Lake Biwa (Japanese: 琵琶湖 Hepburn: Biwa-ko?) is the largest freshwater lake in Japan, located in Shiga Prefecture (west-central Honshu), northeast of the former capital city of Kyoto[1] Because of its proximity to the ancient capital, references to Lake Biwa appear frequently in Japanese literature, particularly in poetry and in historical accounts of battles. The term of Biwako was established in the Edo Period. There are some theories about the origin of Biwako, but it was generally believed that a stringed instrument Biwa is related to Biwako. Kōsō, a learned monk of Enryaku-ji in the 14th century, referred to a clue of Biwako in his writing; The lake is the Pure land of Benzaiten. Because she lives in the Chikubu Island and the shape of the lake is similar to Biwa, her favorite instrument.[2]
The lake was formerly known as Awaumi (淡海?, Freshwater Sea) or Chikatsu Awaumi (近淡海?, Freshwater Sea Near Capital). Later Awaumi changed to modern Ōmi, an etymology of Ōmi Province. The lake is also called Nio no Umi (鳰の海?, Little Grebe Lake) in literature. The area of this lake is about 670 km². Small rivers drain from the surrounding mountains into Lake Biwa, and its main outlet is the Seta River, which later becomes the Uji River, combining with the Katsura and Kizu to become the Yodo River and flows into the Seto Inland Sea at Osaka Bay.
It serves as a reservoir for the cities of Kyoto and Ōtsu and is a valuable resource for nearby textile industries. It provides drinking water for about 15 million people in the Kansai region. Lake Biwa is a breeding ground for freshwater fish, including trout, and for the pearl culture industry.
The Lake Biwa Canal, built in the late 1890s and later expanded during the Taishō period played a role of great importance in the rekindling of Kyoto's industrial life, after a steep decline following the transfer of the capital to Tokyo.
Lake Biwa is home to many popular beaches along the north-western shore, in particular, for example, Shiga Beach and Omi-Maiko. The Mizunomori Water Botanical Garden and The Lake Biwa Museum in Kusatsu are also of interest.
The Lake Biwa Marathon takes place in Otsu, the city at the southern end of the lake annually since 1962.Lake Biwa is of tectonic origin and is one of the world's twenty oldest lakes, dating to almost 4 million years ago. This long uninterrupted age has allowed for a notably diverse ecosystem to evolve in the lake. Naturalists have documented about 1100 species in the lake, including 58 endemic species.[citation needed] Lake Biwa is an important place for water birds. About 5,000 water birds visit Lake Biwa every year.
There are 46 native fish species and subspecies in the lake, including 12 endemic species and 5 endemic subspecies.[3] The endemic species are five cyprinids (Biwia yodoensis, Carassius cuvieri, Gnathopogon caerulescens, Ischikauia steenackeri and Sarcocheilichthys biwaensis), two true loaches (both undescribed species of Cobitis), two gobies (Gymnogobius isaza and an undescribed species of Rhinogobius), two silurid catfish (Silurus biwaensis and S. lithophilus) and a cottid (Cottus reinii).[3] The Biwa trout is also endemic to the lake, but some maintain that it is a subspecies of the widespread masu salmon rather than a separate species.[3] The remaining endemic fish are subspecies of Carassius auratus, Plecoglossus altivelis, Sarcocheilichthys variegatus and Squalidus chankaensis.[3]
Lake Biwa is also the home of a large number of molluscs, including 38 freshwater snails (19 endemic) and 16 bivalves (9 endemic).[4]
Recently the biodiversity of the lake has suffered greatly due to the invasion of foreign fish, the black bass and the bluegill. Bluegill were presented to the Emperor and later freed in the lake as a food source for other fish. Black bass were introduced as a sport fish. In July 2009, a largemouth bass weighing 22 pounds, 4 ounces (about 10.09 kg) was caught in the lake by Manabu Kurita. It has been officially certified by the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) to tie the largemouth bass world record held solely by George Perry for 77 years.Legislation to prevent eutrophication was enacted in 1981 and first enforced on July 1, 1982; therefore, this day is called Lake Biwa Day (びわ湖の日 Biwako no Hi?).

Shiga Again Part 2 - Kusatsu Hikari Festival 11/8/14
Happy New Year! I've been away again. The holidays were busy, and then when the vacation was over, life became even busier. Sorry about that. I promise I'm trying to get better. In the Part 2 video, we go from the castle ruins to the Kusatsu Hikari Light festival that they have every year. Thank you Time Out Magazine for letting me know about it. It was a great experience. Thanks for watching.

