Life in Lahaul - Spiti Valley | Himachal Pradesh | Incredible India 2017
The district of Lahaul-Spiti in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh consists of the two formerly separate districts of Lahaul and Spiti. The present administrative centre is Keylong in Lahaul. Before the two districts were merged, Kardang was the capital of Lahaul, and Dhankar the capital of Spiti. The district was formed in 1960.
Kunzum la or the Kunzum Pass (altitude 4,551 m; 14,931 ft) is the entrance pass to the Spiti Valley from Lahaul. It is 21 km from Chandra Tal.[1] This district is connected to Manali through the Rohtang Pass. To the south, Spiti ends 24 km from Tabo, at the Sumdo where the road enters Kinnaur and joins with National Highway No. 22.[2]
The two valleys are quite different in character. Spiti is more barren and difficult to cross, with an average elevation of the valley floor of 4,270 m (14,009 ft). It is enclosed between lofty ranges, with the Spiti river rushing out of a gorge in the southeast to meet the Sutlej River. It is a typical mountain desert area with an average annual rainfall of only 170 mm (6.7 inches)
The natural scenery and Buddhist monasteries, such as Kye, Dhankar, Shashur, Guru Ghantal, Khungri Monastery in Pin Valley, Tnagyud Gompa of the Sakya Sect in Komic, Sherkhang Gompa in Lahlung (believed to be older than Tabo Monastery), the only Buddhist Mummy of a Monk in Gue around 550 years old and Chandra Taal Lake are the main tourist attractions of the region.
One of the most interesting places is the Tabo Monastery, located 45 km from Kaza, Himachal Pradesh, the capital of the Spiti region. This monastery rose to prominence when it celebrated its thousandth year of existence in 1996. It houses a collection of Buddhist scriptures, Buddhist statues and Thangkas. The ancient gompa is finished with mud plaster, and contains several scriptures and documents. Lama Dzangpo heads the gompa here. There is a modern guest house with a dining hall and all facilities are available.
Another famous gompa, Kardang Monastery, is located at an elevation of 3,500 metres across the river, about 8 km from Keylong. Kardang is well connected by the road via the Tandi bridge which is about 14 km from Keylong. Built in the 12th century, this monastery houses a large library of Buddhist literature including the main Kangyur and Tangyur scriptures.
The treacherous weather in Lahaul and Spiti permits visitors to tour only between the months of June to October, when the roads and villages are free of snow and the high passes (Rothang La and Kunzum La) are open. It is possible to access Spiti from Kinnaur (along the Sutlej) all through the year, although the road is sometimes temporarily closed by landslides or avalanches.
Buddhist Monasteries in Spiti: Spiti is one of the important centers of Buddhism in Himachal Pradesh. It is popularly known as the 'land of lamas'. The valley is dotted by numerous Buddhist Monasteries or Gompas that are famous throughout the world and are a favorite of Dalai Lama.
Kye Monastery: Kye Monastery is one of the main learning centres of Buddhist studies in Spiti. The monastery is house to some 100 odd monks who receive education here. It is oldest and biggest monastery in Spiti. It houses the rare painting and beautiful scriptures of Buddha and other gods and goddess. You may also find rare 'Thangka' paintings and ancient musical instruments 'trumpets, cymbals, and drums in the monastery.
Tabo Monastery: Perched at an amazing altitude of 3050 meters, Tabo Monastery is often referred to as the 'Ajanta of the Himalayas'. The 10th century Tabo Monastery was founded by the great scholar, Richen Zangpo, and has been declared as the World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The monastery houses more than 60 lamas and contains the rare collection of scriptures, pieces of art, wall paintings -Thankas and Stucco.
Flora and Fauna of Spiti Valley: The valley is blessed with the good population of snow leopards, ibex, Himalayan Brown Bear, Musk Deer, Himalayan Blue Sheep etc. which serves as the boon for the wildlife lovers. There are two important protected areas in the region that are a home to snow leopard and its prey including the Pin Valley National Park and Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary. Surprisingly, due to ardent religious beliefs, people of Spiti do not hunt these wild animals.

Lahaul Spiti Valley (Life in Winter) #Lahaul #Spiti
Snowfall is considered a boon for the tourism, agriculture and horticulture industry in Himachal, but it brought misery to the residents of tribal district of Lahaul and Spiti.
Untimely snow gave a big blow to the economy of people in the region as major cash crops got damaged in the fields. The first spell of heavy snowfall was reported in September last year. The apple crop was ready for harvesting, but untimely heavy snowfall caused 90 per cent damage to the crop.

Not only apples, broccoli, cauliflower, iceberg lettuce and potatoes, which is the only source of livelihood to the people of this tribal district, perished in snow.
Farmers of the district said they had never experienced such a loss to apple trees, vegetable and potato crops in the past. There was no trace of potatoes, peas and vegetable crops in the fields, which got buried under 3 or 4-feet of snow, even as harvesting was to start in the end of September.
Farmers’ hope for a good harvest was dashed to the ground last year because of sudden, untimely heavy snowfall. The Chandra valley recorded 3-feet snow, while Koksar recorded over 5-feet snow in September 2018. The potato and apple crop was to be harvested in September end and October, while seasonal vegetable crops were to be harvested in the lower valley.

