this space is the Iconastasis preserved in all of its colourful splendour and with the typical motifs of the Russian Orthodox church. The national chapel of Archangel Michael was brought here in 1961 from the village of Lelikozero. It looks like a rectangular log cabin and above the entrance is a small belfry with a pyramid-shaped hut and, at the rear, a double-tiered roof. There are many timber buildings within the world famous ensemble of Kizhi, that contains the largest wooden churches in Russia.

Karelia is one of the republics of Russia, it is located along the border with Finland and goes up to Barents sea. So far I've been lucky to explore only southern part, but someday I'll go all the way to the North as I'm in love with the nature I saw and definitely want to see more!
Karelia is the land of lakes, berries and pine trees. Most of the territory is untouched nature and so it is great for hiking, camping and fishing.
One of the jewels of southern Karelia is Ruskeala - amazingly beautiful canyon with emerald waters. This place is rich with marble and once this was discovered, local marble was used for decoration of palaces and subway stations in St Petersburg.
Currently it is a tourist attaction, with zip trolleys for extreme fun, boats for rent and some excursions. I took a boat ride and explored marble caves as well.
Later I moved to Ladoga lake and had a nice evening on the shore that later turned into breathetaking purple sunset.
