Qinghai Lake is about 130 kilometers or 80 miles from Xining and is about 3,205 meters or 10,515 feet above sea level. It has become a tourist destination popular for biking and bird watching, the spectacular high-mountain scenery, and the cultural mix of Tibetan, Mongolian, and Muslim people.

Qinghai Lake in northwest China sees vast environmental improvements
Qinghai Lake, in northwest China’s Qinghai Province, covers around 4,400 square kilometers and is China's largest inland salt lake.
Around 500 researchers spent three years investigating the geography, including the landform, ground cover and human geography, of the province.
The results show the vegetation coverage in Qinghai has increased thanks to government efforts to strengthen patrols in every area of the province. The number of wild and rare animals has also increased.

Qinghai 2005 Part 2
This sees the trip arriving in Qinghai, initially in the area around Koko Nor, the huge lake near Xining. We visited the Chaka desert and the Dulan mountains before heading south. Species in this clip are Mongolian lark, Pere Davids/Small snowfinch, Henderson's/Mongolian ground jay, Beautiful rosefinch, White-throated redstart, juvenile Przevalski's/Ala Shan redshart, Tibetan/Long-billed calandra Lark, Robin accentor, White-browed/Stoliczka's tit-warbler, Twite, Tibetan snowfinch and Eastern great/Streaked rosefinch.
Qinghai 2005 Part 1
This is the first part of a video I made of a trip to part of the Tibetan Plateau in Qinghai Province, China. The whole video is an hour long, and this section includes the opening titles and Wulingshan before we flew to Xining. It's mostly birds, other wildlife and views. Qinghai Lake, Tibetan Plateau of China - Do and Don't
青海湖 མཚོ་སྔོན་, མཚོ་ཁྲི་ཤོར་རྒྱལ་མོ་ Qinghai Lake, high on the Qinghai Plateau of Tibet, is a vast expanse of inland salt water. At 3,200 metres (10,500ft) it is the biggest and one of the highest lakes in China.

This is a collection of images from a trip to China's Qinghai Province in late April/early May 2007, set to the song Cool Calm by Kensuke Shiina & Irama Buyung. The trip covered Xining City, Qinghai Lake, Taer Monastery, Tongren Monastery, Xunhua City, Mengda Lake, Wendu Monastery, and Huzhu City. The man at 3:40 is not wearing a hat, rather, his hair is spun into a turban. Qinghai means Turquoise Sea in Chinese; even though this province is located very far from the coast, Qinghai lake is so massive that it resembles a sea horizon, and thus it justifies the moniker. Qinghai has traditionally been a part of ethnographic Tibet, but it also features other unique nationalities, such as the Sala muslims, descendants of Kazakh nomads who settled here 800 years ago, and the Tu people, who were once closely tied to northeastern Mongolian tribes, but have long since settled in the hills north of the Yellow River.

Qinghai (Chinese: 青海; pinyin: Qīnghǎi; Wade–Giles: Ch'ing-Hai; pronounced [tɕʰíŋxàɪ]), also known as Tsinghai, formerly known in English as Kokonor, is a province of the People's Republic of China located in the northwest of the country. As one of the largest province-level administrative divisions of China by area, the province is ranked fourth-largest in size, but has the third-smallest population.
Located mostly on the Qinghai-Tibet plateau, the province has long been a melting pot for a number of ethnic groups including the Han, Tibetans, Hui, Tu, Mongols, and Salars. Qinghai borders Gansu on the northeast, Xinjiang on the northwest, Sichuan on the southeast, and the Tibet Autonomous Region on the southwest. Qinghai province was established in 1928 under the Republic of China period during which it was ruled by Chinese Muslim warlords known as the Ma clique. The Chinese name, Qinghai is named after Qinghai Lake (cyan sea lake), the largest lake in China. The province was known formerly as Kokonur in English, derived from the Oirat name for Qinghai Lake.

The Qinghai Lake (chin.: Qinghai Hu) is the biggest saltwater lake in china (100 km x 60 km). The lake is situated in Qinghai province north-east of tibet on a height of 3.200 m.
China's Largest Inland Lake Experiencing First Ever Incomplete Freezing in Winter
China's largest inland and salt lake Qinghai Lake is experiencing its first ever incomplete freezing in winter, according to researchers of Qinghai Provincial Meteorological Bureau.
According to records of the meteorological bureau, the Qinghai Lake in northwest China usually freezes completely in mid-January. But according to the satellite surveillance images, the lake has not frozen totally yet.
We used drones and inspected at the field in person. The ice near the place where the lake was not frozen totally is about four centimeters thick. In the past, we couldn't see water on the surface of the lake in this period. But this year, we can see water obviously, said Quan Chen, a researcher at the Qinghai Provincial Meteorological Science Research Institution.
Quan said the lake used to be totally frozen over in January to March, and this year's phenomenon might be caused by temperature rise.
From the data collected in December and January, at the Tianjun and Gangcha meteorological stations, two stations in the upper reaches of the Qinghai Lake, we can see that the temperatures were three to four degrees Celsius higher than the same periods in the past. The high temperature may be the major cause for the incomplete freezing of the Qinghai Lake, he said.