The district of Lahaul-Spiti in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh consists of the two formerly separate districts of Lahaul and Spiti. The present administrative centre is Keylong in Lahaul. Before the two districts were merged, Kardang was the capital of Lahaul, and Dhankar the capital of Spiti. places to visit in Lahaul-Spiti have a unique terrain that is exciting and adventurous. Mountain ranges here are bare, bereft of any vegetation. As you drive up and down the Trans-Himalayan range, you see the region’s stunning landscape. Snow is a common feature here and some peaks never let it go, no matter what season it is. Tourist places in Lahaul-Spiti are known for their enchanting character, as they are extreme and mostly rare from every other place in India.

A farmer of Lahaul valley speaks about potatoes
The district of Lahaul-Spiti in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh.
A farmer of Lahaul speaks about potato farming in Lahaul, he says, The potato we get from the whole Lahoul Valley and we get around two to two and a half lacs sacks of potatoes. Seed potatoes are disease free and it grows to the height of seven thousand feets potatoes and the normal potatoes mostly have the diseases. We measure the weight of the sacks here and sends it to Kiratpur by trucks. Roads are very important for us. After the construction of this road, we started trading potatoes from here and also we send the potatoes to different areas of the country like Delhi and Punjab.

Drive to Keylong : Awesome Valley in Lahaul and Spiti | Leh - Manali Highway | Day 3 #Himachal
Licence:
You’re free to use this song in any of your videos, but you must include the following in your video description (copy & paste)
Jarico & Vlad Gluschenko - Weekend (Vlog No Copyright Music)
Kyelang (or Keylong) is the administrative centre of the Lahaul and Spiti district in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, 126 km (78 mi) north of Manali and 120 km (75 mi) from the Indo-Tibetan border. It is located along the Manali-Leh Highway, about 7 km (4.3 mi) north-east of intersection of the Chandra Valley, the Bhaga Valley, and the Chenab Valley; on the banks of Bhaga River.
Sights and festivals
Kyelang faces the famous Kardang Monastery, the largest and most important monastery in Lahaul, of the Drukpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism, which is on a slope across the river from Keylong.
Sights near Kyelang include the Kardang, Shasur, and Tayul monasteries, all within a few kilometres of Kyelang. There is also a small temple dedicated to the local deity Kelang Wazir in the house of Shri Nawang Dorje that may be visited upon arrangement.
The annual Lahaul Festival is held here each July with a big, busy market and a number of cultural activities.
Tourism
Kyelang is the district headquarters of Lahaul and Spiti district and is home to most of the government offices and facilities in Lahaul. It hosts a regular bazaar.
There are some tourist facilities including a Circuit House, a Public Works Department (PWD) Rest House, a Sainik (Army) Rest House, a Tourist Bungalow, and a number of small hotels.
Access
Kyelang is accessed from Manali by Manali-Leh Highway, a part of NH21. It is located about 125 km (78 mi) north of Manali. It is located at an altitude of 3,080 m (10,100 ft), and is cut off from the outside world from October-end to mid-May due to heavy snowfall at Rohtang pass that closes the pass during the winter.
The peak travel season is during May and June when a lot of tourists visit Rohtang pass. There are enough buses in summer season from Manali. The time taken is 4 to 10 hours depending upon the condition of the road (that sometimes becomes too slippery because of snowfall) and traffic jams that occur at Rohtang pass and Beas nullah near Marhi. It is advisable to cross Rohtang pass before 8 am.
After crossing Rohtang pass 51 km (32 mi) away, one has to descend almost the same distance that one had to ascend from Manali. After crossing Rohtang, the first village is Gramphu at 25 km (16 mi) where one has to turn left to go to Sissu 25 km (16 mi) away, then continue to Tandi 8 km (5.0 mi) away, and then right to reach Keylong.
Rohtang tunnel
Due to the military significance of Leh-Manali highway and the need to keep it open the entire year, the Indian government began building the $320 million 8.5 km (5.3 mi) long horseshoe shaped Rohtang Tunnel project in 2010 to bypass Rohtang pass to create a much safer and faster year-round link to Kyelang.[3] The tunnel will also shorten the distance by about 50 km (31 mi) and reduce the travel time between the southern and northern faces of Rohtang pass by five hours.[4] While it now takes 4 to 6 hours to ascend, negotiate and descend the Rohtang pass, it will take only about 30 minutes to travel through the Rohtang tunnel.
Another way to access the area is by coming by air to Kullu and then travelling on the Leh-Manali highway to Kyelang.
Cham Dance in Lahaul and Spiti district, Himachal Pradesh, India
Lahaul and Spiti is the remotest district in India and the most beautiful one..The Cham Dance , also known as Devil Dance, here is being performed by the Monks of the Shashur Monastery in Keylong. Hope you will enjoy it as I did.
