MYSTERIOUS VOLCANIC CRATER LAKE IN THE PHILIPPINES - BecomingFilipino Leyte Guide
I was reminded once again... the Philippines is mysterious and mesmerising!
Welcome to the crater lake of Mt. Cabalian in San Juan, Southern Leyte. This active volcano last erupted in 1820 and stands 3100 feet tall overlooking the Cabalian Bay.
Kumar and I knew nothing about this place and just saw it randomly on google maps. Because it looked so interesting... We talked to locals in San Juan, found a guide, and spent two hours trekking through dense jungle. Upon reaching the crater lake we said...
“Tabi-Tabi po”.
The green water and surrounding area was both mysterious and mesmerising! I did go for a swim, and shockingly, even though the lake is high up... it wasn’t that cold! Maybe the volcanic environment has something to do with that?!
Yup, Southern Leyte is home to this natural wonder! A mysterious volcanic crater lake in the Philippines!
AYUS!

Lake Danao Ormoc -- A haunted lake in Leyte??!
You wouldn't believe that this beautiful lake was once enveloped with strange and fearful ghostly stories in the past, stories such as a huge creature pulled a swimmer down to the bottom of the lake and the dead body surfaced in the ocean couples of months later. Or a very big eel that swallowed a boy who was just fishing by the lake.
With all those stories that swathed this lake's history for many years, they were just hearsay after all. But you see me in this video swimming just an arm-length from the cottage. I did not dare to swim far because I still got some fear about those rumors from the past. Fear got the best of me this time...eheheheh
Despite all the scary rumors, this lake remains spectacular and stunning. It's a must-visit attraction in Leyte.
My apologies for the overexposed/underexposed video shots. This was my first time to use an entry-level dslr. I set it to manual and I never thought that it would appear unlikely on screen. I'll get better at it in the long run... Just bare with me...hehehe
Background music: I do not own these music... I do not intend to monetize them as well..

Lake Danao National Park is the #1 tourist destination in Ormoc City according to TripAdvisor and was also proclaimed as one of the eight lakes in the Philippines everyone should visit according to Rappler.
According to experts, this lake is volcanic in origin like the popular Taal Lake in Tagaytay City. It is a depression produced by the Leyte Central Fault, an active fault passing through the lake area in N-S direction. Most rock formations that surrounds the lake are andesitic volcanic rocks.
The lake is a great place for swimming, boating, kayaking, or fishing. You can also check the Lake Danao View Deck and enjoy sight-seeing the breathtaking view of the entire lake.
Have a trip up the mountains and visit plantations of sugar cane and pineapples along the way. Picnic tables and toilets are also available making it an ideal place for camping, trekking, picnics and retreats.

This lake was formerly called as lake Imelda. Hiindi ko alam sinong Imelda. Imelda Marcos o Imelda Papin? Haha. Anyway, ang lake na ito ay guitar-shaped, nakakamangha. Kaya lang walang signal sa lugar. Kaya you better keep your cellphones or mag picture at mag enjoy na lang.
