Attersee, also known as Kammersee, English sometimes Lake Atter, is the largest lake of the Salzkammergut region in the Austrian state of Upper Austria. It is Austria's third largest lake by area, surpassed only by Lake Constance and Lake Neusiedl, which, however, both extend beyond national borders
Mondsee is a town in the Vöcklabruck district in the Austrian state of Upper Austria located on the shore of the lake Mondsee. The town is home to the historic medieval Mondsee Abbey. The cloister church was used for the site of the wedding in The Sound of Music

LAKES, PEAKS AND BLISTERS ????: Long-distance hiking in Austria, Salzkammergut
Lakes, peaks and blisters – we just returned from our first long-distance hiking experience. And what would have been a better place for that, than the fairly new BergeSeen Trail in our home region, the Salzkammergut. It not only loops through untouched nature, but leads to some of Austria’s culturally and historically most interesting towns (like Gmunden, Hallstadt, St. Wolfgang,…) and connects no fewer than 35 lakes (like Traunsee, Attersee, Mondsee, Fuschlsee,…). During our 5 day long hike – we covered a quarter of the whole trail – we had the goal to jump into every lake on the way, no matter how refreshing it was.
Lucky us, we were accompanied by a highly motivated team and two professional Austrian/German mountaineers, Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner and Ralf Dujmovits, who both have climbed all 8.000ers without oxygen supply. When do you ever get the chance to ask someone about how it feels to camp in a snow storm on top of Alaska’s highest peak?

The SchafbergBahn is the steepest cog railway in Austria. Since 1893 mighty steam locomotives have powered their way from the lake-side base station at St. Wolfgang to the 1783 m high summit of the Schafberg. The SchafbergBahn allows every visitor to conquer the mountain in comfort and style, making the entire journey an unforgettable experience!
Once at the top, magnificent Alpine views and warm Austrian hospitality beckon. Visit the Hotel Schafbergspitze, Austria‘s oldest mountain inn, originally dating from 1862! From the top you may see numerous Alpine lakes and the Dachstein glacier.
The journey to the summit of the Schafberg starts at the lake- side base station St. Wolfgang. After a few minutes, the track crosses the provincial border between Salzburg and Upper Austria and then continues its steep ascent through lush fields and green forests.
