Happy Heritage Week! This year’s theme in British Columbia is “Main Street: At the Heart of the Community”, Feb 16 – 23, 2015. Like the people of British Columbia, main streets and traditional downtowns can be diverse. There are similarities within these epicentres as they often are built around the foundation of business and commerce. However, what is truly at the heart of community is the people and the history of relationships that have been built and evolved over extended periods of time. This Heritage Week celebrates the history of our Main Streets and the revitalization of people coming together, sharing stories of the past as well as visions for the future, connecting with one another on a truly personal level. The spirit of heritage is alive in our main streets and the more it is celebrated, the more it is appreciated.

Shani Wendell

Shani Wendell has been teaching dance in the Okanagan since 1993 and opened the Lake Country School of Dance in 1999. She is an award-winning instructor and choreographer, an adjudicator, a member of the Canadian Dance Teachers
Association, and a certified Stott Pilates instructor. She has choreographed and produced numerous stage shows including Cats, Grease and Chicago with the Full Moon Theatre Company. Shani was awarded the Young Entrepreneur of the Year twice from the Lake Country Chamber of Commerce, the YM/YWCA's Young Woman of Distinction Award in 2004, and the Paul Harris Award by the Rotary Club of Lake Country.
Since opening her studio, Shani Wendell has been able to expand and grow the dance community of Lake Country with both her inclusive classes and more competition-oriented programs. With the school expanding in size and prestige, Shani has increasingly been able to provides classes to all ages in genres ranging from ballet to hip-hop to gymnastics. Bringing in distinguished choreographers to guest teach has provided Shani, the community, and the students the opportunity to learn from various professionals, resulting in proficient and well-rounded dancers who can hold their own in any dance environment. Shani discusses the benefits of having dance as a part of the community and her aspirations for the future of dance and the arts in Lake Country.

Central Okanagan Heritage Week 2014
Heritage Week BC is an annual celebration of the province's unique natural and cultural heritage and takes place from February 17th to 23rd, 2014. This year's theme Heritage Afloat! recognizes the importance of our waterways in early transportation and continuing recreation. The Okanagan is blessed with an abundance of water. Most of our towns and cities have been built next to lakes and rivers — and where we built roads and railways on land, they linked waterways to create a complete transportation network.

Having Fun at Kangaroo Creek Farm in Kelowna (Lake Country), BC
Had a chance to visit Kangaroo Creek Farm this spring while camping in Kelowna area. All the animals are super friendly and you can feed and pet them. Definitely recommend visiting even if you don't have kids. Great spot to take some cool photos. Besides kangaroos, they have capybaras, emus, goats, parrots, wallaroos, sugar gliders and etc.

To access both the Grizzly Den Trail and Raven Lake Trail drive east following Highway 16 to Hungary Creek, a distance of approximately 88 km from the east end of the Yellowhead Bridge in Prince George. As you travel along Highway 16 east you will pass by the Sugarbowl Trailhead (80 km) and the Viking Ridge Trailhead (85 km), both within the boundaries of Sugarbowl - Grizzly Den Provincial Park. About .3 kms past Hungary Creek, turn right on to the Hungary Creek Forest Road and drive south keeping on the main road. After about 13 kms you will reach the Grizzly Den Trailhead parking lot, and about 2.6 km beyond this parking lot you will reach the Raven Lake Trailhead parking lot.Sugarbowl – Grizzly Den Provincial Park is the closest alpine recreation area to Prince George.Beautiful place to hike,and camping.The distance from the parking to the lake is 5,500km.
Chris Malmkvist

Chris Malmkvist was born in Helsingborg, Sweden and immigrated to Canada with his parents in 1957. He has lived in the Carr’s Landing area of Lake Country since 1974. Chris is an eclectic artist and works in many mediums, often incorporating numerous techniques into his paintings and etchings. Incorporating paint brush, air brush, erasers, technical pens - if the tools are handy he
uses them - whatever it takes to get the results he seeks.
Chris’s work has been shown and purchased internationally, from Canada to the UK, including a purchase by Prince Philip of the British Royal family, to Sweden, Japan, and New Zealand.
He has also developed a reputation as a stone sculptor, and was one of the artists chosen to create a public art sculpture representing the local fruit industry.
In this interview, painter, sculptor, and printmaker Chris Malmkvist shares his experiences as an artist working in Lake Country, and comments on his own work, as well as the artistic community’s growth. A participant in Art Walk and the Carr’s Landing Art Tours, Chris has seen the Lake Country art community grow from nothing to its present vibrancy, and offers insights into the directions in which he would like to see the community grow further. Chris also discusses his childhood, his artistic origins in woodwork, and how his practice eventually developed into a professional career. Chris refuses to compromise his artistic vision and sense of experimentation, and continues working to challenge himself in new genres, mediums and subject matter.

Filmmakers Wendy Ord and Glen Samuel have over forty-five years combined experience in the film industry. They’ve garnered critical acclaim as writers and producers of dramatic feature films, short films and video projects with “emotional resonance”. Their work has been broadcast on every major network in Canada and
has shown in festivals around the globe winning dozens of national and international awards.
Wendy’s first feature film, Black Swan, was theatrically released in 2003 and has won numerous international awards including Best Director, Best Production, Best Actress, and Best Cinematography. Wendy was the first female Assistant Director in Canada and as such has hundreds of hours of film and television to her credit. Glen started in the business by winning massive acclaim for his first feature screenplay The Lesser Evil. With a background in high tech electronics, Glen’s skills as camera operator, editor, and octocopter designer and operator round out Mountain Lake Film’s abilities to deliver high quality projects.
Wendy and Glen of Mountain Lake Films have created a niche for themselves in independent filmmaking, despite the absence of a notable film industry in Lake Country. Seeking to use film as a vehicle for their artistic and socio-political commentary, Wendy and Glen have successfully transgressed the boundaries and confines of a single genre in their pursuit of stories to tell and films to produce. They also discuss the film business: the challenges associated with producing films in an environment that is becoming saturated with video-media, and the financial consequences of this trend. However, they also discuss the advantages of technological advancement and in particular, their new Octocopter, a tool which is slowly eclipsing the need for helicopters and planes for panoramic and sweeping aerial footage.

'Winsome Winnie Winfield'
Winnie Draper Heyworth was born in Glenella, Manitoba July 27th, 1916. Her family moved to Winfield, British Columbia in 1926.
Winnie began working in the Winfield packinghouse when she was 14 years old, first as a sorter then as a packer.
In this interview, Winnie recounts her experiences as an apple packer and how she earned her nickname 'Winsome Winnie Winfield'.
The interview is part of the Lake Country Museum's Community Memories exhibit, 'Applebox Belles: The Women of Lake Country's Packinghouses'.
