Sebring (/ˈsiːbrɪŋ/ see-bring) is a city in Highlands County, Florida, United States, nicknamed The City on the Circle, in reference to Circle Drive, the center of the Sebring Downtown Historic District.[6] In 2010, the United States Census Bureau reported a population of 10,491. It is the county seat of Highlands County, and is the principal city of the Sebring Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Sebring is the home of the Sebring International Raceway, created on a former airbase, first used in 1950. It hosted the 1959 Formula One United States Grand Prix, but is currently best known as the host of the 12 Hours of Sebring, an annual TUDOR United SportsCar Championship race. Nearby Highlands Hammock State Park is a popular attraction. Additionally, the house where novelist Rex Beach committed suicide is located on one of Sebring's main lakes, Lake Jackson.

Lake Placid, which was formerly called Lake Stearns, was chartered on December 1, 1925. Dr. Melvil Dewey, the inventor of the Dewey Decimal System, and the founder of the Lake Placid Club in Lake Placid, New York, proposed that Lake Stearns change its name to Lake Placid. On April 29, 1927, the Lake Stearns Commissioners accepted Dr. Dewey's proposal. Subsequently, they submitted a request to the Florida State Legislature. On June 6, 1927, the community was chartered as the town of Lake Placid.

1988 Sebring Sinkhole Aftermath Video 072614
I know many of you are interested in the natural features of Florida...and Florida has plenty of limestone. Limestone is not the most stable of materials...it has a tendency to dissolve and is particularly vulnerable when drought or heavy rains change the level of the water table. Geologists had been here to determine how likely a sinkhole would be in the Sebring area (north of Lake Okechobee, equidistant from both the Atlantic and the Gulf). They reported that sinkholes would be highly unlikely here...but this one shows that even the best guesstimates can be wrong. Two homes were lost, more damaged...and this is what it looks like 26 years later. You might not recognize what had happened here if you weren't aware of the story.

This is a video of one of the Lake Placid (FL) tornadoes that hit this past Sunday (6/24/12); this was the one on the South East corner of Lake Istokpoga. Here you can see the view of it from my front yard as it makes its way across the North West corner of Lykes property, across CR 621, through the treeline on the lake (effortlessly snapping off very huge, very old cypress trees), and goes on across the lake.
