Hokkaido Japan Day 8 | Nemuro, Japanese Shrines and Hokkaido Cheesecake
This is Day 8 of living in a van in Japan, driving all over Hokkaido Japan. Today we went from Nemuro to cape Nosappu. Today was a little different as we didn't sleep in the van! We actually booked into a nice little B&B because it was Aska's birthday. We found a quiet shrine, ate lots of crab and much more.

Japanese Waterbirds, Hokkaido 2019
Ever since I saw the BBC documentary Earthflight, I've wanted to go to Hokkaido in Japan to see its many beautiful birds frolicking and feeding in the snow. And in February, as a somewhat unexpected treat from my parents, I finally got my chance! And boy was it a dream come true. In all my years of birdwatching, I don't think I've ever been anywhere more beautiful or more peaceful and quiet than Hokkaido. And of course the birding is to die for. For those of you who are interested, we went to the Akan Crane Centre (Cranes), Lake Kussharo (swans) and Lake Furen (eagles), all located within a few hours drive from Kushiro.

野付半島 北海道 Notsuke Peninsula, Hokkaido JAPAN
Notsuke-Fūren Prefectural Natural Park 野付風蓮道立自然公園 is a Prefectural Natural Park in eastern Hokkaidō, Japan. Established in 1962, the park spans the municipalities of Betsukai, Nemuro, and Shibetsu. The park comprises two principal areas, the Notsuke Peninsula 野付半島 and Lake Furen.
Japan's largest sandbank provides for breathtaking sightseeing. Fir trees washed and withered by seawater are glorious sights. Notsuke Peninsula is made up of fields and marshes, and at 28 kilometers in length, it is Japan's largest branching sandbank.

別海町と根室市にまたがる風蓮湖。その北側の別海町側には走古丹（はしりこたん）と呼ばれる細長い砂州があります。その先端まで行ってみました。

秋の風蓮湖、ここ汽水湖は鳥たちの楽園。
台風崩れの熱帯低気圧の通過で天候は良くなかったけど、白鳥やタンチョウ、鴨などの水鳥を見ることが出来ました。
Winter Wildlife in Japan
Japan trip : 14 to 24 Feb 2012.
Arrived at Kushiro airport on the 14 Feb. Temperature at 0ºC. I thought that it was so bad, but it turned out to be the beginning of a freezing journey.
The trip started with Animal Planet LIVE, for 3 days we experienced the Stellar's Sea Eagles and the White-Tailed Eagles at 2 locations (Lake Furen and the icy waters off Shiretoko Peninsula). At -20ºC, heat pads were useless. My fingers were frozen until they got numb!
The beautiful sunrise at Lake Kussharo with the Whooper Swans was breathtaking. An amazing airshow display by the iced lake at -17ºC. Strangely it was too cold for my two D700 cameras as my shutter froze simultaneously. Luckily I still had my 7D that worked. The Red Crowned Crane were difficult to shoot against the white snow. Akan International Crane Center had estimated 80 photographers waiting at the 2pm feeding. The sneaky Red Fox strolled in to steal fish was quite cute. Later, as it started to snow, it added a nice touch to the pictures. Saw some dancing cranes at Tsurumidai. The sunrise at Otowa-bashi Bridge was slightly overcast but a pleasant sight to see the cranes roosting in the water at a distance. I shot a picture at 420mm with my 7D.
From Nemuro to Rausu, we saw many Shika Deers. The males were always alone.
In Nemuro, we had a lucky Squirrel sighting. It was so quick - a blink and it disappeared.
One day just before sunset on the way back, we spotted the elusive Ural Owl. It was practically posing for us. It was great! That certainly made our day!
After 7 days in Hokkaido, we travelled to Nagano for 2 days to photograph the Snow Monkeys at Jigokudani Yaen-Koen. Although there were many tourists, we took our time to catch the best shots.
A truly well planned trip. Loved the cold. Loved the sushi. The only thing I hated was the heavy gear we had to carry around. Nonetheless, it was worth the trouble.
After experiencing a safari in Kenya and this winter wildlife, I'm hungry for more wildlife adventure. Next I wish to do the Northern Lights.
