Faroe Islands: Riding The Lakes Over The Ocean
Turquoise water, coconuts and palmtrees's are trending. People flocking to paradise to full their instagram feeds with smoothy breakfast bowls and bikini shots... Well, one thing was sure.. we wanted none of that!
The idea came about in Cape Town over summer, everyone was booking their tickets to Bali, Tarifa, Cabarete.. Don't get me wrong, spending a week in boardies and a Bintang tank top is tempting, but we wanted something new, something real, something to remember...
So we rounded up a crew. Myself, Nick Jacobsen, my brother Craig Howes and 3 of our mates/videographers/photographers Jop Heemskerk, Dean Cothill and Shawn Ogulu.
Destination: Faroe Islands.. If you haven't heard of the Faroe Islands, don't worry neither had I. 18 Volcanic Islands, Tucked between Iceland and Norway in the North Atlantic Ocean, cold, wet and very far from Cape Town
What I did know about it, was the images I had seen of the 'floating' lake above the ocean. surrounded by some 2000ft high sea cliffs and waterfalls.
Our mission: to kiteboard above the ocean, and everywhere and anywhere else possible.

Leitisvatn Lake and Bøsdalafossur Waterfall in the Faroe Islands - Aerial Tour
Leitisvatn (or Sørvágsvatn) is the largest lake in the Faroe Islands. It was used during World War II by the British army as a runway to land seaplanes. An optical illusion along the cliffs, at times, makes this lake appear as though it is suspended above the ocean with a perspective that would make M.C. Escher smile. Sørvágsvatn has a waterfall named Bøsdalafossur, which crashes 30 metres down a cliff directly into the Atlantic Ocean.

This country is in the middle of the Atlantic sea but with amazing natural view.
The Faroese live peacefully here and you are welcome to visite them and feel the paradise on the planet.
Sørvágsvatn or Leitisvatn is the largest lake in the Faroe Islands. It is situated on the island of Vágar between the municipalities of Sørvágur and Vágar. Its area is 3.4 km2, more than three times the size of Fjallavatn, the second largest lake, also located on Vágar.
The lake is located very close to the ocean, but its surface is about 40 metres above the level of sea. It is surrounded by a higher cliff which prevents it from emptying fully into the ocean, the waterfall Bøsdalafossur being the outlet. The greater height of the cliffs on either side of Bøsdalafossur can give the illusion from certain perspectives that the lake is higher above sea level than it is.
Faroe Islands - Lake Leitisvatn on a windy day
This is a short video of Lake Leitisvatn (the largest lake in the Faroe Islands), on a windy day. The lake is located on Vagar island, close to the town of Midvagur, and also close to vagar airport, and the town of Vatnsoyrar.

Lake Sørvágsvatn in Vágar island
Lake Sørvágsvatn in Vágar island
Lake Sørvágsvatn or lake Leitisvatn, located on the island of Vágar, the biggest lake of of the Faroe Islands. Faroe Island is situated in center the ocean of Norway and Iceland. Vágar island is the most impressive in size throughout the Faroe archipelago. As for the body of water, it is just by the ocean on a separate platform on height of 30 meters. Significant elevation changes in the are, creating the impression that the lake is literally hanging over the sea. The steep cliffs of water flows out of the lake into the ocean, forming a waterfall of the same name. The lake size in 3.4 square kilometers, more than three times the size of the second biggest lake Fajallavatn, which also lies on the island of Vágar.
In fact, in the world there are so many similar reservoirs. the lake has two names because it is located near the tow village, village Miðvágur called lake Letisvatn because the land near the lake they call Leite, and the village Sørvágur, which is just closed from the lake requires that the name of the lake was in honor of their village, because it is based Midvagsa much earlier. The locals mostly calling it the lake Vatni.
There lake another side name — Hanging lake it is because of the fact that its water surface comes close to the ocean a if hanging over it. the lake is situated in a deep depression, and its towering headland on the 252 and 376 meters on the left and right sides. And when you look form a distance, the cavity itself is not visible, and it seems that the lake is on the platform. Optical illusion creates in impression that the reservoirs is located at the height of not less than one hundred meters above sea level! In fact elevation difference between the lake and the ocean is about 30 meters. When viewed from afar, its seem that lake is tilted towards the ocean, breaking all the laws of physics. Lake on the edge of the Cliff - Sorvagsvatn or leytisvatn, Faore Island. During the II world ware the British army built the airfield and a station for seaplanes on the lake. The first aircraft landed at RAF Sorvagsvatne in 1941.

Mulafossur Waterfall in the Faroe Islands - Aerial Tour
Take a journey into the magical world of the Faroe Islands. Gásadalur, a town with less than 20 residents, is nestled in between the highest mountains on the island of Vágar. It is connected to the rest of the islands by a narrow tunnel that stretches almost two kilometres through the depths of the mountain. However, one of the most striking features is Mulafossur waterfall which plunges from the edge of a cliff into the ocean below. Legend says that a rock in Gásadalur is occupied by dwarfs so be sure to keep a sharp eye for the unexpected.

Faroe islands - Lake Sorvagsvatn
My first day in the Faroe islands started with this beautiful hike down lake Sørvágsvatn on the island of Vagar.
Practical information:
1. In order to reach the trailhead leave the main road at the Midvagur church and follow the signs until you see a gate to your right.
2. It's an easy hike, suitable for children. Most written information mentions it should take 2 hours, I will plan for 3 (if you want to enjoy, explore and climb some peaks)

I had a breathtaking view of nature as a place to enjoy a little more slowly. So at the end of two hours trekking, we met largest lake, Sheba Suggs Barton in the Faroe Islands. Sheba Suggs Barton is famous floating over the cliff into the lake. The water of the lake over the sheer cliff about 30m below the sea, head to the North Atlantic. Waves created by a cliff, strong stream of water flowing toward the ocean. I lost the front of a magnificent natural speechless. The most wonderful waterfall in Faroe Islands. Beyond the waterfall is the North Atlantic. The receptionist led me higher up the cliff. Faroe Islands goes beyond the cliffs of up to 800m. The only difference olratji breath chin all the way, followed gratefully back. Or because now I have not seen this superb. This way we are looking at the south-west. In winter, bring a large wave pushed from the southwest. Waves hitting the cliffs, 4,50m in height enter drove over the cliff a large stone and rock to the border of the lake. I stayed for a while in front of the lake. The sound of the waves crashing waterfall falling into the sea cliffs to the sound. The mystic chords of that nature wanted to brew contains full breasts.
