Esperance - Out Of The Way
Welcome to the Esperance -- it's Out of the way, out of this world!!
Esperance, roughly translated, is French for hope and it was the French that are credited with the town's discovery, naming it and other local landmarks whilst sheltering from a storm in this area in 1792.
Ten years on Matthew Flinders sailed the glorious waters of the Bay of Isles, discovering and naming gems such as Lucky Bay and Thistle Cove.
Whalers, sealers and pirates followed, as did pastoralists and miners, keen to cash in on free land and a gold boom to the north at Kalgoorlie.
Today's population of this delightful town is over 14,000, tourism, agriculture and fishing steer the economy of this stunning coastal community.
The Australian Traveller Magazine judged Esperance on March 25th, 2009 the most beautiful Town in Western Australia and the second most beautiful in the whole of Australia.
How to get there? Well!
First a flight to Western Australia's capital city Perth, then, from Perth a short 1.5hr flight to Esperance or a 721km country drive, through the wheat belt via Wagin and Lake Grace.
Allow a few days for your stay. A week or more is recommended to see most attractions including the most beautiful scenery and some of the whitest beaches in Australia. However it will take a lot longer to see all that is on offer in the region.
The best times to visit are between July/September, when you have the best chances to see some Whales and the beginning of Wildflower season.
Ok, let's imagine that you're in Esperance. To ensure that you have a better experience; your first stop should be at the Esperance Visitor Centre, where the staff will happily assist you.
There are loads of things to see and do here. Self-drive or organised tours will take you out to Cape Le Grand National Park and the Great Ocean Drive, where you'll find the most beautiful beaches.
On the way to the National Park you can visit the Esperance Stonehenge; just outside of town you can go for a walk in the nature reserves, visit the Bird and Animal Park and the Dalyup River Winery.
And right in town we have the unique Mermaid Leather display and the Municipal Museum. Various art galleries can be found in and around Esperance too. And while on the coast, make sure you ask about the cruises to take you out to the islands of the Recherché Archipelago.
Lake King Nov 2008 WA Western Australia with Carol Grist
Lake King is five and a half hours' drive east of Perth. The town is a stopping place for visitors travelling across arid country and through Frank Hann National Park to Norseman. It is a crossroads centre with a tavern and several stores. DON PUGH CARAVAN TRIP 2008
In season the surrounding countryside puts on a wonderful display of colourful wildflowers. Visit the Lake King saltwater lake, picnic at the Mount Madden Cairn and Lookout, or visit a yabby (small freshwater rock lobster) farm.
The Frank Hann National Park is located 25 kilometres to the east of town and offers a good representation of the heath flora of inland sand plains. Lake King offers bed and breakfasts, hotel/motel accommodation and a caravan park. DON PUGH CARAVAN TRIP 2008
Esperance Town
How to get there? Well! First a flight to Western Australias capital city Perth, then, from Perth a short 1.5hr flight to Esperance or a 721km country drive, through the wheat belt via Wagin and Lake Grace. Esperance is located 500kms east from the City of Albany and 400kms south from the City of Kalgoorlie/Boulder.
Allow a few days to stay, a week or more is recommended to see most attractions and the most beautiful scenery, including the whitest beaches in Australia; however it will take a lot longer to see all that is on offer in the region. Anytime is a good time to come and visit. From mid-June to mid-October you may see whales, usually the Southern Right Whales. Also at this time the wildflowers come out and can be seen in the National Parks, Helms Arboretum and the various nature reserves. In the summer you can spend your days at the beach, and even if its a busy time in Esperance you will always find a quiet spot. From around March to May the weather is absolutely gorgeous! Ok, now that youre in Esperance, to ensure that you have a better experience your first stop should be at the Esperance Visitor Centre, where the staff will assist you when you arrive. They speak fluent holidays! Esperance is an amazing place to live; it has shops to suit all needs and you can also find a range of exclusive locally made products, some not produced anywhere else in the world. The Town has a large variety of shops, such as supermarkets, Clothing, Hardware, Restaurants and fast foods; and services like Schools and university, car repairs, and so many more. Tanker Jetty is a timber jetty curving out into the Esperance Bay of about 670m in length. It was built in 1935 to serve the shipping needs of the Esperance region and townsite. Its a rare example of substantially intact jetty on the coast of WA. It is no longer in use as a facility for transportation or cargo, but is now used for recreation. If youre interested in diving, the artificial reef attracts a variety of fish species. For most of the time, Sammy the Seal will be at the Tanker Jetty waiting for you to come and say hello.

Ancient Lake in Antarctica Reached!
Hank gets to the bottom of an exciting, and kinda weird, announcement from Russian scientists at the Vostok Research Station in Antarctica. Have they reached a 20-million-year old underground lake? Maybe! Is there a hoard of Nazi secrets down there too? No!
**EDIT** Confirmation of reaching the lake came this morning! For more check out the article from the New York Times:

Kiss The Sky Webisode 3 || Stephanie Lake
Kiss The Sky premieres on 29 June-1 July, 2017 at the Bruce Mason Centre.
Book your tickets here:
Our third and final choreographer is the sensational Stephanie Lake, who came over from Australia to set her work 'If Never Was Now' on the company. We are buzzing because it's also the first time Stephanie's work will be seen in New Zealand! The piece is a surreal hive of activity reflecting the beauty and brutality of the natural world. The dancers were challenged and pushed to their physical extremes, and we really can't wait for you to be blown away!

The National Ballet of Canada: Forsythe, Kylián, and Ratmansky (Jan. 28 & 29) / The Sleeping Beauty (Jan. 30–Feb. 2)
with the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra

The Sleeping Beauty (Jan. 30–Feb. 2)
Of all the story ballets, perhaps none embodies classical ballet’s unabashed exuberance, grace, and virtuosity more than this romantic tale of a princess cursed to sleep for 100 years, who can only be awakened by a prince’s kiss. A colorful pageant danced to Tchaikovsky’s gorgeous music, this production helped put The National Ballet of Canada on the international map when Nureyev brought it to the company in 1972 and chose current Artistic Director Karen Kain—then a principal dancer—for the title role. She has staged the production keeping Nureyev’s vision intact; his is considered one of the most richly entertaining and technically impressive versions there is.
Works by Forsythe, Kylián, and Ratmansky (Jan. 28 & 29)
For the first two evenings of its Kennedy Center engagement, the company performs William Forsythe’s fiercely demanding The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude danced to the final movement of Schubert’s Ninth Symphony and his more subdued Approximate Sonata 2016 set to a minimalist piano score by Thom Willems; Jiří Kylián’s Petite Mort, a poetic expression of ecstasy performed to selections from two Mozart piano concertos; and Alexei Ratmansky’s Piano Concerto #1, an homage to composer Shostakovich’s life and his transcendent spirit of creation.
Join a pre-performance talk Jan. 28 & 29 beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the theater, free with your performance ticket.
Dancers, choreographers, composers, creative team members, and/or other artists offer insight into the performance and a chance to ask questions!
