Lake Kournas is a lake on the island of Crete, Greece, near the village of Kournas. It is in the Apokoronas municipality of Chania regional unit close to the border with Rethymno regional unit, 47 km from the town of Chania. Kournas is a fairly large village perched on a hill overlooking the lake.

Crete's only freshwater lake, Lake Kournas, is relatively large, with a perimeter of 3.5 km. Although almost all touristic leaflets say that it is possible to walk around the lake, that is not true. At least not at the end of the rain season (winter). There is a nature preserve on the Southwest of the lake. But there is a rustic road from the North of the lake to the Hills on the West of the lake too.
The lake used to be called 'Korisia' after ancient 'Kourion', a city thought to be in the area with a temple to Athena. The lake reportedly used to be full of eels but now is better known for its terrapins and tourism. Tavernas and pedalo rental shops line part of the shore. Overall, however, the lake retains its beauty, the White Mountains reflected in the mirror-like waters. The width, at the point where the landing stage is built, is about 800 m and the water is of a quality to have caused no ill effects to the writer when he swam across.

Hidden Gem of Crete - Kournas Lake Rethymno Greece
Before leaving Crete we decided to spend our final weekend exploring Rethymno. On the way there we stopped at one of the most beautiful lakes we have ever seen... the hidden gem of Crete, Kournas Lake! From the crystal clear water, to having the entire place to ourselves, the experience was unforgettable.
Visiting Kournas Lake exceeded our expectations, so much that we'd say it's must visit! One of the best things to do in Greece during off season because you will literally have the entire lake to yourself. The lake is located 30 minutes outside the town of Rethymno Crete, and 45 minutes from Chania making Lake Kournas an easy day trip from either town in Greece.
We truly fell in love with Crete and can imagine it would be one of our favorite Greece islands. If you're looking for beaches in Crete, don't disregard the lake. It's equally as stunning as the two beaches we went to and is the only fresh water lake in all of Crete! For things to do in Crete, watch this video and our other Greece vlogs for more ideas.

To get there, drive east from Chania along the main road, turning right at the signpost for Kournas Lake. It will take you less than an hour. There's also a bus from Chania, though it leaves at infrequent intervals.
Kournas Lake has plenty of pedal boats for renting out, in addition to the white shingly beach at the north end. That's also where the tavernas and cafes are for after a bathe.
