(From wikipedia:
Many mammals roll in sand or dirt, presumably to keep parasites away or to help dry themselves after exercise or becoming wet. A sand roll, which is a stall or yard covered with deep sand, is traditionally included as part of stable complexes for use by racehorses after exercise.[18]
Dust bathing has been suggested to have a communicatory function in several mammals such as the degu, (Octodon degus),[19] the long-eared jerboa, (Euchoreutes naso),[20] and possibly in Belding's ground squirrel as they leave a pungent odor in the dust bathing areas.[21] It has been suggested that wallowing (a behavior similar to dust bathing) may serve functions such as thermoregulation, providing a sunscreen, ecto-parasite control and scent-marking.[22]
Road Trip through Manitoba, Canada
This summer, we worked with Travel Manitoba on a week long trip to explore some of the great urban and outdoor adventures offered throughout the province. We attended the Interstellar Rodeo music festival, relaxed at the Thermea Nordic Spa, ate at fantastic restaurants, visited the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, took a trolly tour of Winnipeg, went kayaking on Clear Lake, saw bison at the Lake Audy Bison Enclosure, went on numerous hikes, camped at Riding Mountain National Park and Spruce Woods Provincial Park, and so much more!

When we drove into the Bison compound I was expecting to see no Bison at all because that would be typical of what would happen to us but I was wrong.

Polar bears, beluga whales, the edge of the Arctic and the shimmering Aurora Borealis!Canada’s heartland province offers up plenty for adventurous travellers who want to discover that authentic Canadian wilderness and experience the jaw-dropping natural wonders that come with it.But, this under-the-radar province serves up an authentic cultural experience in the big city too, with more than its fair share of galleries, museums, fun festivals and events.Add to that the beach and lake-side pleasures of its pristine national and provincial parks, and you’ll see that there are plenty of reasons to start planning a Manitoba bucket list break now.Start your adventure in the province’s capital Winnipeg, with its easily-explored compact downtown core packed with must-see attractions, such as the fascinating Canadian Museum for Human Rights which takes you on an often heartbreaking journey exploring human rights through a visually stunning building.Or try the fun Manitoba Museum with its planetarium, amazing nature galleries, dioramas and full-size replica of the Nonsuch ship with its Hudson’s Bay Company links to London. The Forks National Historic Site has been a meeting place for over 6,000 years for the local First Nations, and then the trappers and traders of the fur trade; nowadays it’s a hub for entertainment and shopping with its access-all-abilities Adventure Playground, delicious market, and winter time skating on the frozen river— which also plays host to the unique Raw:almond pop-up restaurant which sells out each year to a crowd of warmly dressed foodies.Head out of the city centre to visit the Assiniboine Park Zoo with its brilliant Journey to Churchill exhibit of swimming polar bears, shaggy muskox and Arctic fox, and end the day unwinding at Thermëa, a Scandinavian-style spa; soak in outdoor hot pools overlooking the forest, sweat it out in steam rooms and saunas, brave the icy plunge pool and then enjoy a cheese and charcuterie platter over a glass of wine as you relax in a robe.Beyond the city with its cool artisan coffee scene and funky restaurants such as the Spanish-inspired Segovia or hip Corydon neighbourhood cocktail joint Roost, it’s a different world as you step into Manitoba’s untamed tangle of wilderness. From its lakes and rivers, boreal forest and prairies, to the seemingly endless Arctic tundra which leads to Hudson Bay and Churchill, the polar bear capital of the world, it's a dazzling bucket list bet in summer or winter. The short flight from Winnipeg whisks you away to the edge of the world. In summertime see the waters glinting with snow-white beluga whales, and sign up for an evening kayak trip to paddle with these friendly cetaceans.Watch them turn rosy pink as the sun sets. Travel out on the tundra with a guide in a specially-designed polar bear-proof buggy that’s capable of tackling the rough terrain; in summer you may see bears with their cubs amongst the sprigs of purple and pink wildflowers, but in winter they’re out in numbers roaming the snowy tundra, waiting for their seal hunt to begin.Get up close with less intimidating furry creatures on a dog sled tour, your huskies’ feet pitter-pattering across the snow as you race across the frozen tundra, marvelling at the beauty of the pristine wilderness. At night see the sky crackle with the awe-inspiring wonder of the Northern Lights; one of the joys of being so far from any light pollution means incredible viewing opportunities on more than 300 days a year. The little town of Churchill also boasts a terrific little Inuit art museum, an historic fur trade-era star-shaped bastion from 1771, Prince of Wales Fort, founded by the British Hudson’s Bay Company, which was partially destroyed by the French, and is now a National Historic Site, plus the tasty Gypsy’s Bakery, famous for their huge cinnamon buns, and Portuguese takes on regional specialities such as Arctic Char and Pickerel.Away from Hudson Bay, choose your beach-side pleasure in Riding Mountain National Park, where you can spot moose taking a cooling dip before breakfast, take a paddle in a kayak across Moon Lake, and spend the day hiking prairie meadows and boreal trails.See conservation work in action at the Lake Audy Bison Enclosure which holds a captive herd of 40 plains bison, in a re-introduction project to restore and protect the prairie ecosystem.Visit the quaint beach town of Wasagaming and take a paddle in Clear Lake or build a sandcastle on the beach. In summertime enjoy the free concerts and dance with locals by the shore. Explore First Nations culture at the Anishinabe Sharing Lodge where you can hear stories and myths and learn traditional crafts.
