Irkutsk: Gateway to Lake Baikal
==========================
The de facto capital of eastern Siberia, Irkutsk is by far the most popular stop on the Trans-Siberian Railway between Moscow and all points east. The main reason to stop in Irkutsk is to visit beautiful Lake Baikal, spending at least one night by the shore of Lake Baikal, either in the main township of Listvyanka (70km from Irkutsk) or the more traditional Siberian village of Bolshoe Goloustnoe (110km from Irkutsk), or strike out further and spend a couple of days exploring Olkhon Island.
Apart from the lake, it is worth spending at least a couple of hours exploring the city of Irkutsk for the beautiful traditional wooden architecture. An overnight offers a chance to enjoy a city tour and a dinner at one of the many restaurants in town. With extra time, visit one of the Decemberists museums and learn more about this important junction of the Trans-Siberian.
In recent years Irkutsk has seen something of a tourist boom, spawning a municipally funded information center, detailed city maps planted at strategic points and a handful of freshly conceived museums, as well as the popular 130th District (130 Kvartal) project, an entire neighbourhood given over to typical Siberian timber buildings housing new restaurants, bars, cafes and the odd museum. The lovely Marussia Hotel located there is our favourite.
Lake Baikal: The Pearl of Siberia
=========================
Lake Baikal is the world’s largest freshwater lake by volume (7th largest by surface area), also one of the oldest lakes, and, at a depth of one mile, it is the deepest lake on the planet. The lake holds approximately 20% of earth’s fresh water, and its rich biodiversity is home to around 1,000 species of plants and a diverse marine life of up to 2,500 animals, 80% of which are endemic to the region. Lake Baikal was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1996.
Listvyanka
=========
Listvyanka is located 70km from Irkutsk and is the main township on the shore of Lake Baikal, making it an ideal stop for visitors with time only for one or two days by the lake. The village sits is found where the Angara River flows from the lake and begins its long journey, its close proximity to Irkutsk making it a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.
The village is reasonably picturesque, though it lacks the more spectacular ecology and scenery of Olkhon Island or the more tranquil setting at Bolshoue Goloustnoe, visitors will still take delight in the many wooden homes with their colorful window frames and picket fences and vibrant flowering gardens.
The small port provides the opportunity for visitors to enjoy a short boat cruise on the lake. Ferries also connect Listvyanka to Port Baikal on the opposite bank of the Angara River, where visitors pick up the Circum-Baikal train that traces a scenic journey along the shoreline to Slyudyanka.
There is plenty of interest in Listvyanka to keep visitors busy for two days. A small market sells local crafts and is a good place to pick up some tasty local omul fish for a picnic lunch on the lake shore. A trip to Listvyanka should certainly include a visit to the Limnological Museum, which provides a very good overview of the flora, fauna endemic to Lake Baikal.
There are good hiking trails in the forested hills and along the cliffs overlooking the lake, though it definitely helps to arrange a guided hike as the trails can be hard to find and the hiking is moderately difficult in parts. In winter, the focus shifts from hiking to cross-country skiing, snowmobiling or dog-sledging. There are a number of good restaurants for visitors to enjoy the local cuisine and relax after a day exploring the area.
Bolshoe Goloustnoe
=================
Bolshoe Goloustnoe (BG) is a traditional village on the shore of the lake, located 110km from Irkutsk in the Pribaikalsky National Park. Originally settled in the late 17th century, and built in the classic wooden style, BG is great if you are looking for a quieter, and an authentic local Siberian experience removed from the more tourist-friendly Listvyanka.
Our local partners host visitors in a comfortable guesthouse, rather than the former homestay set-up, which adds to the privacy while still offering the intimate chance to experience a small traditional Siberian village. Being a more traditional village, there is little in the way of shops of tourist restaurants, and less English spoken.

