March2017 First time in Hawaii (Aloha State) with Family&friends who become my family^_^
Traveling with 15party, for MARCH CELEBRANTS:Auntie Beth’s bday, my parents Anniversary, Baby Eli’s advance bday and my 3rd yr here in US. I have free pass to attractions nearby: Maui Value Pass for entry to Maui Ocean Center, Maui Tropical Plantation, Bailey House Museum and Atlantis Maui Submarine Adventure (which really help explore the island if we’re not busy beach hopping). We are staying in bed and breakfast which turns out to be a Lahaina historic Villa (but have state of the art automatic bidet :p).

The final stop on this magical 89 day cruise with Holland America. Maui is the name and Lahaina is the game. Join me as I stroll down Front Street and take in the sights. I eat at Down the Hatch (as seen on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives). Find a massive Banyan tree. Find a shaved ice mixed with alcohol. Maui is simply a beautiful small paradise.

Carthaginian II shipwreck- Lahaina, Maui, HI

The Carthaginian II shipwreck was installed a half-mile from Lahaina, Maui in 2005 at a depth of about 95 feet (with its mast located at 60 feet). {The masts were knocked off by a tsunami in 2012- ed.} It was a replica of a whaling supply vessel that served as a floating museum in Lahaina Harbor. While the dive site is located offshore, the site is only accessible by boat. Divers must remain in the footprint of the shipwreck and cannot ascend or descend when the Atlantis Submarine is in the vicinity, to avoid problems.
{ ED.- I dove this wreck on 4/5/2014 with Maui Dreams Dive Shop. There was about a 1.5Kt current that made it a difficult dive and maximized air consumption. My total bottom time was only about 20 mins due to the effort required to kick against the current to stay near the wreck while the Atlantis circled us. It is a nice dive but I would say only divers with Nitrox, deep diving and experience in diving in currents should attempt this dive}

It is almost whale watching season. Finally got the chance to see the wonderful gentle giants of the sea. Had a chane to see some dolphins too. A must see attraction in Maui Lahaina Hawaii. There are three parts of whale watching, first is the whale searching, second is the whale waiting and finally the whale watching. Thank you Star Princess Cruises for another shore excursion.

Lāhainā is the largest town and census-designated place (CDP) in West Maui, Maui County, Hawaiʻi, United States, and the gateway to the famous Kaʻanapali and Kapalua beach resorts north of town. As of the 2000 Census, the CDP had a resident population of 9,118. Lāhainā encompasses the coastal along State Highway 30 from tunnel at the south, through Olawalu up the CDP of Nāpili-Honokōwai is to the north. During the heavy tourist seasons, the population can swell to nearly 40,000 people. Before Hawaiʻi's annexation by the United States, Lāhainā was the Royal Capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom as city signs proclaim. The name means cruel sun in the Hawaiian language, describing droughts that affect the area. In the 1800s, Lāhainā was the center of the global whaling industry with many sailing ships anchored in front of town; today a score of pleasure craft make their home there.

Recent scuba diving video from Hawaii. Two Maui shore dives (Olowalu and Makena Landing). Boat dives locations - Lanai (1st Cathedral, 2nd Cathedral, Fish Rock), Molokini crater. I used GoPro 3 Black Edition with and without red filter plus Sola 500 video light. All in HD.
I had 6 (time limited) boat dives (not so cool for the price) and 2 shore dives (very cool) I was diving with two different companies. Boat dives with Lahaina Divers. Amazingly most of my video made on shore dives thanks to Mike from Maui Diving Scuba Center. Best on the island if you looking for enthusiastic and knowledgeable dive instructor. Super cool time underwater.

One of the attractions on Maui is the Atlantis IX Submarine Dive. It dives to the sea bed at about one hundred feet to explore the coral bed and fish who live there. The submarine cost about 4.5 million to build.

So Samantha was told that Lahaina was not worth the trip to visit while on the island of Maui. Bah! Humbug I scolded her, this is a historic whaling town from the 1800's that was a major part of start of commerce in Hawaii and written about by James Michener in his novel Hawaii. As luck would have it, a retired ladys group was selling fresh picked lei's that day for a charity. They meet 2 Thursdays a month, so just my luck getting off the hook and getting Sam a lei which she wanted. I had refused to get one from the hacks at the airport.

Lāhainā is the largest census-designated place in West Maui, Maui County, Hawaii, United States, and includes the Ka'anapali and Kapalua beach resorts. As of the 2010 census, the CDP had a resident population of 11,704. Lahaina encompasses the coast along Hawaii Route 30 from a tunnel at the south end, through Olowalu, and to the CDP of Napili-Honokowai to the north. During the tourist season, the population can swell to nearly 40,000 people.
There are many different climates in the different districts of Lahaina. The historic district is the driest and calmest and hosts the small boat harbor. Kaanapali is north of a wind line and has double the annual rainfall and frequent breezes. The Kapalua and Napili areas have almost four times the annual rainfall compared to the historic district of Lahaina. The historic district has preserved 60 historic sites within a small area and they are managed by the Lahaina Restoration.
Lahaina was the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii from 1820 to 1845, when the capital was moved back to Honolulu. In the 19th century, Lahaina was the center of the global whaling industry, with many sailing ships anchoring at its waterfront; today pleasure craft make their home there. Lahaina's Front Street has been ranked one of the Top Ten Greatest Streets by the American Planning Association. Lahaina's popularity as a tropical getaway has made its real estate some of the most expensive in Hawaii; many luxury homes and condos are sold for more than $2 million there.
600 block of Front Street is home to the largest Banyan Tree in the United States. There was a ceremony when the tree was planted in 1873 and the history is displayed on a plaque under the tree. The huge West Maui mountains have beautiful valleys visible from the historic district of Lahaina. The valleys are the backdrop for the 5 o'clock rainbow that happens almost every day. In 1831 a fort was built for defense, and the reconstructed remains of its 20-foot (6.1 m) walls and original cannons can still be seen. Also near the small boat harbor are the historic Pioneer Inn and the Baldwin House museum in the historic district of Lahaina.
Hale Paʻi is the site of Hawaii's first printing press, including Hawaii's first paper currency, printed in 1843. The Plantation Course at Kapalua hosts the PGA Tour's Hyundai Tournament of Champions every January. The many restaurants along Front Street offer a broad variety of food and entertainment, making it the hub of West Maui's night life. A variety of shops and galleries line both sides of the oceanfront Front street.
Carthaginian II was a museum ship moored in the harbor of this former whaling port. Built in 1920 and brought to Maui in 1973, it served as a whaling museum until 2005, and after being sunk in 95 feet (29 m) of water about 1⁄2-mile (0.80 km) offshore to create an artificial reef, now serves as a diving destination. It replaced an earlier replica of a whaler, Carthaginian, which had been converted in 1966 to film scenes for the 1966 movie Hawaii. Halloween is a major celebration in Lahaina and has become a signature event in the past decades, with crowds averaging between 20,000 and 30,000.
