Hokitika - Lake Mahinapua V2- West Coast, New Zealand

Tranquil Lake Mahinapua is set just 10km south of Hokitika on the West Coast of the Southern Alps, New Zealand. It is a scenic reserve and with a roomy DOC campsite and picnic areas, it is a great place to spend an afternoon or a few days.
Once a coastal lagoon, it is a lovely place for a swim and the water is surprisingly warm. Kids love jumping off the jetty into the lake or launching a canoe to explore. Fishing is best done from a boat, with perch and brown trout plentiful.
While you are likely to see a lovely sunset from Mahinapua the campers says the sight of the sun rising up over the Southern Alps, with its fingers of light touching the lake is something you'll never forget.
Bird spotters are likely to see black swans and grey and mallard ducks. In season you could also spot a magnificent white heron, or if you are lucky the rare fern bird.
There are a number of short walks including the Jon Michel and Bellbird trails which are very accessible for children and strollers. The two hour Mahinapua Walkway which traverses board-walked wetlands and forest, follows an old logging tramway and makes up part of the easy-cycling West Coast Wilderness Trail.
The West Coast Treetop Walk is situated on the south-easthern shore of Lake Mahinapua. It offers a birds eye view of the lush forest, suspended 25 metres above the forest floor and it's tower looks out over Lake Mahinapua to the Tasman Sea to the west and the Southern Alps to the east.

Lake Mahinapua is a shallow lake on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. It is about 10 kilometres (6 mi) south of Hokitika and near the small town of Ruatapu. It was formerly a coastal lagoon, but the buildup of coastal dunes made it an inland lake roughly 500 metres (1,600 ft) from the Tasman Sea coastline.

Driving to Lake Mahinapua | West Coast, New Zealand
Hi travellers,
I drove a little bit out of Hokitika on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand and found this gorgeous lake. It is a nice place to picnic, swim or camp.
It could be an alternative for you to stay whilst in Hokitika. The camp ground had bbq, and toilet facilities.
I was there by myself, not a single other visitor in the middle of the day. It is on the way to Fox or Franz Josef glacier after leaving Hokitika, heading down the coast.
Tip: Pack a picnic lunch, there are so many lovely spots

Hokitika is a 'must-stay' destination on the West Coast, South Island, New Zealand.
Think of those fun-filled, relaxed holidays you used to have - then throw in better coffee, a wild beach, awesome sunsets, mountain views, and great cafes and galleries. You’ll find genuine experiences and friendly characters that love to share a story.
There is easy access to untamed natural wilderness too with the famous Hokitika Gorge, two serene lakes, the West Coast Wilderness Trail and a range of nature walks nearby. The Glaciers and Pancake Rocks are just day trips away.
Don’t rush! It’s common to hear “I wish we had stayed in Hokitika longer. There is so much to see and do.” So stay awhile to enjoy the slower pace of life, have a chat and soak in the view with us.
BEACH TOWN
Even the most amateur of photographers can get that perfect shot if they head to the ocean, just a few minutes walk from town. By day you can see New Zealand’s highest mountain, the magnificent Aoraki / Mt Cook from the beach. As evening comes, head to Sunset Point to see the fiery orange sun sinking into the Tasman Sea.
If you visit in summer you are likely to come across incredible driftwood sculptures, built as part of the annual Driftwood & Sand Beach Sculpture Festival. The works of art are left standing for visitors to enjoy until the sea slowly reclaims them. And no trip to Hokitika is complete without a picture of the iconic beachside, driftwood Hokitika sign.
During whitebaiting season from September to November, watch the locals fish with nets for the tiny delicacy at the nearby river mouth. Or try your hand fishing for kahawai or sea run trout.
Whatever the time of year, enjoy the view over a drink or take a walk along the beach, perhaps stumbling upon a seal basking in the sun. Children will love scouring the beach for pieces of pounamu (NZ Jade) that have been washed down from a nearby river.
ARTISAN COMMUNITY
Hokitika and its surrounding areas, especially the Arahura River, is a major source of pounamu. Also known as greenstone or jade, pounamu was prized by Maori as a great taonga or treasure, and used to make weapons, tools and jewellery.
These days you can watch world-renowned carvers at work in their studios and chat to them about the stone and their designs. For the more adventurous you can even carve a piece yourself.
The carvers are part of a large artisan community which includes photographers, painters,, glass blowers, sculptors, wood turners, jewellers, craftspeople, potters, and metal, stone and textile artists. They are happy for you to visit their studios.
RICH CULTURE
At the height of the gold rushes in the 1860’s Hokitika was a bustling town that welcomed 37,000 immigrants through its port in just two years. Today the town embraces its history and a visit to the excellent Carnegie Building for stories of the gold rushes, pounamu, pioneering life and whitebait is a must.
A self-guided Points of Interest Loop is also an option, along the way view images of yesteryear on your mobile phone using augmented reality. The 11km ramble around town is one of many easy walks, as night falls make sure you head to the glowworm dell – a magical spot for both children and adults.
DINING OPTIONS
Whether you enjoy fish and chips at the beach, or head to one of the many cafes, pubs or restaurants there are plenty of culinary options. In whitebait season you can try whitebait fritters or even a whitebait pizza. Finish your night with a drink at the wine bar or one of the many pubs where you are bound to meet a Coaster who is happy to yarn the evening away.

Hokitika - History and Heritage V2 - West Coast, New Zealand

To say Hokitika, on the West Coast of New Zealand, has a colourful history and heritage is a bit of an understatement. At the height of the gold rushes in the 1860's it boasted 102 hotels, 84 of these crammed into Revell Street on what was known as the Crooked Mile. Throw in three opera houses and it must have been a rip-roaring place for the Irish, Americans, Chinese, British and Europeans who flocked here.
Fueled by gold fever Hokitika grew at an astonishing rate. A self-guided heritage walk around town takes in the most memorable sites.
History and heritage have now gone high tech and visitors can use augmented reality to view historic images on their mobile phones. Another option is to join one of the Coast's most interesting characters, Premier Richard John Seddon, for a guided tour around Hokitika's heritage hot spots.
The hills and streams surrounding Hokitika still hold gold and you can try your luck panning at the historic goldfields of Ross and Goldsborough. Both are official public fossicking areas and gold pans can be bought cheaply in town.
Before the gold rushes, Maori came to Hokitika in search of pounamu, New Zealand's own precious jade. It was highly prized and used for weapons, tools and personal ornaments.
Nearly half of all immigrants to New Zealand in 1866 came through Hokitika's river port although the constantly changing river bar and heavy surf claimed many with 43 vessels coming to grief. Many were buried at Hokitika's Cemetery. You can wander around the graves, which date back to 1865, to get a feel for how tough life was back then.
It is also a little known fact that Hokitika's airport was the home of New Zealand's first licensed air service, Air Travel (NZ) Ltd, which operated from 1934 until 1947. A replica of a Fox Moth biplane (ZD-ADI) can be found at the airport in memory of those pioneering aviators.
Back to earth, on many of the bush walks near Hokitika, especially in the Goldsborough and Blue Spur areas, you can still see authentic relics from the gold years including water races and tunnels.
If you are interested in the areas logging history try the Mahinapua Walkway which follows an old logging tramway and has fascinating interpretive panels along the way.

Lake Mahinapua is a tranquil lake 10kms south of Hokitika, New Zealand. We stayed in the DOC campground. It was a calm morning so I sent the Phantom up for a few shots.
