Australia - Mount Field National Park
Mount Field National Park offers a diversity in vegetation, ranging from tall swamp gum forests and massive tree ferns at the base of the mountain, through rainforest along the Lake Dobson Road, to alpine vegetation at the higher elevations.
We visited Australia on one of our overland trips; see our channel for hundreds of clips.

Waterfalls & Wonderment | Mt Field National Park, Tasmania
Tasmania is renowned for it’s largely untouched landscapes and it’s countless national parks (nearly each one heritage listed). For those reasons alone, it’s only natural that a visit to the island state involves plenty of time exploring the outdoors!
On our way from Hobart to Lake St Claire, we took a little detour and stopped at Mt Field National Park. A little over an hour outside of the city, Mt Field is a rather incredible place.

Russell Falls, Mount Field National Park, Tasmania [Australia]
Russel Falls is arguably Tasmania's prettiest waterfall; it's certainly Tasmania's most photographed and one of the easiest to get to.
The falls are in Mt Field National Park, part of Tasmania's World Heritage Wilderness Area, just over a 1-hr drive from Hobart. One of three falls that share the same watercourse, Russel Falls has a unique character and is the centrepiece of the park.
The falls consist of two main drops with a pleasing segmented, vertical appearance. This, along with its size, gives it a personality all its own.
The 20-minute return walk to the falls is on a good track and boardwalk through lovely rainforest. The walk passes through towering swamp gums and species typical of wet forests and cool temperate rainforests such as dogwood, musk and myrtle. Closer to the falls the track is framed by stunning tall tree ferns.
You can return via the same track or follow the creek back by crossing the bridge below the falls.
For local campers, a walk to the falls at night is made easier with a wooden handrail that follows the path into recesses that are the home of glow-worms. It's truly magical to turn off your torch and find yourself surrounded by hundreds of little lights like stars in the sky.
The two other falls in the park, Lady Barron Falls and Horseshoe Falls, are enchanting in their own right and if you have time are worth the extra effort.
An excellent walk that offers the best of the park's lower altitude tracks includes Russell Falls, Lady Barron Falls and the Tall Trees Walk past giant Eucalyptus regnans, amongst the tallest trees in Australia and the tallest flowering plant on Earth. They are truly spectacular and not to be missed.
A second visitor section, 15 km further up the mountain, takes you to Lake Dobson and the longer day walks. Dramatic mountain scenery and unique alpine plant communities are a feature at this higher altitude.
From Hobart, the drive to the park passes through the beautiful Derwent Valley following the Derwent River for most of the way. Take the opportunity to stop at New Norfolk, one of Tasmania's oldest towns and a great place to find antiques and collectables.
Mt Field has camping facilities, toilets, electric barbecues, kiosk and a visitor centre near the start of the track. Cabins are available just outside the park boundary.
Russel Falls makes a great day trip and will give you a real taste of Tasmania's magnificent wilderness within an easy drive from Hobart.

On the day we only took the extra time to check out Horseshoe Falls - to make a second 15km trip further up the mountain to Lake Dobson.
With Dramatic mountain scenery and unique alpine plant communities are a feature. We were surprised and amazed on the day that there was snow! we took a quick walk all around Dobson Lake.

Scenic Drive from Mount Field to Lake Dobson - Tasmania - Time Lapse
Scenic drive on Lake Dobson Rd from the visitor centre at Mount Field National Park up to the top to Lake Dobson.
There are some great walks at the top - including one of Tasmania's 60 Great Short walks - Pandani Grove - which goes around the lake and has some great views.
The road is a 16 kilometre unsealed road. It is not suitable for campervans/motorhomes etc. Due to snow conditions vehicles using this road may require chains in winter; at times the road may be closed. Phone 6288 1319 for information on road conditions.
A parks pass is required to access this area - this can be purchased from the visitor centre.
The Visitor Centre at the entrance of the park provides information on walks as well as comprehensive interpretation of the history, geology, plants and animals of the park. It's a great place to start your day and to learn more about the special features of the park.
The Visitor Centre also has disabled access toilets and an independently operated café and shop.
Turned back by the Snow - Mt Field | Tasmania 2019
The plan was to tackle the twisted tarn circuit in Mt Field national park to catch some fish. Instead we lost the track and had to turn back as the weather closed in. We stayed in government huts near lake dobson which were amazing value at $45 a night. Mt Field national park is still one of my favorite places in Tasmania. it's even more beautiful in the snow!

MOUNT FIELD NATIONAL PARK
HOW beautiful is this place! Incredible how we did a rainforest walk to an astounding waterfall (Russell Falls) and then the next day drove 16k up a mountain and it was a completely different eco system. That is basically Tasmania in a nutshell; you can drive 5 hours from top to bottom and drive through 5 different climates.
I can’t believe I worked less than an hour away from here last year but never made the trip out to see it! Accomplishing all the things I wasn’t able to do last year, now!

Mt Field, Tasmania - Government huts, Lake Dobson Road & Russell Falls
An enjoyable weekend away, June 2016.
Lucky to get a good covering of snow considering the accommodation was booked a few months before hand. We had a great time! The toboggans on snow covered tracks, toasty wood heaters in the Government huts near Lake Dobson & the stroll through Rainforest up to the beautiful Russell falls among some of the highlights.
