Balkhash Lake – the pearl of Semirechye
In today’s episode of the program we are in the town Balkhash, which is in the Karaganda region. We are going to have a look in two things: the beautiful countryside here, specifically the lake, and some of the historic aspects of the region.

Spearfishing IN BALKHASH REGION
The avid fishermen will not be surprised to hear the story about great fishing in the Lake Balkhash. Each Kazakh fisherman has visited this beautiful place once. 150 warm days in a year ensure great fishing and underwater hunting. Unless the rain or storm is expected and air pressure drops, the fish swims in search of food and the fishermen sail in search of the fish.
If you decide to go fishing in the Lake Balkhash don't forget to take everything that is needed, including drinking water, food and enough fuel. The road to the Ili river estuary lies via semi-desert.
We are driving towards the Lake Balkhash. It is an inland, semi-freshwater lake on the south-east of Kazakhstan, the second biggest salt-water lake after the Caspian Sea and 13th in the list of biggest lakes in the world. The Lake Balkhash is divided into two parts by narrow strait: fresh-water part and salt-water one. This is the Balkhash's peculiarity. The Ili River flows into the lake.

We will meet scientists, fight fires, experience first-hand the release of tugai deer – the Hanguls – into the wild by the staff of the Ile-Balkhash Nature Reserve, and will try reaching the mysterious natural boundary of Korzhin.
Balkhash ranks the 14th in the list of the world's largest lakes. On the Eurasian continent, it is second in size after the Caspian Sea. The western part of the lake is fresh and the eastern section is salty. They are divided by the narrow strait of Uzynaral behind which almost all the time storms rage.

Central Asia's second-largest lake under threat - 23 Aug 09
It is Central Asia's second largest lake and home to more than three million people, but Kazakhstan's Lake Balkash is under threat.
The desert-locked sea is shrinking due to over-irrigation, caused in part by industrial neighbours such as China.
Many are concerned it could suffer the same fate as the Aral Sea, and eventually disappear.
Al Jazeera's Robin Forestier-Walker travelled with a team of scientists to Lake Balkhash - to find out why history could be about to repeat itself.

Lake Balkhash is one of the largest lakes in Asia and 15th largest lake in the world.It is located in southeastern Kazakhstan, in Central Asia, and belongs to an endorheic basin shared by Kazakhstan and China, with a small part in Kyrgyzstan.The basin drains into the lake via seven rivers.The major one is the Ili River, which brings the majority of the riparian inflow; others, such as the Karatal, provide both surface and subsurface flow.
