Canoeing the St. John's River to Ancient Florida Indian Mounds
A canoe trip on the St. John's River in Central Florida. This river was inhabited by various groups of Native Americans throughout the ages. This section of the river was likely inhabited by Indians in association with the Mayaca and Ais Indians. After 1700 the Seminole Indians inhabited this area and used and added to the mounds originally inhabited by earlier tribes. The St. John's river is Florida's largest river and stretches over 300 miles starting in South Florida near Blue Cypress Preserve and dumping out into the Atlantic Ocean in Jacksonville. The St. John's River flows South to North rather than North to South as most rivers. There are numerous rivers that feed the St. John's that also follow a South to North pattern. The Indians that originally lived along the St. John's River went into extinction. The later Seminoles Indians were pushed further south because of conflict with American settlers and war with the United States Army.

Salt springs
Another one of our adventures led us to salt springs, this was our first visit and definitely wont be our last. I brought my best friend and her family along for the adventure and it was perfect! The weather was perfect and water was amazing. The water wasn't as salty as youd think either. It was refreshing...
The music is by stick figure.

Random information about salt springs I found on google:
Salt Springs Recreation Area is one of the recreational jewels of the Ocala National Forest. The recreation area is located in the lush, semi-tropical setting of central Florida. Within the recreation area is a natural spring rising from vertical fissures (cracks) from deep within the earth. The presence of potassium, magnesium and sodium salts give the waters in the spring a slight salinity. Hence the name Salt Springs.
Nestled in between lakes Kerr and George in Marion County near Ocala is a somewhat unusual attraction called Salt Springs. The name says it all: in this picturesque pool of roughly 190 by 130 feet, four vents in the limestone floor emit spring crystal clear water with a slight salinity owing to the presence of sodium, magnesium, and potassium salts in the underground passages below.
- FLORIDA
Local History
It has been said that Salt Springs is the legendary Fountain of Youth. . . Scientists have discovered that aging can be slowed by certain minerals and trace elements that are available only in unrefined groundwater, and the abundance and variety of helpful minerals in the water at Salt Springs can be found nowhere else in the United States.
In 1900, Daniel Morgan, a prominent Marion County resident and County Commissioner who also owned a timber and turpentine business, constructed a large framed home on the south side of Lake Kerr. This grand lakeside home contained ten rooms, with the kitchen and dining room separated from the main house, all constructed of heart of pine and trimmed cypress. When Mr. Morgan died accidentally, Columbus Townsend purchased the spacious house as a summer residence for his family, and proceeded to have it moved from the bank of Lake Kerr across the landscape to its present location, adjacent to the Springs.
According to Henry Sprinkle, a life-long resident of Salt Springs and grandson of Columbus Townsend, moving the house was quite a feat which took almost a year to complete. It was said that to move the house, they felled large pine trees laying them in front of the house as rollers and, like the Egyptians, pulled the house with teams of oxen and cattle.
In 1908, President Roosevelt set asaide the vast scrubland surrounding the Springs as the Ocala National Forest and only the stouthearted braved the hazards of traveling the long deep sand roads to enjoy the waters of this remote jewel.
In the 1800's
The King of Spain originally granted ownership of the property surrounding the Springs along with the five-mile run to Lake George to his supporters, the Hernandez family, who were not particularly attracted to the gift. Subsequently, the property remained undeveloped until the late 1800's when brothers, Walter and Columbus Townsend, who were prominent gentlemen in the turpentine business, saw an opportunity for shipping turpentine down Salt Springs Run and up the St. Johns River to the Naval Station in Jacksonville.
In the 1900's
In the 1920's, after having bought his brother's interest in the property and having laid claim to the Hernandez grant, Columbus sold all of the property to the Ray family of Ocala. With the coming of hard-top roads, many of Florida's natural treasures were popularized, but not Salt Springs; this remained a remote jewel but word had gotten out. Some came to be cured, believing through folklore that the waters had medicinal value, while others simply wanted to enjoy the bath of crystal clear waters. Regardless of the reason, all manner of homemade shelters sparng up among the oaks to accommodate the special breed of explorer who flocked to the Springs.
In the early 1960's, Highway S-19 opened exposing the Springs to the world. Portions of the scarce provate land nearby was soon subdivided and sold as campsites to those individuals wanting their own slice of the Forest. Over the years, most of those campsites have become permanent home sites, for both full-time residents and weekenders alike.
In 1979, the U.S. Government bought the Springs from the Ray family, along with the approximately ten acres of the Hernandez grant, for over $12 million. Development of the Salt Springs Recreation Area is still ongoing, with the most recent renovations completed in 2009. The old home still stands on the south side of the Springs, and one day may be renovated as a bed & breakfast.
St. Johns River, Jacksonville, Duval County, Florida, United States, North America