Russia/Lake Baikal (Listvyanka Omul Fish Market) Part 32
Welcome to my travelchannel.On my channel you can find almost 1000 films of more than 70 countries.
See the playlist on my youtube channel.Enjoy!
Lake Baikal, the only home of the omul fish:
The omul, Coregonus migratorius, also known as Baikal omul (Russian: байкальский омуль), is a whitefish species of the salmon family endemic to Lake Baikal in Siberia, Russia. It is considered a delicacy and is the object of one of the largest commercial fisheries on Lake Baikal. In 2004, it was listed in Russia as an endangered species.
The omul has traditionally been regarded as a subspecies of the Arctic cisco Coregonus autumnalis. However, recent genetic studies have shown it actually belongs to the circumpolar Coregonus lavaretus-clupeaformis complex of lake whitefishes, which also has other members in Lake Baikal, and it is now considered its own species within Coregonus. The four or five traditionally accepted subpopulations of omul within Lake Baikal are: North Baikal (северобайкальский), Selenga (селенгинский), Chivyrkui (чивыркуйский) and Posolsk (посольский). These vary in size, feeding behaviors and preferred spawning habitats. The extent of their reproductive isolation is debated.
The omul is a slender, pelagic fish with light silver sides and a darker back. It has small spots on its dorsal fin and larger ones on its head, a terminal mouth and a large number of gill rakers, typical of fish that feed in the pelagic zone.The mean size of adults is 36–38 cm and 0.6 to 0.8 kg, though the maximum reported length is 56 cm weighing about 2.5 kg. The subpopulations on the northern end of the lake tend to be smaller.
The omul feeds primarily on zooplankton, smaller fish, and occasionally some benthic organisms. It feeds primarily in the rich pelagic zone of Lake Baikal up to 345–450 m. It is a relatively long-lived, iteroparous species that attains reproductive maturity at five to 15 years of age. The omul only enters the rivers that feed Lake Baikal to spawn, initiating short spawning migrations, usually in mid-October, broadcasting 8000-30000 eggs before returning to the lake.
Omul is one of the primary food resources for people living in the Baikal region. It is considered a delicacy throughout Russia, and export to the west is of some economic importance. Smoked omul is widely sold around the lake and is one of the highlights for many travelers on the Trans-Siberian railway, and locals tend to prefer the fish salted. A popular Siberian salad called stroganina consists of uncooked frozen omul cut finely and served with pepper, salt and onion.

New adventure! In this trip we will be travelling to Siberia, Russia to go for a 5 hours trek to Bolshiye Koty village on Lake Baikal.
Lake Baikal is an ancient, massive lake in the mountainous Russian region of Siberia, north of the Mongolian border. Considered the deepest lake in the world, it’s circled by a network of hiking paths called the Great Baikal Trail. The village of Listvyanka, on its western shoreline, is a popular starting point for summertime wildlife-spotting tours, plus wintertime ice-skating and dog sledding.

Lake Baikal Cruise | Tours in Russia - Siberia
Come aboard a Lake Baikal Cruise and go beyond the reach of the day-trippers to the wildest corners of its majestic islands, hidden wildlife havens and sacred cultural sites.
You find more info on this majestic experience here
Lake Baikal is so big it makes its own horizon – little wonder it is sometimes mistaken as an inland sea! Having formed some 25,000 million years ago, Lake Baikal is the oldest and deepest body of freshwater on earth. Containing almost a fifth of the worlds entire unfrozen freshwater supply, the local people of southern Siberia have treated the ancient, life-giving Lake Baikal with deep reverence.
Covered ice for much of the year, it’s during the balmy summer months that Baikal becomes a boating paradise, with brilliantly blue calm waters, shimmering azure bays and a shoreline hugged by dramatic mountain ranges, pristine forests and quaint ethnic villages.
This relaxing six-day cruise allows you to explore all of Baikal’s most astonishing sights, including the overland sightseeing by foot and off-road vehicle on majestic Olkhon Island, a scared hub of the Buryat shamanistic religion. You’ll also have the rare opportunity to visit the Ushkany Islands, an isolated, wildlife-rich archipelago, where you have the chance to spot the shy but ridiculously cute and clumsy Baikal seal - the only freshwater seal in the world.
You’ll enjoy 5 nights aboard the MS Imperia, a spacious cruise ship refurbished in 2007. With a passenger capacity of 45, a crew of 18 and guaranteed amazing views from the expansive upper deck, you’ll be treated to great personalised service on this on-water exploration of Lake Baikal’s most picturesque islands and natural beauty spots.

