Laguna Bacalar Yucatan Peninsula
Laguna Bacalar is a clear turquoise fresh water lake with a bottom of white sand surrounded by jungle. There is a small Spanish fortress and the area is a good layover while travelling south from Tulum onto other areas on the Peninsula.

If you visit Laguna Bacalar you will want to take a boat tour around. It is an amazing place and very photogenic. Bacalar is a very Mayan town with little English spoken except at Cenote Azul restaurant. It's a very nice restaurant with good food, but relatively expensive for Mexico. The main appeal of the restaurant is that it sits on the rim of Cenote Azul, a 300 deep 600 feet diameter cenote that is crystal clear and good for diving when the Caribbean is too rough. Because the water is so clear you can easily see quite deep. Rumor has it that it is the largest and supposedly the deepest Cenote in the Yucatan. Its arguably one of the cleanest.To make it a whole day's trip, you can also enjoy Lake Bacalar and see the San Felipe Fort in town.
Cenote Azul is a mature cenote and is documented as the largest in the Yucatan.

In this episode, we will take you along with us to Bacalar.
Laguna Bacalar is also known as the “Lake of Seven Colors” or “Lagoon of Seven Colors,” and for good reason.
The crystal clear waters and white sandy bottom of the lake cause the water color to morph into varying shades of turquoise, blue, and deep indigo throughout the day and in different depths.
Often referred to as Bacalar Lake, it is actually a series of waterways feed by underground cenotes that eventually lead to the Caribbean Sea. Bacalar lagoon has a diverse ecosystem supporting unique freshwater mangroves, ancient stromatolites and rare wildlife.
Once a passage for traders and real life pirates seeking the treasure of precious Campeche wood, the area is steeped in culture and history.

The Yucatan Peninsula - Mexico
A one-week adventure in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico.
First stop, officially Free and Sovereign State of Yucatan. It is located on the north part of the Yucatán Peninsula. It is bordered by the states of Campeche to the southwest and Quintana Roo to the southeast, with the Gulf of Mexico off its north coast. The locus of one of the seven wonders of the world, temple of Kukulcan in Chichen Itza also known as the “El Castillo.”
Somewhere in the North of Yucatan where Rio Lagartos is located where the site of the pink water beaches, also known as the Las Coloradas and the home of flamingoes.
Second is Quintana Roo. Officially the Free and Sovereign State of Quintana Roo. The Home of the famous city of Cancun, the islands of Cozumel and Isla Mujeres, and the towns of Bacalar, Playa del Carmen and Akumal. As well as the location of the ancient city of the Coba Ruins. A place also for many adventures where Xcaret stays and one of its famous Xplor.
The Yucatan Peninsula is a place for nature lover because it is full of Cenotes. And some famous and known cenotes are Gran Cenotes, Ik-kil, and Suytun Cenote. Also, for beach lovers and looking for their vitamin sea, Yucatan is the best place to go. Some of the famous playas are Playa del Carmen and Playa Santa Fe.
Mexico is one of the countries also very rich in culture and history. And to know about Mayan Civilization, Yucatan Peninsula is the place to go where Coba Ruins, Tulum Ruins, and the famous Chichen Itza is located. Many caves also existing in the Yucatan Peninsula where some Mayan priests offer their sacrifices like the Balankanche Cave. In arts, a lot of museums are in Tulum and one of it is the Sfer Ik, also the famous Ahau Tulum, a sculpture of Mother Nature.

Lake Bacalar Mexico - Seven Shades of Blue
They call Laguna Bacalar the Lake of Seven Colours because of all the different shades of blue and green that the water in this huge lake can be. So I tried to capture them all in this little GoPro video - and show just how much fun a visit to this lesser-known part of the Yucutan Peninsula can be.

LAGUNA BACALAR Boat Tour [Lake of Seven Colors] Mexico 2019
Looking for paradise on earth, without the heavy tourist footprint? Laguna Bacalar should top your list. It's no wonder why they call it Lake of Seven Colors!
Located in the state of Quintana Roo, crystal clear Laguna Bacalar, or Lake of Seven Colors, is approximately 42 km long and under 2 km at its widest.
The Laguna Bacalar is fed by underground rivers and this creates sinkholes when the limestone bedrock collapses, these are called cenotes. The Yucatan peninsula is famous for its cenotes and huge subterranean water tunnel system.
The Laguna Bacalar is best explored by kayak or by going on a boat tour. If you are lucky, the tour will give you an opportunity to dive in a cenote so you can explore the floor of the lake.
So why do we see these seven colors in the first place? Those collapsed limestone bedrocks I mentioned earlier disintegrate and the limestone dust covers the bottom of the lake. This white sand shows of various shades of blue depending on the depth at any given spot on the lake.
Laguna Bacalar truly is a secret paradise not know by many. The remote location has kept it resort free and the only tourists that come are backpackers and adventure travelers. You can get here by flying into Chetumal airport and then take a taxi to the town of Bacalar.
Hostels, cheap hotels, and Airbnb abound. All beaches are private and have a small entrance fee unless you are one of the lucky few to own a private villa on the lake shore.
This is Mayan country and as Miguel explained the Mayan culture is still strong in this part of Mexico. If you get tired of rest, relaxation, and frolicking in the gorgeous blue waters, there are a few small Mayan ruins to explore in the nearby countryside.
We are budget travelers after all so let's get a free spa treatment by slathering our bodies with the mineral-rich clay like sand. Just apply everywhere, let it dry and rinse off. So fun you can almost ignore the sulfur scent in the air. And it really did make the skin feel softer to the touch.
Make sure to explore the cement pirate ship before heading back to the boat. We booked our tour at the Kai Pez restaurant in town. The food here was really good, check out our meal here in my where to eat in Bacalar video linked above.
Laguna Bacalar is my closest experience to a tropical paradise on earth. It is rare to find such a gorgeous off the beaten path destination that's pretty much untouched by heavy tourism. Hopefully, it will stay that way for years to come.

The rose colored water is the result of the tiny marine micro orgnisms (plankton, brine shrimp, and red algae). As the water in the salt ponds evaporates, their concentration increases and the water becomes redder. They are a main food source for Flamingos. The Beta Carotene they contain is the reason for the Flamingos’ color. The natural salt production has been scaled up by the company that mines the salt today, and sadly bathers are no longer welcome. The town of Las Coloradas is a mining and fishing town amidst an ecological playground.

This amazing place is exactly how you envision. So colorful and the water is wonderful to swim in. It is fed by cenotes and has a channel that connects to the sea. Once an area attacked by pirates...hence the stone fort Well worth a drive while exploring the Yucatan of Mexico.

Mexico / Yucatan / Chichen Itza (Cancun)
Chichen Itza was the capital city for the loose conglomeration of Mayan settlements in the late classic period before the conquistadors arrived. The rules of Chichen Itza controlled most of the Yucatan and being able to walk in their footsteps was an honor.
One thing I was amazed by was the amount of people and organized tours were there. I went in the off season so I cant even imagine the peek of tourist season. It's a very busy monument but, you can see for yourself. If you decide to drive from Cancun during your vacation, expect a 2 hour drive at minimum. also watch the amount of money you are paying on various toll roads. Ask for the receipt before paying to avoid corrupt toll booth operators. Cancun is a beautiful place and the drive to Chichen Itza can be rewarding, just remember Cancun is a tourist town and off the tourist trail you're in the Yucatan Peninsula.
A drive through the Yucatan - See Mayan Villages & Mayan Hospitality

Traveling through the Yucatan Peninsula proved to be quite an eye opening experience, to see villages in such poverty contrasted with children with such happy faces.
