The Lake That Burned Down A Forest (Full Length)
VICE News travels to the Dominican Republic, site of a looming environmental and economic crisis many experts believe is the result of climate change. Lake Enriquillo is the largest lake in the Caribbean — and for the past 10 years, it's been getting larger.
Having already doubled in area, the lake is destroying everything in its path and displacing local residents who are being forced to take extreme measures to survive.

STORYLINE:
Lake Enriquillo in the Dominican Republic and the smaller Lake Azuei in nearby Haiti have steadily swelled, submerging homes and farms as well as disrupting trade by occasionally blocking a key cross-border highway.
No one thought much about it when Enriquillo, the largest lake in the Caribbean began rising in a year of heavy rains, but then it never stopped.
The two lakes are only three miles (five kilometres) apart and are fed by some of the same streams.
It's been a slow-motion disaster and potentially catastrophic for two countries already burdened by major environmental challenges.
The waters' rise has worsened exponentially in recent years, especially after heavy rains in 2007 and 2008 hit the island of Hispaniola, which both countries share.
Tropical Storm Isaac dumped more water on the region last month, inflicting yet more damage.
While the cause remains a mystery, theories as to why the lakes are rising range from sediment and rubbish clogging the water system to increased rainfall from climate change and heavy storms.
What is clear is that the rising lake waters are impacting lives.
In Haiti, heavy rains made the situation worse last year and dozens of families were forced to evacuate.
If the water rises again we'll move farther up the hill, we don't have another place to go, said Cathleen Pierre, who was driven from her home by flooding.
She and her family live in a rickety collection of shacks sandwiched between Lake Azuei and the mountains.
The high cost of living in Port-au-Prince makes sure they stay there.
Across the border in the Dominican Republic, farmer Noel Batista says the rising of lake Enriquillo has been a slow-moving disaster for the village of Boca de Cachon.
Since 2011, the water has kept rising and rising until it reached where it is now.
In all, some 10,000 families have lost cattle, farmland or their homes.