Russians fight Chinese-funded bottling plant at Siberia’s Lake Baikal
Subscribe to our YouTube channel for free here:
A Chinese-funded company plans to bottle and sell Lake Baikal water. More than one million Russians have signed a petition amid local concerns about a surge in Chinese tourism and investment in the area. Russian court has halted construction of the US$21 million project in response to the backlash. Protestors say the plant will restrict access and “inflict irreparable damage” to the lake, which holds one fifth of the planet’s fresh surface water.
Baikal Lake, Siberia, Russia
Way to Russia Guides - Baikal Lake
Baikal is a beautiful magnificient lake in the middle of Russia, in Siberia. It's the biggest and the deepest freshwater lake in the world. The blue-clear water, pristine nature, and unique location make it a perfect place for a travel adventure. It is both enjoyable to go on a comfortable tour, and to stay on the shore of the lake in a tent. One feels united with the nature and enlighted.
This video film features Olkhon island — one of the main touristic attractions on the lake, as well as the ancient sacred area for local Shamans. Olkhon has a strange feeling to it: the island is quite remote and quiet, empty and impressive. It's great to live on the shore of Baikal hearing its soothing waves, walk around, and take a kayak or a boat for a few hours to go on the lake.
LAKE BAIKAL & The Hidden Beauty of Buryatia | Ulan-Ude, Russia
Lake Baikal, Buryatia, Russia - from the he small Russian family farm community on the border of Mongolia in Buryatia, we take a day-off from the Trans-Siberian Railway to experience the most popular attraction outside of Ulan-Ude; Lake Baikal.
Lake Baikal is the world's deepest lake and supplies the world with 1/5 of its fresh water. Lake Baikal is also the most ancient freshwater lake - originating some 20-25 million years ago!
We spent the day touring Lake Baikal with a great group of Buryat locals. They took us to the Ushkan Islands where we were able to see Lake Baikal's most famous resident - Nerpas!
Nerpas or Baikal seals, are one of the smallest true seals and the only seal who live exclusively in freshwater. They are also exclusive to Lake Baikal!
On day two around Lake Baikal we toured to Suvo Saxony; an incredible rock formation deep in the heart of Buryatia. Jetting out of the valley like prehistoric giants, there are many tales and legends around the distinct rock formations of Suvo Saxony (Suvinian Saxony).
From here we stop by a series of incredible salt lakes and then make our way back to Ulan-Ude.
In the morning, we take a tour of Ulan-Ude and experience Knowledge Day; The Russian holiday that marks the beginning of a new school year.
Ulan-Ude is a beautiful and diverse city.
After another delicious Buryat lunch, we head to the Ulan-Ude Train Station to catch the Trans-Siberian Railway once again.
This time, our Trans-Siberian Railway journey takes us to Vladivostok. Ulan-Ude to Vladivostok will take us three days across Siberia, into the far east of Russia.
Vladivostok will be our final stop of the Trans-Siberian Railway - stay tuned!

Lake Baikal (UNESCO/NHK)
Situated in south-east Siberia, the 3.15-million-ha Lake Baikal is the oldest (25 million years) and deepest (1,700 m) lake in the world. It contains 20% of the world's total unfrozen freshwater reserve. Known as the 'Galapagos of Russia', its age and isolation have produced one of the world's richest and most unusual freshwater faunas, which is of exceptional value to evolutionary science.

The Trans-Siberian Railway:
The Trans-Siberian Railway (TSR, Russian: Транссиби́рская магистра́ль, tr. Transsibirskaya Magistral; IPA: is a network of railways connecting Moscow with the Russian Far East. With a length of 9,289 kilometres (5,772 miles), it is the longest railway line in the world. There are connecting branch lines into Mongolia, China and North Korea. It has connected Moscow with Vladivostok since 1916, and is still being expanded.
It was built between 1891 and 1916 under the supervision of Russian government ministers personally appointed by Tsar Alexander III and his son, the Tsarevich Nicholas (later Tsar Nicholas II). Even before it had been completed, it attracted travellers who wrote of their adventures.
The Trans-Siberian line remains the most important transport link within Russia; around 30% of Russian exports travel on the line. While it attracts many foreign tourists, it gets most of its use from domestic passengers.
Today the Trans-Siberian Railway carries about 200,000 containers per year to Europe. Russian Railways intends to at least double the volume of container traffic on the Trans-Siberian and is developing a fleet of specialised cars and increasing terminal capacity at the ports by a factor of 3 to 4. By 2010, the volume of traffic between Russia and China could reach 60 million tons (54 million tonnes), most of which will go by the Trans-Siberian.
With perfect coordination of the participating countries' railway authorities, a trainload of containers can be taken from Beijing to Hamburg, via the Trans-Mongolian and Trans-Siberian lines in as little as 15 days, but typical cargo transit times are usually significantly longer and typical cargo transit time from Japan to major destinations in European Russia was reported as around 25 days.
According to a 2009 report, the best travel times for cargo block trains from Russia's Pacific ports to the western border (of Russia, or perhaps of Belarus) were around 12 days, with trains making around 900 km (559 mi) per day, at a maximum operating speed of 80 km/h (50 mph). However, in early 2009, Russian Railways announced an ambitious Trans-Siberian in Seven Days programme; according to this plan, $11 billion will be invested over the next five years to make it possible for goods traffic to cover the same 9,000 km (5,592 mi) distance in just seven days. The plan will involve increasing the cargo trains' speed to 90 km/h (56 mph) in 2010–12, and, at least on some sections, to 100 km/h (62 mph) by 2015. At these speeds, goods trains will be able to cover 1,500 km (932 mi) per day.