Shiga Part 2: Sightseeing with Tomoko 07-2013
After the shower climbing tour we met up for Spanish food at Spanish Bar Sol in Ohtsu and had a nice dinner with Tomoko and Atsushi. After trying Spanish food in Nagoya, we were not so impressed, but we had a great time.
The next day my kind sister-in-law Tomoko drove us around for some sightseeing. First we stopped to see Lotus flowers at the Mizunomori Lotus Pond in the Karasuma peninsula of Kusatsu City, but only saw the flowers on the lake, not in the greenhouses. The video I took there was with my cellphone, so the quality is poor. Sorry about that. There was a huge windmill that has been shut down for safety reasons. What a waste of money! You can see more cool pictures here:
Next, in Moriyama city, we stopped at another huge garden of sunflowers, Yoko's favorite flower. From there we headed to Hachiman City and took the ropeway up to Hachiman mountain for a cool view of the south side of Lake Biwa. Then down at Himure village we had sweets at the famous Taneya sweets shop.
After that, Tomoko drove us to Ikeda Farm, a nice traditional restaurant in Higashiohmi City, , which also has a gelato shop. Here is more info about the shop:
After our late lunch we went for a dip at a nearby hotspring, Happu-no-yu. There are some pix and info here:
Our day ended with a visit to a Japanese winery, 'Hitomi Wine' in Higashiomi City, for some wine tasting. Yoko bought some wine as a souvenir for tochan-kachan (her parents). Yes, this was a grand tour, just like the last time we visited her. Thank you Tomo-chan!!
Japan Travel: MIHO MUSEUM integrated into their natural surroundings , Koga, Shiga, Japan 06
Japan Travel: MIHO MUSEUM integrated into their natural surroundings , Koga, Shiga, Japan 06 Moopon
The Miho Museum stands deep in the forested hill west of central Koka and can be visited in a side trip from Kyoto. It was designed by the renowned architect, I. M. Pei, and is named after Koyama Mihoko, one of the richest women in Japan and the founder of the museum.
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the museum is the design of its structures and how they are integrated into their natural surroundings. This is highlighted in the museum's approach which leads through a mixture of man-made and natural environments. The inside of the museum continues this theme by contrasting steel and glass with warm stone and panoramic views of the surrounding valleys.
The museum's exhibits consist of works from ancient civilizations including the Egyptians, Romans, and various Asian cultures, with the pieces largely coming from Koyama's private collection. The main exhibit changes every year or so, and special exhibits change every few months. From Kyoto
Take the JR Tokaido Line (local, rapid or special rapid service) from Kyoto Station to Ishiyama Station (240 yen, 15 min). From there take Teisan bus number 150 to the Miho Museum (820 yen, 50 min). The bus departs from bus stop three and says Miho Museum in both English and Japanese on its sign.
The bus arrives at the museum's reception building which contains the ticket desk, gift shop, and a small restaurant. Purchase your tickets here before making your way to the museum's entrance either on foot (five to ten minutes) or by free museum shuttle. From Central Koka
Although there is a road that connects central Koka with the Miho Museum, there exists no direct public transportation between the two. Instead, a detour via Kusatsu and Ishiyama would be required. A rental car is recommended if you plan to visit both the Miho Museum and Koka's ninja attractions.
Hours: 10:00 to 17:00 (entry until 16:00)
Closed: Mondays (the following day if Monday is a national holiday). Closed irregularly for long periods of time between exhibitions. Please consult the schedule on the museum's website (see links below).
Admission: 1100 yen

Hou Kouen (豊公園) Park in Mid-Spring (Nagahama city, Shiga Pref., Japan)
My hometown is somewhere of north area of Shiga prefecture (滋賀県) in Japan, the name of which is Nagahama (長浜市). Nagahama is well known as the first place where Hideyoshi Hashiba (羽柴 秀吉), previous name of Hideyoshi Toyotomi (豊臣 秀吉), who was one of the heroes in the age of provincial wars of Japan (戦国時代), built the first castle of his own. It was in 1573 AD. (Sorry, I mistakenly said in the narration it was in 1873, but I was wrong.) The cite of the castle became a city park of Hou Kouen (豊公園), named after the Tycoon. I was able to have a chance again to walk around the park in cherry blossoms on an extremely fine day in this week, April, 05, 2013.
