Outback Trip to MUNGO NATIONAL PARK - New South Wales
Mungo National Park is located just over 1000kms west of Sydney. It would take approximately 13,5 hours to get there by car. The last 60kms of the trip will be on dirt road. Access to the park may be closed in the wet season.
The closest town is Pooncarie, 81kms away. There will be no phone reception in the area. If you plan to go there, make sure to have enough water, good spare tyre(s) and a reliable vehicle. A 4WD is recommended due to the corrugation, although a reliable hatchback could also get you there.
There are 2 campsites in the area. But if you prefer a little bit of luxury, there's a very limited small cabins with air con near the Visitor Centre.
This site is full of historical value. Lake Mungo, which shown as a large lake on the map, is no longer have any water. In fact, it has dried since 40,000 years ago.
There's a 70kms loop track around the Lake Mungo that will bring you across to some viewing platforms to the Walls of China.
This is a perfect spot for those who'd like to experience Australian Outback, like nowhere else in the world.
For photographer like myself, this spot is a true photographer's heaven. The Walls of China, the outback scenery, the wildlifes, the open skies for astrophotography, you name it!
If you'd like to see Australia other than the beaches and the bush, I will highly recommend a visit to this corner of New South Wales.
And if you do go ... please Keep Australia Clean!!!

Pooncarie LakeMungo Highlights HD May 2012
May 2012 - trip from Loxton to Pooncarie, then a day trip to Lake Mungo, did the loop road, and back to Renmark over the north side of the Murray. Passed though Murray Sunset NP on both outward bound and home legs.
Lake Mungo - Timelapse
45 minutes - lapsed to 10 minutes::
Go to 6.29m to where we launched into the air at 100km. We flew to a metre high!!
Most of the gear in the back ended up in the front, luggage net is the next purchase.
Video depicts the road conditions from the Pooncarie-Wentworth road turnoff along the Top Hut Road heading to Lake Mungo National Park.
AN average sedan would be suitable to traverse the road.
The are a few very rough sections that would be prudent to slow to 20kmh but for the most part you could safely travel between 60-100kmh.
The track to Lake Mungo is 65km of dirt.
No Mobile coverage anywhere within the area so make sure your vehicle is well maintained.
You will need to carry plenty of water as there are no facilities and no fuel.
I took in 30 litres of water for two people for two days.
If you plan to go for the tourist lap around Lake Mungo, you will need to make sure that you have at least 350km range of fuel left when you turn off onto Top Hut road to get you back to say Wentworth for example to the south.
Pooncarie has fuel and is 80km from the junction of Top Hut road + Pooncarie-Wentworh Road heading north.
We came from Wentworth (from the south) and filled up there which gave me more than enough fuel (around 1000km range on my 98 ltr tank).
I had a proper hand held GPS and also used the Hema map app. The average city GPS will not cover the area and get you lost.
My BMW X5 4.4i handled the conditions with no issues.
Cheers Gaz

Wentworth a best kept secret in NSW, Australia
The best kept secret in New South Wales is Wentworth, just near Mildura. Stay close to the town and beautiful Darling River, wildlife is prolific and so much to see and do. Perry Sand Hills are amazing and even better at sunset, also easy access to Mungo National Park a must do.
