Sremski Karlovci in Serbia
Not only Sremski Karlovci was the centre of art, politics, religion and culture but nowadays its youth is trying to make it centre of ecology in Vojvodina. I met Sara who is from this little town, she kindly showed me around from the main square up to the Peace Chapel passing by the town's own Eco-Center where she is actively involved.

Sremski Karlovci, located in the foot of the only mountain in Vojvodina, the Fruska Gora, are remembered for the good wine, architecture or cultural monuments, but also for the interesting stories from the rich history of the Serbian people.
Sremski Karlovci represents one of the oldest places in Vojvodina, as remnants of Neolithic settlements were discovered there. The oldest written records of this town, situated in the immediate vicinity of Novi Sad, date back to 1308. The first mention of the name Sremski Karlovci appears in the mid 16th century, but only at the end of the next century did the town begin to prosper and later became the residence of the Karlovac Metropolitan. Sremski Karlovci remained for a long time the residence of the Serbian Patriarch. Several important churches and church buildings, seven of them, have survived. The oldest, so-called Lower Church was built in 1712. In the churchyard there is still an old plane tree planted at the same time when the foundations of the church were laid and believed to be the oldest of its kind in Europe. As to original edifices, the oldest are the Upper Church and the Orthodox Cathedral. The iconostasis in the latter is one of the most significant Baroque works in Serbian sacral painting, while wood carvings are in the early Rococo style. The Cathedral was restored in 19th century, when it was enriched with 11 Biblical and historical compositions by famous Serbian painter Paja Jovanovic.
Sremski Karlovci is also interesting because every house in the center of the town has its own story. Either someone important was born or lived in it, or it was the center of an important national institution. The oldest and most beautiful buildings have been preserved on the square, which bears the name of the poet Branko Radicevic who immortalized this town with his beautiful Romantic verse. We should mention that the first Serbian grammar school was established here in 1771, and two decades later the first Serbian academy of theology.
Three centuries ago peace negotiations were completed in the town between the Christian Alliance and Turkey, making this town part of European history. Namely, at the time Austria, Poland, Venice and Russia on one side and Turkey on the other negotiated as warring sides, while England and Holland acted as intermediaries. A few curious details are connected with this event. Thus for example the building where the negotiations were held had four entrances so all participants could enter at the same time. For the same reason, for the first time in diplomatic history, a round table was officially used. At the place where the Peace of Karlovac was signed, a few years later, the Chapel of Our Lady of Peace was erected.
Sremski Karlovci belongs to a fertile winegrowing region of Vojvodina. The vine plant was first brought from Sicily by the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius Probus in 273 AD. Since then the growing of vines has become an important economic potential of this town. Especially numerous were the types of red grapes from which the famous ausbruch and bermet wine served even at the court in Vienna, and sold at stock markets in Rotterdam and London as an exclusive beverage. The dedication of the local population to vineyards and wine has been lasting for centuries, and today almost every household makes their own wine from their own vineyards, and as often pointed out for the visitors of the town, it should be tasted.

