Hokitika - Lake Kaniere - West Coast, New Zealand
Lake Kaniere at Hokitika, West Coast, New Zealand is 19km from Hokitika. It is a popular spot for picnicking, water skiing, kayaking, fishing, walking and mountain biking. Visit the Hokitika Gorge, Dorothy Falls and Lake Kaniere for a wonderful scenic driving loop.
Arguably one of the countries most beautiful lakes, it is located in the Lake Kaniere scenic reserve surrounded on three sides by mountains that are capped in snow during winter. There are a number of picnic sites and short walks available.
The lake has clear water and a sandy bottom so is a favourite for swimmers in summer. For a more invigorating experience the brave can take a plunge into the pool below the icy and majestic Dorothy Falls.
There is a campsite which is popular with boaters who enjoy water-skiing and fishing for salmon, perch, rainbow and brown trout. Mountain bikers and walkers will love the 10 km historic water-race track which is suitable for people of average fitness. Along the way you will hear and see a myriad of birds like tui, bellbird and kereru or wood pigeon.
The Lake Kaniere Walkway is another beautiful walk that traverses native bush along the western shore of the lake. The more adventurous and fit can tackle the seven hour return walk to the peak of Mt Tuhua or climb the 1270 metre high Mt Brown to stay in a refurbished historic hut. Your hard work is rewarded by fantastic views of Hokitika, Lake Kaniere and surrounding mountains including Aoraki/Mt Cook.
The West Coast Wilderness Trail passes by Lake Kaniere on its way between Hokitika and Cowboy Paradise at Milltown, making it a great place for a picnic stop.
If walking or biking isn't your thing the scenic drive around the lake gives easy access to Dorothy Falls. Continue driving through rich dairy country to the stunning Hokitika Gorge with its vivid blue water and then return to Hokitika having enjoyed one of the best scenic loops around.

-- About this video --
After a failed attempt to do the West Coast Treetop Walk yesterday in the heavy rain which was damaging our cameras, we are making it back to the West Coast Treetop Walkway to walk through the forest canopy of a classic New Zealand rainforest.
A unique walk in Hokitika and a New Zealand West Coast walk is the treetop walkway. It’s a great place to learn about the native New Zealand forest and get a unique perspective of the place. The Hokitika Treetop Walk is very accessible and is 2.5km long. There’s also a huge tower to climb to get more views over the lakes and out to the Tasman Sea.
We also get the chance to see native New Zealand birds like the fantail and the native wood pigeon called a kereru.
The West Coast Treetop Walkway is located only 10 minutes out of Hokitika along the New Zealand West Coast or South Island West Coast.
So what do you think of the West Coast Treetop Walk? Is it something you are adding to your New Zealand must do list?

Exploring Hokitika - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand
Day 113: Today we are in the New Zealand West Coast town of Hokitika, otherwise known as Jade Country and we’ll show you where to see that amazing Hokitika Sunset!

-- About this video --
Today we are exploring the New Zealand West Coast town of Hokitika! Hokitika is famous for being the Jade Country or having a lot of greenstone or pounamu so our mission today is to get some greenstone pendant inspiration so that we can carve our own greenstone for each other in a couple of days time.
We check out some Hokitika jade stores and Hokitika greenstone stores to find out about the greenstone meanings and see some greenstone carvers at work. Oh yeah, and we also check out Sock World in Hokitika too, which is a Hokitika sock museum.
Once inspired, we head down to Hokitkia Beach where we spend time designing our greenstone pendants for each other until the sun starts to set. Now we get to see that famous Hokitika sunset! This is one of the best places to see the New Zealand sunset!
After a relaxed but cool day in Hokitika, we head back to our hostel, the Mountain Jade Backpackers.
So what do you think of the West Coast town of Hokitika? Would you stop here while travelling the New Zealand South Island? Let us know!
