Kia ora. Our family explored some of the Lord of the Rings' location and enjoyed the cold summer weather of the South Island, New Zealand in January of 2017.

So much to enjoy with natural world heritage of this lake part of larger area of the national park. The Nature of this area is so unique and special.

Lake Manapouri is located in the South Island of New Zealand. The lake is situated within the Fiordland National Park and the wider region of Te Wahipounamu South West New Zealand World Heritage Area.

Lake Manapouri was formed by glacial action in the most recent ice age.

New Zealand - Drive to Anau - South Island

From Queenstown head south along Lake Wakatipu to Kingston. Be sure to stop in Kingston to see the famous Kingston Flyer steam engine and train. From Kingston continue south to Lumsden then west to Anau. This is a beautiful drive, so take your time and enjoy the views. If you have time drive down to Manapouri. You could easily spend a week in this area and drive up to Milford Sound.
