Lahaina Banyan Court Park est un parc public situé entre la rue Front Street et le port de Lahaina.
Autrefois le site de l'ancien fort de Lahaina, il abrite entre autres aujourd'hui l'ancien palais de justice, une partie de l'ancien fort ainsi qu'un gigantesque arbre, un banian.
Cet arbre est l'un des plus grands banians des États-Unis et il est l'une des principales attractions de Lahaina.
Il a été planté en avril 1873 pour commémorer le 50e anniversaire des missionnaires protestants à Lahaina. Lorsqu'il a été planté, il avait une hauteur de 2,4 mètres. Aujourd'hui, il mesure plus de 18 mètres de haut.
Cet arbre a développé une multitude de troncs et de racines, formant à lui seul un parc verdoyant dans lequel il est vraiment agréable de se promener pour admirer ses immenses tentacules ou tout simplement se reposer sous son imposant feuillage.
Quant à l'ancien palais de justice, il abrite aujourd'hui un musée, des galeries d'art, un centre d'accueil ainsi qu'une salle de réunion communautaire.

The Lahaina Banyan Court Park is a public park located at the corner of Front Street and Canal Street in the town of Lahaina, Hawaii, which was the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii from 1820 to 1845. The 1.94 acres (0.79 ha) park, also known as Lahaina Courthouse Square and commonly called Banyan Tree Park, contains multiple heritage sites on the Lahaina Historic Trail, and a self-guided walking tour through the Lahaina Historic Districts.[1]
The park occupies the site of the Old Lahaina Fort, originally built in 1831. Hoapili, the Royal Governor of Maui, built the fort to protect the town from riotous sailors when Lahaina was used as an anchorage for the North Pacific whaling fleet.[2] After the fort was demolished in 1854, a courthouse was built on the site. A portion of the old Lahaina Fort was reconstructed in 1964. The old Lahaina Courthouse was recognized as a contributing property of the Lahaina Historic District in 1965, and is currently used by the Lahaina Arts Council and the Lahaina Historic Society.
Sheriff William Owen Smith planted an Indian banyan tree in the courtyard square in 1873 to memorialize the 50th anniversary of the first American Protestant mission in Lahaina. The banyan tree has become the largest banyan tree in Hawaii, and one of the largest banyan trees in the United States. Its extensive trunk and aerial root system now covers 0.66 acres (0.27 ha). The park is managed by the County of Maui and the Lahaina Restoration Foundation.

The Maui banyan tree park is commonly known in Hawaiian as paniana. You can find the tree park located in the Courthouse Square, which was renamed Lahaina Banyan Tree Court Park. The park itself is approximately 1.94 acres. It is the Hawaii's biggest as well as the largest in all of the United States.
The Lahaina banyan tree was a gift from missionaries from India. Believe it or not, the tree was only 8 feet (2.4 m) when originally planted.
Today it stands at about 60 feet (18 m) and has rooted into 16 major trunks (not including the main trunk) with a giant canopy that covers an area of about 0.66 acres (0.27 ha).

You'll notice that when the sun sets there is a lot of noise as the birds fly back into the banyan tree to find their favourite branch to rest on.
What is also interesting is that there used to be a canal of water down one side of the tree. The canal has been turned into a street but many believe it is still a source of water for the banyan roots.
Aerial roots help support the tree's massive limbs that you'll notice. What the people did to help the aerial roots to reach the ground faster is that they filled mayonnaise jars with water and hung them on the ends of the roots closest to the ground.
The Lahaina banyan tree roots wanted the water and many believe that the tree seemed to increase the speed of growth.
Many people look as this large banyan tree in Maui and think it is many trees joined together with limbs that have grown together - no, it's one tree.
