Shaw Vineyard Estate - Canberra Region
After searching for a location that offered the perfect lifestyle and a great place to raise their kids, Graeme and Ann Shaw purchased 'Olleyville' to plant the vineyard in 1998.
A year later, they planted 85 acres of grape vines, and became a grape-grower for Australia’s then-largest wine company. In the years that followed, Shaw Vineyard Estate began producing its own range of premium cool climate wines, winning an array of national and international awards for excellence.
The family business now employs their son, daughter and son-in-law, and a number of local staff. Graeme says their number one preference is to stay local, and use local suppliers wherever possible.
Shaw Vineyard Estate is a half hour drive to Canberra, and enjoys easy access to the vibrant Canberra restaurant scene. Graeme says that the Canberra region is gaining a worldwide reputation for quality grapes, with Canberra region wines now found throughout Canberra and Sydney. The business also exports wines to China, Singapore, Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand.
Of living in the Yass Valley, Graeme says that they love being able to use Canberra’s facilities, while living in the country. “Canberra is a half hour drive. We can get to the snow or beach within an hour and a half. And, we’re in a great country area for a great country lifestyle!”

Farming With Salty Water Is Possible
One of the many adverse effects of global climate change is the rise of sea levels, which scientists say can increase the salinity level of fresh water reserves. As saline water cannot be used for irrigation, farm fields close to the seashore are lost to agriculture. But a farm in Netherlands has managed to grow healthy and tasty vegetables in soil irrigated with salt water. VOA’s George Putic reports.

Let Momma Dig a Hutch
I took the moms on a bottle digging adventure today in the muddy bottom of a lake. She was hoping to metal detect some silver coins or gold rings, but instead she found lots and lots of Hutchinson soda bottles. We didn't find anything new for the collection, but it was a beautiful day for digging in the dirt.

Create an Adventure with Copyright
On Wednesday, July 31, the Copyright Office will present “Create an Adventure with Copyright,” celebrating the way copyright inspires adventure and how adventure promotes copyright. While copyright might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about taking an adventure, copyright and adventure actually go hand in hand. Have you seen a photograph of a beautiful location and then gone on your own adventure there? Or have you written a song about an incredible place you have visited? The event celebrates the role copyright plays in inspiring adventure and how adventure promotes copyright, with a focus on the impact copyright has on photographs, travel books, music, TV shows, and movies.

Egypt’s Old Kingdom: The Latest Discoveries at Abusir South
Miroslav Bárta, Professor, Czech Institute of Egyptology
Abusir, the “Place of Osiris,” is a necropolis (burial site) near the Old Kingdom’s city of Memphis, known for its pyramids and sun temples. In this lecture, Miroslav Bárta will provide a comprehensive look at the latest archaeological discoveries at Abusir, dating from different periods of the Old Kingdom (2700–2200 BCE). These individual discoveries shed new light on general processes that led to the rise and eventual decline of the Old Kingdom, the first territorial state in human history.

Webinar - Farmland Protection Policy Act (9/2013)
For nearly two decades, the Farmland Protection Policy Act or FPPA has guided Federal agencies in minimizing the impact of federally funded projects that involve the permanent conversion of prime, unique or important farmlands to nonagricultural uses. Under the FPPA, the NRCS is assigned specific responsibilities to facilitate compliance and maintain appropriate records. This webinar was designed for state and local FPPA contacts within NRCS. It will provide a primer on FPPA as well as an opportunity for state FPPA contacts to learn more about the Land Evaluation and Site Assessment (LESA) procedure and other FPPA-related topics not covered in detail in the FPPA manual. The webinar also provides a comprehensive discussion of the different impact rating forms used by NRCS to evaluate federally funded projects converting farmlands to nonagricultural uses.

Catching Tiny Fish With Tiny Rods
Every fisherman today has a big fish story, but in ancient Japan, the tiniest fish was the biggest catch. Tanago fishing is a Japanese tradition dating back to samurai over 200 years ago. A tanago fish can be as small as the nail of a pinky finger; in order to catch one, a fisherman must have a hook, bait, and a very special fishing rod called Edo Wazao, handmade from natural bamboo. Twin brothers Toryo and Shuhei Tosaku are the 8th generation of their family to keep up the precious craft of Edo Wazao. With less than ten skilled craftsmen left, the brothers are hoping carry on the legacy of their ancestors.
