Calls for Removal of Derelict Vessels in Ladysmith
LADYSMITH - They're unmanned and unwanted boats left to rot in Ladysmith. The number of derelict vessels in the water between Ladysmith's Transfer Beach and Maritime Society's Community Marina is growing. Barry Patchett moores his boat at the Marina, right next to the derelict boats. Its been an eye sore for a long time, says Barry. He wants them gone.
People have been disposing of their unwanted boats in the bay. Some are tied to the concrete pillars while some drift. The members of the marina say they have become safety hazards. Ladysmith doesn't have a harbour commission, so there is no one to enforce regulations. Boats sink because they are not maintained properly. They pollute the area because they dump sewage in the water contaminating the water, says Bryan Saunders who moores alongside Barry.
Locals have nicknamed the cluster of vessels 'the dogpatch'. Not all of them have been abandoned. Some have owners who live on board. They have dropped anchor and save on moorage fees. They are squatters on the water who come and go as they please.
It would cost close to $10,000 to move each boat. Money no one is willing to pay. Barry wants someone to take ownership of the boats and get them out of there, Somebody should take jurisdiction over it. I think it would have to be someone provincial or federal and delegate it possibly to the municipal government but at the moment everyone's hands seem to be tied.
Ladysmith's mayor wasn't available to comment on the growing marine tomb today. The town is not legally responsible for the removal but locals say, someone needs to step up to the helm. They want someone to force the drifters out of the water.

Coal Wharf Ladysmith Part Four
This slide show is the final version of building the Coal Wharf diorama for the Ladysmith Maritime Society. The project took two years by some very dedicated model railroaders, carpenters, and Museum staff. The entire diorama except for the locomotives was built from scratch. The tug boat is a modified resin kit. The water was made from about 15 coats of gloss Mod Podge then topped with several coats of acrylic varnish. The seabed was painted with acrylic artists colors prior to the other applications. Many thanks to Shirley Blackstaff, Glenna Ewing, Dave Ames, Victor Gerwin, Jim Irvine, Bill Hook, Robert Hartl, Ken Black, Vies Salanski, and Colin MacLock for making Guy Brooke's vision become reality.
