Weddings are memories we’ll live with forever, and when it comes to choosing where to get married, there are only a handful of places so beautiful you need to experience for yourself and lake Como is one of those special places.
Having already visited santorini, amalfi coast, and our own wedding in Anguilla we had high expectations, but we were still floored by the beauty of lago di Como and the mandarin oriental.
If you’re new to the channel, subscribe to get all of our travel guides and flight hacking tips as they’re released. If you want to follow along our journeys then follow our stories on Instagram @lifetailored
Getting to paradise is easier said than done. We flew in from Barcelona, after spending a magical 36 hours there. Check the link above to view our top spots in that city. But to get to lake Como, you want to fly into MXP and take a 1 hour car ride. We booked our airport transfer using Blacklane, and it couldn’t have been easier.
The app is just like Uber but you can book in advance and they have destinations all over the world. We used them after an 18 hour flight to Tokyo and it was a lifesaver. If you gave a trip coming up, use our link in the description to save money on your first booking.
The entrance to the Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como is the same as it was during its years as the resort known as CastaDiva: You enter at the gate house on the main road and then wind your way down the hill passing cottages and villas until you reach Villa Roccabruna, the 19th-century villa that was formerly the home of opera singer Giudetta Pasta.
The view from the property is stunning. It’s an unobstructed view from the east side of the lake and we spent every night watching the sun go down over the mountains.
For those of us not lucky enough to celebrate our wedding here, it’s at least within reach of honeymooners and we spotted a number of couples celebrating their anniversaries on the property as well.
// what to do in lake Como
The lake is best experienced on the water. Our first full day we took a romantic private boat ride up to Bellagio. Bellagio is situated on the apex of where Lake Como splits providing amazing sunsets.
The town itself has local craft stores, hotels and a number of lakeside restaurants. We grabbed a negroni and aperol spritz by the water and took in the beauty.
For the rest of our stay our days consisted of lounging by the pool, and trying out each of the restaurants.
We got to experience the gastronomic L~Aria, the more casual CO.MO Bar & Bistro and got to sample (almost) all of the local Amaros and Vermouths.
You must try the house made spaghetti and local clams and for an Italian restaurant the burger really hit the spot after a break from pasta.
To fly home from Lake Como we again tapped into our chase ultimate rewards points. We flew business class on United for just 155k miles. With flights clocking in near $6k each, we got $.04 point per mile. For more details on how to take your dream trip with points, checkout the link in description.

Porlezza, Lake Lugano, Como, Lombardy, Italy, Europe
Porlezza is an Italian town of 4,849 inhabitants in the province of Como in Lombardy. Lying on the shores of Lake Lugano (Ceresio alias), Porlezza is a place with a strong tourist in the summer months is a destination for many tourists, especially Dutch, German and Swiss. Remarkable in the evening of 16 August the traditional fireworks on the lake, during the celebrations of San Rocco. Particularly valuable it is also in the seasons of spring and autumn, when the natural setting of the pre-Alps is filled with the rich colors of the local flora. A Porlezza is the parish church dedicated to St. Victor, one of the 57 medieval churches of the ancient diocese of Milan. The antiquity of the church is shown by its peripheral location compared to the episcopal see of Milan and dedicated to one of the most venerated saints in the city: all eight other churches with this titration (Arcisate, Watford, Castelseprio, Cannobio, Casorate Primo, Corbetta, Missaglia and Varese) are in fact on the periphery. The village is located in the Italian territory, the northeastern end of Lake Lugano (Ceresio). It can be reached either through Switzerland, along Ceresio from Lugano in the northeast, is remaining in Italian territory, along the State Road 340 Queen until Argegno and then going through the Val d'Intelvi, or until Menaggio where the deviation for Porlezza through the valley of the same name. The village is surrounded by green mountains, a destination for excursions and walks. In addition to the main center, they make up the Municipality of Porlezza fractions of Tavordo, Begna, Agria and Cima; the latter, the picturesque village is located along the north shore of Lake Lugano, along the highway leading to the neighboring town of Valsolda. Of great historical interest, the hamlet of Cima has maintained a typical medieval structure, with the remains of ancient walls and fortifications. A few kilometers from the village, in the direction of Menaggio, you can visit the Lake Plan, nature reserve and site of Community importance of the European Union, and, going to the Val d'Intelvi, caves Rescia, full of evocative stalactites and stalagmites, and the famous gorge of Osteno (a deep gorge carved by a river). The first inhabitants of these areas were the Gauni, which christened the lakeshore calling them Gaune banks. Porlezza, in ancient times, is shown with Porletia often Prolectia and Proletia, in various writings and also with the name of Porlexe Portolexe; It is also Laetitiae Portus, a name indicating the ancient port. In the tenth century Porlezza, until then feud of the Marquis Corradidi of Lecco, Attonidi, came under the control of the Archbishop of Milan. During the war between Como and Milan (1117-1127), Porlezza was a stronghold of Milan and, after the defeat of the city lariana, remained part of the county of Milan. (The same fate had, from the thirteenth century, although the Varese and Lecco). Such compartmentalization administrative survived for centuries, until the reforms of Emperor Joseph II Enlightenment; in 1786 the town of Lake Lugano was included in the province of Como. The brother of Emperor Leopold II, nullified the act of transfer in 1791, but the revolutionary Jacobins riproposeo in 1798, only to withdraw it again the following year. It was not until 13 May 1801 that the Government of the Italian Republic decided the final annexation of the province of Como Porlezza. From the religious point of view, however, Porlezza remained - and remains so - under the Diocese of Milan. The fall of Napoleon, the Congress of Vienna in 1814 sanctioned the birth of the Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia, conceived by Metternich; Porlezza was designated as the capital of the district of the province of Como VI, established the following year. In 1859, following the War of Independence, the Peace of Zurich ordered the annexation of Lombardy (Mantua and excluded most of his province) to the Kingdom of Sardinia. In 1928, when the fascist regime decided to suppress a number of municipal entities, they were annexed the two villages of Cima and Tavordo. Tavordo constituting an ancient town in the Milan and, since 1801, the Como, similar to what happened to Porlezza; in 1807 the town of Tavordo was a first time joined Porlezza following a royal decree of Napoleon and, later, was restored by the return of the Austrians. Cima was rather detached from the just suppressed municipality of Cressogno, which merged in the newborn Common Valsolda set up by the desire to restore the ancient unity of the valley of the same name. On 1 December 2013 a consultative referendum on the merger of the municipalities of Porlezza, Valsolda, Claino with Osteno, Corrido and Val Rezzo got a negative result.