Exploring MONASTERIES and THE HOLY MOUNTAIN Fruska Gora | vojvodina, serbia | ENJOY WATCH
Fruska Gora, the mountain in Vojvodina, close to Novi Sad, in the northern part of Serbia, is home for 18 monasteries. It is called „The holy mountain“. Over 35 Orthodox monasteries were built on Fruška Gora, of which 17 survived. Most of the monasteries were built from the 15th to 18th century. In this video, I explore Fruska Gora and its beautiful monasteries. Enjoy in their tranquility, peace, and beauty.
First stop is Hopovo monastery. It is believed to be the first monastery founded by Đurađ Branković at the beginning of the 16th century, and to have included a church dedicated to Saint Nikola at the time. A sign above the entrance to the church led to the confusion about the church's origins, stating that it was built in 1576, but it was later established that this was the date the current church was built in place of the old one. Due to its architecture and rich cultural and religious history, Novo Hopovo Monastery is considered one of Serbia's most significant monasteries. The Monastery was a scholastic center for many centuries, and literacy was taught to Serbs coming from as far as Belgrade. The famous writer and philosopher Dositej Obradović took his vows here and served as a monk for three years.
Krusedol monastery was founded by the Branković family, the last despots of Srem. The temple is dedicated to the Annunciation.
Velika Remeta monastery was first mentioned in official historical scriptures in the sixteenth century. The men's monastery is devoted to St. Dimitrije and is completely surrounded by dormitories.
Beočin monastery is a women's monastery dedicated to the Ascension of Christ and is located near the Beočin village, on the northern side of Fruška Gora, between two hills overgrown with thick forest. The exact time when it was built is unknown, but there are scripts that mention it in the 16th century.
Šišatovac monastery is located in the Šišatovac area, on the southern slopes of the western Fruška Gora. Probably the most well-known period for this place was around the year of 1812 when Sisatovac monastery was a home of archimandrite Lukijan Musicki, who managed to make this monastery a gathering place of the most important intellectual elite of that time: Vuk Karadzic, Jakov Gercic, Petar Ivanovic Kepen, and many others.
In the monastery, Nikola Tesla treated cholera in his youth and recovered from healing water. When he got up from the hospital bed, he saw a bright white pigeon that followed him for the rest of his life. How important the healing of Nikola Tesla was, today knows the whole of humanity. Under the motto Where are Tesla's people, there is Tesla's Smiljan, Tesla's scientific foundation from Philadelphia has initiated the idea to build a replica of Tesla's birth house, a church from Smiljan, and Tesla tower within the Sisatovac monastery.
Fruska Gora was an island in the Pannonian sea before 90 million years. It is long 75 kilometers, wide 15 kilometers with the highest peak of 539 meters. In the time of the Roman The mountain's name originates in the old Serbian word Fruzi of which singular form is Frug; and its adjective is Fruški, which was used for naming the Frankish people Empire, its name was Alma Mons, meaning the fertile mount. The mountain's name originates in the old Serbian word Fruzi of which singular form is Frug; and its adjective is Fruški, which was used for naming the Frankish people. Fruška Gora was declared a national park in 1960.

SUMMARY

Serbia (Serbian: Србија / Srbija [sř̩bija]), officially the Republic of Serbia (Serbian: Република Србија / Republika Srbija [repǔblika sř̩bija]), is a country situated at the crossroads of Central and Southeast Europe in the southern Pannonian Plain and the central Balkans. The sovereign state borders Hungary to the north; Romania and Bulgaria to the east; Macedonia to the south; Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro to the west. The country claims a border with Albania through the disputed territory of Kosovo. Serbia numbers around 7 million residents. Its capital, Belgrade, ranks among the oldest and largest cities in southeastern Europe.Following the Slavic migrations to the Balkans postdating the 6th century, Serbs established several sovereign states in the early Middle Ages which at times nominally recognized Byzantine, Frankish and Hungarian overrule. The Serbian Kingdom obtained recognition by the Vatican and Constantinople in 1217, reaching its peak in 1346 as a relatively short-lived Serbian Empire. By the mid-16th century, the entire modern-day Serbia was annexed by the Ottomans, at times interrupted by the Habsburg Empire, which started expanding towards Central Serbia from the end of the 17th century, while maintaining a foothold in modern-day Vojvodina. In the early 19th century, the Serbian Revolution established the nation-state as the region's first constitutional monarchy, which subsequently expanded its territory. Following disastrous casualties in World War I, and the subsequent unification of the former Habsburg crownland of Vojvodina (and other territories) with Serbia, the country co-founded Yugoslavia with other South Slavic peoples, which would exist in various political formations until the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s. During the breakup of Yugoslavia, the country declared independence in April 1992 as Serbia formed a union with Montenegro, which was peacefully dissolved in 2006. In 2008, the parliament of the province of Kosovo unilaterally declared independence, with mixed responses from the international community.
Serbia is a member of the UN, CoE, OSCE, PfP, BSEC, CEFTA and it is acceding to the WTO. Since 2014 the country has been negotiating its EU accession with perspective of joining the European Union by 2025 and is the only country in the current enlargement agenda which is designated as free by Freedom House. Since 2007, Serbia formally adheres to the policy of military neutrality. An upper-middle income economy with a dominant service sector followed by the industrial sector and agriculture, the country ranks high by the Human Development Index (66th), Social Progress Index (45th) as well as the Global Peace Index (54th).
