GAGRA (Republic of Abkhazia) 2008 Part 2/2
The town was founded in the 2-nd century B.C. by Greek colonists between the rivers Joechwara and Gagripsh as a Triglite.
Gagra accommodates one of the nicest health resort parks on the Black Sea coast. He was furnished in 1902 to 1905 by architect Sherwinski by order of the duke of Oldenburg on a drained marsh area. Today its accommodates palms of the Canary islands and from China, cedars from the Himalayas and magnolias from the USA. There are peacocks, a lake with black Australian swans and a pond with Chinese goldfish. The park area contains a byzantin church from the 6-th century.
The promanade of Gagra is planted with palms and plane trees. In bars and cafés fish dishes, local wine and Turkish coffee are served.
After the end of the war (1992-1993) actions and the conquest Gagras by Abkhasian guerillas on the 2nd October, 1992 or Septembers, 1993 it came to the decline of the tourism in Gagra. Only since 2001 tourism is possible by the relative opening of the Russian-Abkhasian border. 2006 visited approx. 1.1 million tourists the town. The streets are Moscow-like.. and LAN-Internet possible in the whole town. Destructions from war (1992-93) are hardly to be seen in the town. Today Problems in Gagra are the electricity supply, as well as the lacking of living space for tourists and skilled worker's supply. In the middle of 2008 the power station that was hardly damaged by georgian mortar fire will be repaired and going to supply 90% of the town`s electricy in 2008. Skilled workers from Turkey and Central Asia going to build by 2010 20,000 new residential unities for tourists.

SUMMARY
=======
Abkhazia ( ( listen); Abkhazian: Аҧсны́, translit. Apsny [apʰsˈnɨ]; Georgian: აფხაზეთი Apxazeti [ɑpʰxɑzɛtʰi]; Russian: Абха́зия, tr. Abházija, IPA: [ɐˈpxazʲɪjə]), officially the Republic of Abkhazia, is a de facto and partially recognized republic on the eastern coast of the Black Sea, south of the Greater Caucasus mountains, in northwestern Georgia. It covers 8,660 square kilometres (3,340 sq mi) and has a population of around 240,000. Its capital is Sukhumi. The separatist Abkhazian polity, formally the Republic of Abkhazia, is recognised as a state by Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Nauru and Syria. While Georgia lacks control over Abkhazia, the Georgian government and most United Nations member states legally consider Abkhazia part of Georgia, whose constitution designates the area as the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia.
The status of Abkhazia is a central issue of the Georgian–Abkhazian conflict and Georgia–Russia relations. The region had autonomy within Soviet Georgia at the time when the Soviet Union began to disintegrate in the late 1980s. Simmering ethnic tensions between the Abkhaz—the region's titular ethnicity—and Georgians—the largest single ethnic group at that time—culminated in the 1992–1993 War in Abkhazia which resulted in Georgia's loss of control of most of Abkhazia, the de facto independence of Abkhazia, and the ethnic cleansing of Georgians from Abkhazia. Despite the 1994 ceasefire agreement and years of negotiations, the dispute remains unresolved. The long-term presence of a United Nations Observer Mission and a Russian-led Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) peacekeeping force failed to prevent the flare-up of violence on several occasions. In August 2008, Abkhaz forces fought against Georgian forces during the Russo-Georgian War, which led to the formal recognition of Abkhazia by Russia, the annulment of the 1994 ceasefire agreement, and the termination of the UN mission. On 28 August 2008, the Parliament of Georgia declared Abkhazia a Russian-occupied territory, a stance supported by the vast majority of the international community.

SUMMARY
=======
Slab pull is that part of the motion of a tectonic plate that is caused by its subduction. Plate motion is partly driven by the weight of cold, dense plates sinking into the mantle at oceanic trenches. This force and slab suction account for almost all of the force driving plate tectonics. The ridge push at rifts contributes only 5 to 10%.Carlson et al. (1983) in Lallemandet al. (2005) defines the slab pull force as:
F
s
p
=
K
×
Δ
ρ
×
L
×
A
{displaystyle F_{sp}=Ktimes Delta rho times Ltimes {sqrt {A}}}
Where:
K is 4.2g (gravitational acceleration = 9.81 m/s2) according to McNutt (1984);
Δρ = 80 kg/m3 is the mean density difference between the slab and the surrounding asthenosphere;
L is the slab length calculated only for the part above 670 km (the upper/lower mantle boundary);
A is the slab age in Ma at the trench.The slab pull force manifests itself between two extreme forms:
The aseismic back-arc extension as in the Izu-Bonin-Mariana Arc.
And as the Aleutian and Chile tectonics with strong earthquakes and back-arc thrusting.Between these two examples there is the evolution of the Farallon plate: from the huge slab width with the Nevada, the Sevier and Laramide orogenies; the Mid-Tertiary ignimbrite flare-up and later left as Juan de Fuca and Cocos plates, the Basin and Range Province under extension, with slab break off, smaller slab width, more edges and mantle return flow.
Some early models of plate tectonics envisioned the plates riding on top of convection cells like conveyor belts. However, most scientists working today believe that the asthenosphere does not directly cause motion by the friction of such basal forces. The North American Plate is nowhere being subducted, yet it is in motion. Likewise the African, Eurasian and Antarctic Plates. The subducting slabs around the Pacific Ring of Fire cool down the Earth and its Core-mantle boundary, around the African Plate the upwelling mantle plumes from the Core-mantle boundary produce rifting. The overall driving force for plate motion and its energy source remain subjects of ongoing research.
001 - Jan 2020 Abkhazia travel, part 1
This is a video describing day 1 of my Jan 2020 Abkhazia travel. Observe the Rica Lake, Upshara Canyon and Gagra! In the beginning of video you can see an orange street market in the Psou, just near the border. Here locals like to buy cheap oranges and mandarines.
Sunsets of Abkhazia are truly amazing! Gagra is a small resort city located at the Black Sea. Even in low season when not many tourists visit Gagra, atmosphere here is still relaxing and enjoyable. Hotels in Abkhazia are generally cheaper comparing to Sochi or Adler in Russia. Abkhazia can be considered as a budget destination for tourists who can't afford going in far abroad like Turkey or even Thailand but still desire to spent their leisure time outside of homeland.
