Robberies on the rise in Lake Chapala – a community in Mexico popular with expats
Roughly 50,000 expats from the U.S. and Canada relocated to what was considered to be a peaceful paradise in Mexico. But the community of Lake Chapala says crime has increased ten times in the past five years.
In the past decade, most of Mexico’s worst crime has been restricted to certain areas like the southern part of the country or along its border with the United States. But in recent years, violence - including home invasions, car-jackings and gun battles - has been spreading to neighborhoods long-thought to be peaceful and safe.
Lake Chapala, a retirement haven popular with expats from the U.S. and Canada, is one such community.
As a result of the increased crime, many transplanted foreigners in Lake Chapala have left Mexico. They have either returned home or re-located to other Latin American countries. The governments of the U.S. and Canada have both issued warnings to expats and tourists about Mexico’s violence.
Correspondent Alasdair Baverstock traveled to Lake Chapala to take a closer look at the escalating tension.

Voted #1 place to RETIRE in MEXICO: LAKE Chapala ????????????????
Mexico Voted # 1 in World To Retire: Lake Chapala – Largest Oldest Retirement Community for Expats
One of the most accommodating and charming place in Mexico is Lake Chapala. Located in Mexico’s central highlands, this area is the most popular overseas retirement destination for U.S. and Canadian expats, and it’s been so for nearly 100 years.
About an hour south of Guadalajara (Mexico’s second-largest city and just about in the middle of the country) Lake Chapala is Mexico’s largest freshwater lake. The international airport at Guadalajara, halfway between the city and the lake, is less than a 30-minute drive away.
Besides being close to the States (you can drive to the border at Nuevo Leon or Laredo in about 11 hours), another huge plus is the climate. At about the same latitude as Hawaii, but the same elevation as Denver, you’ll be hard-pressed to find better weather anywhere in the world. This, and the convenience of getting to and from the communities that border the lake, are two primary reasons this area is so popular with U.S. and Canadian expats.
As for cost of living, it’s much the same as elsewhere in Mexico ... much depends on your lifestyle. What will be true across the board, though is that utility costs here will be lower thanks to the mild climate. By living like a local, food costs can be low as well. Even the restaurants that cater to gringos are reasonable.
If you’re looking for an easy transition to expat life, Lake Chapala is the place for you. You can step right into expat life here with hardly any bumps along the way. You’ll find all the services you could want or need. The perfect weather and convenient location doesn’t hurt either. If you’re looking for a low-cost but top-quality destination, it doesn’t get much better than this.
Here is a link for more information about this amazing place for those interested in living there for their retirement :

We CAN'T Believe THIS is in the Middle of LAKE CHAPALA!
It's hard to believe this island in the middle of Lake Chapala has such crazy history. We were shocked!
►Get Tangerine perks!
The town of Mezcala is approximately 40 minutes away from Ajijic, Jalisco. When we arrived, we easily found a boatsman to take us to Isla de Mezcala for 300 pesos (for 3 people). We were allowed to stay on the island for one hour at that price, or pay more for additional time. A tour guide showed us around Isla de Mezcala, sharing the shocking Mexican history. (He did not set a price for his services, just asked for whatever tip we felt was appropriate.) One of the many pieces of history Jose shared was that there was a clash between the indigenous people, the Spanish, and the Mexicans living on the north shore of Lake Chapala, Mexico during the 1800s. Isla de Mezcala, also known as Isla de Presidio, truly has endured a lot over the course of Mexican history.
If you're looking for what to do at Lake Chapala or Ajijic things to do, we highly recommend this experience. It was very interesting to learn the history of the island and tour the fortress, prison, church, and other historic structures. Our guide, Jose even found some ancient artifacts while we were on the tour. In Jalisco, Mexico 2018 history remains!

This Mexican spa uses the natural thermal waters at Lake Chapala and funnels those qualities into an amazing spa experience! If you get the full VIP spa treatment, it's under $30 USD at today's exchange rate - for Americans in Mexico, that's a pretty darn good price! That service includes 5 various thermal baths such as a chocolate bath, mud bath, red wine, and apple cider vinegar baths. They do change the baths up from day to day, so you might be in for a surprise!
After finishing up with the thermal spa, there are natural saunas with fresh eucalyptus leaves that really do a lot to enhance the experience! After you finish up with that, you can then go onto a reflexology walk or relax in a hammock.
If you're looking for a cheap spa in Mexico, this is the place! Located in San Juan Cosala, Jalisco on the shores of Lake Chapala, just a short drive from Guadalajara! Spa website and Facebook: hotelspacosala.com &

See Ajijic & Lake Chapala Mexico from the Sky
The Lake Chapala & Ajijic Mexico area is a beautiful and magical place that thousands of people from all over the world call their home. Our goal with the following video is to show you it's beauty, but through a different perspective, from above. When we started filming it, we did not know it would turn out as well as it did. See for yourself and understand why the team at Access Lake Chapala invested so much effort and time into this video.
See detailed information on this video and why we filmed it on our webpage:
Although online you will find a few aerial clips of Ajijic that have been taken during the year 2014, we have been working on this video for almost 1 year, gathering all the shots we need to make it just right. We were rushing to release it sooner, however a video such as this takes allot of time, effort and team work to make sure you get each clip that shows the beauty and tranquility of Lake Chapala.
From the Jacaranda trees blooming in April to the Regatta de Globos (Hot Air Balloons) event in September, we have been patiently compiling clips and taking new shots since January of 2014 and finally released in November of 2014. The result of this video is proof of our dedication, love and respect for the town that we call home.
Access Lake Chapala has invested allot of time, effort, money and work into this video, in which we hope you will appreciate the beauty of the area and lakeside community.

Chapala Jalisco 2019 HD
Chapala is located on the shore of Lake Chapala in the state of Jalisco Mexico. A popular destination of the 'Tapatios' of Guadalajara now attracts many retires from North America since it is next door to well-know Ajijic Jalisco.
Lake Chapala/Jalisco, Mexico, a Paradise?
A very interesting photo/video show produced by a German/Canadian resident of Chapala for the last 7 years.
Many claim that this part of Mexico is a paradise. Why? Mainly because of its ideal climate, year round. During the winter season, Canadian and American Snowbirds come here to enjoy the mild weather. During the hot summer months in the south of the USA, Sweatbirds come here for the same reason, the weather. Many stay as permanent residents. There is beautiful and comfortable housing available, most with breathtaking views.
The images in this presentation are a documentation of the beauty of the area and you will understand why we like to live here.
Furthermore, the Mexican people are perfect hosts. They are friendly, honest and make you feel welcome and safe!
The lake itself is at an elevation of 1,500 meter/4,900 ft. The surrounding mountains are up to nearly 2,900 meter/9,500ft high. The annual average temperature is 26 Celsius/78 F.
Medical and Hospitals are very good, the International Airport Guadalajara, is only 30 Minutes away. Interesting folks meet here and form new friendships. This is not a tourist spot, but a spot from which you have a glance to paradise.
Enjoy this presentation! You will see also many interesting and beautiful images of our sunrises and sunsets!
