Lake Bosumtwi
Lake Bosumtwi, situated within an ancient meteorite impact crater, is approximately 8 kilometres across and the only natural lake in Ghana.
Also very unique and special because, the Lake Bosumtwi impact crater was formed around one million years ago and is a sacred spot to the Ahshanti, who believe the dead come here to bid farwell ..
Visiting Lake Bosumtwi, Kumasi. Ghana's only natural Lake
Kumasi is a £20 half an hour flight or 5 hour bus journey from Accra.
Couchsurfing has been helping me really enjoy my time around Africa. I got a new host today, from Kumasi who happens to be a photographer so as you can imagine, cameras were flying everywhere
The history of the lake is beautiful, it means the Lake is sacred and fisherman can only fish using wooden planks! That's crazy
If you do end up going here, take advantage of the cheap accommodation, amazing food, chance to go on the Lake. Selorm my host sometimes comes with a tent and BBQs. Its lit

EASTER CELEBRATION AT LAKE BOSOMTWE IN ASHANTI REGION
Lake Bosumtwi, Ghana, March 2012
An early morning a Lake Bosumtwi which was created by some kind of craor impact from outer space. This is at Rainbow Garden Resort - a beautiful quiet resort just outside of Kumasi-ish. Spent two very relaxing nights there, swimming, eating and even rafting on logs with the fishermen!

Plank fishing, Lake Bosumtwi, Ghana
Traditional Ashanti Padua (plank) fishing on Lake Bosumtwi near Kumasi in Ghana.
The lake is formed in a meteor impact crater which is over a million years old. According to tradition, the Ashanti people consider Bosumtwi to be a sacred lake and there is a taboo against touching the water with iron.

Holy Waters: Ghana’s Sacred Meteorite Crater Lake
SUBSCRIBE to the Barcroft network:
THIS one million-year-old sacred lake was created when a giant meteorite crash landed in what was once a lush rainforest. In Ashanti, Ghana, Lake Bosumtwi is revered by locals as sacred and tradition dictates that they can only fish in the lake using wooden planks called paduas. Nowadays the lake - which stretches across 10.5 kilometres - is under threat from deforestation and modernisation.
