Read more about the movement behind the Lake Erie Bill of Rights:
The Lake Erie Bill of Rights is the first law of its kind in the United States. In February of 2019, the residents of Toledo, Ohio voted to give Lake Erie's entire ecosystem legal rights. That means any citizen of Toledo, if they have credible evidence that a corporation or government is harming the lake, can file a lawsuit on behalf of Lake Erie in court.
The Lake Erie Bill of Rights is part of a larger movement to give legal rights to mountains, rivers, forests, and other natural objects. The citizens of these communities -- from Pennsylvania, to Ecuador, to New Zealand -- argue that because their long-term survival is dependent on the health of their natural surroundings, anything that harms the lakes, rivers, or forests they depend on should be considered a legal harm.
It’s a totally new way of approaching the law, and it could change the very nature of our relationship with the natural world. This is how one community in Ohio started what they hope will be a nationwide movement.

The Erie Canal Documentary - Geographic History
The Erie Canal Documentary - Geographic History.
From the first days of the expansion of the British colonies from the coast of North America into the heartland of the continent, a recurring problem was that of transportation between the coastal ports and the interior. Close to the seacoast, rivers often provided adequate waterways, but the presence of the Appalachian Mountains, 400 miles (640 km) inland, presented a great challenge. Passengers and freight had to travel overland, a journey made more difficult by the rough condition of the roads. In 1800, it typically took 2.5 weeks to travel overland from New York to Cleveland, Ohio [460 miles (740 km)]; 4 weeks to Detroit [612 miles (985 km)].

Celebrating the Comeback of the Burning River, 1969-2019
To many, the Cuyahoga River fire on June 22, 1969 represents a turning point for environmental regulation. This river caught the attention of a nation due to excessive water pollution. Certainly not the worst, it was thrust to the forefront as a symbol of environmental degradation. With the formation of the U.S. EPA in 1970 and passage of the Clean Water Act in 1972, changes were in store for all waterways in the United States. In addition to the Clean Water Act, the Cuyahoga River was one of 43 Areas of Concern identified by the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement. These programs and regulations were focused on improving the lives of those both in and near the water. Now 50 years later, how is this river doing in its recovery “fueled” by local, state and federal partners?

We’re the Great Lakes
We separate Canada from the United States
The Great Lakes
Are the largest body of fresh water on Earth to date
We’re the Great Lakes
There are only five of us to celebrate
The Great Lakes
come to visit all of us so you can appreciate
Hello I’m Lake Superior
It’s great to know you
I am the largest of the Great Lakes of North America this is true
Canadian Province, Ontario
Touches my north shores
And the US State
of Minnesota’s in my West of course
To the South, I touch Wisconsin
and Michigan you can see
And roughly 3 Quadrillion Gallons of water
I hold in me
I’m the largest freshwater lake by, surface area known
With 31,700 Square Miles
to swim and roam
I’m Lake Michigan
a North American lake I be
And the only one of the great lakes
in the US completely
I touch the states of Wisconsin, Illinois,
Michigan and Indiana
And I’m the 5th Largest Lake in the world
By Surface Area
The word Michigan’s derived from the Ojibwa Indian word Mishigami
It means “Great Lake”
And that’s why they gave the name to me
We’re the Great Lakes
We separate Canada from the United States
The Great Lakes
Are the largest body of fresh water on Earth to date
We’re the Great Lakes
There are only five of us to celebrate
The Great Lakes
come to visit all of us so you can appreciate
Lake Huron here the second largest of the Great Lakes by surface area
23,000 Square Miles of fresh water
I’d like to share with ya
I touch Ontario to the North and East and
Michigan through the South and west
Lake Michigan’s connected to me by Straits of Mackinac I attest
I am Lake Ontario
The Far East of all the Great Lakes
And I am the smallest lake
of the Great Lakes to date
I’m surrounded on the North and West and Southwest by Ontario
And on the south and east by the American state of New York Now you know
I’m Lake Erie the fourth largest of the Great Lakes in North America
The 13th Largest Freshwater Lake In The World By Surface Area
I touch New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan in the US
In the North, I touch the Ontario of Canada now go pass your test
We’re created by Glaciers Advancing and Retreating over thousands of years
The Glaciers Melted Filling Freshwater where erosion had appeared