The St. Johns River is the longest river in the U.S. state of Florida and its most significant one for commercial and recreational use. At 310 miles (500 km) long, it winds through or borders twelve counties, three of which are the state's largest. The drop in elevation from headwaters to mouth is less than 30 feet (9 m); like most Florida waterways, the St. Johns has a very low flow rate 0.3 mph (0.13 m/s) and is often described as lazy. Popular belief in the St. Johns area holds that it is one of the few rivers that flow north, although north-flowing rivers are common. Numerous lakes are formed by the river or flow into it, but as a river its widest point is nearly 3 miles (5 km) across. The narrowest point is in the headwaters, an unnavigable marsh in Indian River County. The St. Johns drainage basin of 8,840 square miles (22,900 km2) includes some of Florida's major wetlands. It is separated into three major basins and two associated watersheds for Lake George and the Ocklawaha River, all managed by the St. Johns River Water Management District. A variety of people have lived on or near the St. Johns, including Paleo-indians, Archaic people, Timucua, Mocama, French and Spanish settlers, Seminoles, slaves and freemen, Florida crackers, land developers, tourists and retirees. It has been the subject of William Bartram's journals, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings' books, and Harriet Beecher Stowe's letters home. Although Florida was the location of the first permanent European settlement in what would become the United States, it was the last U.S. territory on the east coast to be developed; it remained an undeveloped frontier into the 20th century. When attention was turned to the state, however, much of the land was rapidly overdeveloped in a national zeal for progress. The St. Johns, like many Florida rivers, was altered to make way for agricultural and residential centers. It suffered severe pollution and human interference that has diminished the natural order of life in and around the river. In all, 3.5 million people live within the various watersheds that feed into the St. Johns River. The St. Johns, named one of 14 American Heritage Rivers in 1998, was number 6 on a list of America's Ten Most Endangered Rivers in 2008. Restoration efforts are under way for the basins around the St. Johns as Florida continues to deal with population increases in the river's vicinity.
Florida Riverfront Estate on St Johns River at Switzerland Point
''Old Florida at its best! Located on historic Switzerland Point, the 3,808 square-foot residence overlooks the broad expanse of the St. Johns River at a point where it is several miles wide. Spectacular sunsets… Boating… Fishing… Shrimping… and Manatee watching. The home has been well-maintained and updated regularly with gorgeous new kitchen and three car garage. Enter the home through a gracious Foyer into a large yet comfortable Great Room with a center fireplace surrounded (above and on both sides) by 20 foot tall glass windows framing the view of the river and pool. The spacious kitchen features an eating area overlooking the pool with a fireplace tucked into the corner, making the kitchen a warm and comfortable place to gather.
Adjacent to the Kitchen is a spacious and bright Dining Room. The first floor also offers that sought-after first floor guest suite overlooking the river.
The Master Suite and three upstairs bedrooms all feature large balconies overlooking the deep swimming pool and the St. Johns River. With a total of five bedrooms and three and a half baths, this well laid out Riverfront Residence provides both drama and comfort. In fact every room except the dining room faces the riverfront.
This gracious Old Florida property is home to the several hundred-year-old Switzerland Magnolia, yet you can see the tops of the Jacksonville skyscrapers from your dock at night. Located less than 10 miles from the Interstate Beltway (I-295) circling the City of Jacksonville, you can enjoy the privacy of your estate with river breezes and expansive views, but then quickly enjoy the benefits of a nearby million person city with an international airport, or walk the streets and shops of the Ancient City, St. Augustine, just a short distance to the south. Square footage to be verified by buyer.
As a historic note to the listing, the Switzerland Magnolia is on this property at Switzerland Point. This is the likely location of Fatio's grand home on his 10,000 acre Plantation from a 1772 British land grant. With 4,000 orange trees this plantation prospered until the Seminole Wars in the mid-nineteenth century. For well over a hundred years after that, this spot was a favorite destination by boat for a picnic where you could easily pick out the Switzerland Magnolia which rose above all others.Often when the current homeowners place a spade in the ground, they find 18th Century creamware or a Spanish olive jar.

De Leon Springs State Park Home Movie
Footage of DeLeon Springs, Florida, donated by Lois Jackson. The footage shows wildlife and waterskiing at De Leon Springs State Park, located at 601 Ponce Deleon Boulevard. The film also shows footage of a visit to The Oldest Sugar Mill in America and scuba diving in the springs.
Present-day DeLeon Springs was first inhabited as early as 8000 B.C.E. by local indigenous tribes. Spanish explorers, including possibly Juan Ponce de León (1474-1521), passed through the area during the 16th century. In 1783, the Spanish returned to establish the Spring Garden plantation, where corn, cotton, and sugar cane were grown. The Seminole tribe also began to settle in the area around the same time and was able to successfully sack the plantation during the Second Seminole War. General Zachary Taylor (1784-1850) regained the land in 1838. After the United States gained ownership of Florida, Colonel Orlando Rees built a sugar mill and corn mill in DeLeon Springs. However, many of these facilities were destroyed by the Union Army during the American Civil War. Nonetheless, DeLeon Springs became a popular tourist destination beginning in the 1880s, mostly due to its advertisement as a fountain of youth.
