Episode 3 Bundaberg to Lady Musgrave Island
Sailing to Lady Musgrave Island had been on the bucket list for quite some time. Weather was still cold and windy though.
After an exciting crossing from Bundaberg, we caught a fish on the way over! First catch of the season on our new handline.
It was everything I expected and more on and around Lady Musgrave. We finally got some good weather and enjoyed a few days snorkelling, even swam with a turtle!
The island itself was great to visit too with an abundance of bird life, coral beaches and dense green trees throughout the island.

Lady Musgrave Experience
Snorkelling with turtles on Lady Musgrave Island was an excellent experience.
Local diving - Bundaberg
Just an easy dive at a local spot along the coast near Bundaberg. Nothing exciting on this dive, more that you had to be there. I will have to work out how to steady and aim the Go-Pro better.
Lady Musgrave Dreaming
I set off from the coastal township of Seventeen Seventy on my Jet-ski to Lady Musgrave Island which lies approximately 58km ENE and is the second most southern island in the Barrier Reef group. What follows is my account of the three days I spent in this pristine paradise.
All footage filmed with the Sony HDR-AS100V action camera.
Lady Musgrove Island
Lady Musgrave Reef
Lady Musgrave Island is located 96 kilometres north-east of Bundaberg, 59 kilometres east of the Town of 1770.
It is the second most southerly cay of the Great Barrier Reef in the Capricornia Cays National Park. The size of the island is estimated at 19.47 hectares.
Lady Musgrave Reef, which surrounds the island, is approximately 2930 hectares. It includes a large lagoon, which is an attraction for visitors and other users because the bommies and margins of the lagoon support diverse coral cover. Recreational users and tourist operators access Lady Musgrave Reef and Island to snorkel, dive, fish, and camp. The commercial fishing industry also uses the site as an anchorage.
The island supports a major breeding population of vulnerable green turtles and a minor breeding population of endangered loggerhead turtles. It is also a significant breeding site and important roosting and feeding site for several species of coastal birds.
There are an enormous number of birds on the island. White-capped noddy terns nest in abundance in the Pisonia trees whilst bridled terns, black-naped terns and silver gulls nest on the ground in more open areas nearer the beach. The carcasses of noddy tern chicks that fall out of nests or adults that become tangled in the sticky Pisonia seeds are quickly devoured by centipedes and the nutrients eventually returned to the soil.

Walking through Lady Musgrave Island
Quick, shaky video from Lady Musgrave Island in the southern Great Barrier Reef, Australia. It's a tiny island with no facilities, but it was an awesome place to drop the anchor. The trees were full of loud birds and it was a bit freaky walking through them. It felt like the beginning of a horror movie.
