Kayaking Laguna Grande Bio Bay in Fajardo, Puerto Rico during the new moon (complete darkness) July 2018
Bio bay refers to the bioluminescence single cell marine plankton known as dinoflagellates that literally glow when agitated. These tiny creatures emit a greenish blue sparkle in the water when agitated (or moved) by anything it comes into contact with. I filmed our kayaking adventure in Fajardo to the Laguna Grande bio bay on the new moon (complete darkness) to see how bright the glow is.
There are only five bioluminescent bays in the world. Join me for a kayaking tour of Laguna Grande bio bay located in Fajardo on the Northeast corner of Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico Laguna Grande Bio Bay Kayak Excursion - Early Evening Trip (1)
My first kayak experience in my life at Fajardo, Puerto Rico. These are realistic video footage taken by my SJCAM 5000+ during my kayak, mostly at Laguna Grande at the BioBay. At the end, you can see it is pretty much all dark, which is quite an experience kayaking. I took the tour with Kayaking Puerto Rico, a great company!
The launch site is at Las Croabas, Fajardo. It is an early evening tour starting at 6pm in June. Unfortunately my camera is not able to capture the famous Bioluminescent effect from Pyrodinium Bahamense in the dark. But it gives you a realistic sense of the tour.

THE GLOWING BIO BAY IN VIEQUES PUERTO RICO
Mosquito Bay or Bio Bay in Vieques, Puerto Rico is an amazing place. It is the brightest glowing bioluminescent bay in the world. I jumped on a few kayak tours during the night of a new moon and saw this incredible light show.
Honestly, it was more amazing that I imagined. I had read a review or two, but wasn't sure if it was worth the trip to the island. It was. The bay is extremely bright, and until now, it was very hard to capture on camera. I recently picked up a Sony a7s which is a beast in low light, and was impressed with that it could capture. This has rarely ever been caught on Camera.
The government is doing a good job at keeping this place pristine. In some areas of the world you can jump in, splash around, use gasoline engines, and generally just destroy the ecosystem these little guys live in. Here in Vieques, Puerto Rico, you are not allowed to swim, or use gasoline. Nearby light pollution has to be kept to a minimum, and there give Bio Bay some days off now and again to recover. This is probably why it remains the brightest in the world. High Five for sustainable eco tourism. I wish everywhere was this forward thinking.
This was one of my best travel experiences. Like I said, it's worth the trip!

“La Laguna Grande IN FAJARDO
La Laguna Grande in Fajardo
A bio bay is a body of water that contains millions of micro-organisms, called “dinoflagellates,” that glow in the dark for a second when agitated.
There are three bioluminescent bays (bio-bays) in Puerto Rico. One in the SouthWest – La Parguera, one on Vieques – Mosquito Bay, and the one in Fajardo – La Laguna Grande. Out of all three, Mosquito Bay is the brightest, and La Parguera is the least bright.
On our trip, we went to La Laguna Grande in Fajardo. As the name suggests, this bio-bay is a large lagoon that you have to kayak to via a mile long canal. The best part of the trip is the kayak adventure under the stars.
There are many kayak operators that guide tours into the bio-bay. They all meet at Las Croabas, which is a small bay with a public boat dock as well as a few restaurants. We used Glass Bottom tours that featured glass bottom kayak’s. The guides Manolo and Bradley were great and made the experience fun. Bradley was full of facts and Manolo was the comic relief.
We were staying in San Juan, and instead of paying for the overpriced hotel tour we rented a car for 24 hours ($52) and drove ourselves. The highways are safe and in great condition, so no problem getting to Fajardo. Plus, having a car will allow you to do some exploring on your own like the Luquillo Kiosks. Picture a strip mall of open-air restaurants with parking up front and beach out the back.
Make sure you get to Las Croabas no later than 5, and I recommend you get there by 4 if possible. Book your tour then grab a bite to eat at one of the nearby restaurants. Bring bug spray because you will need it! The mosquitoes are bad. Also, wear a swimsuit and bring a change of clothes because you will get wet.
