Lake Saroma Observation Deck
The Lake Saroma Observation Deck offers a coast-to-coast view of Lake Saroma, the largest lake in Hokkaido and the third largest lake in Japan. From here, you can see the Okhotsk Sea spreading beyond the vast lake, and even the distant mountains of Shiretoko on clear days. The observation deck is located on the top of Mt. Horoiwa in Saroma Town, and it can be reached by driving through a 5-kilometer gravel road or hiking up a mountain trail.

I went on a fishing boat to see off-shore scallop fishing. Freshly caught scallops were prepared for consumption on the boat. It was a memorable experience.
Grilled scallops are also great! Try them and other types of seafood at Lake Saroma Michi-no-eki.

【日本縦断自転車旅行：北海道編③】釧路湿原の大草原と、「天に続く道」を走る384kmのサイクリング

今回のルートは以下に掲載しています。
2日で帯広から佐呂間までの384kmを走りました。
摩周湖周辺は上り坂が多いですが、それ以外の場所は海岸沿いなので走りやすいです。

I rode 396km between Sapporo and Obihiro in two days.
It is easy to get speed because it is flat all the way to Asahikawa.
There is Karikatsu Pass on the way from Furano to Obihiro. Here you will climb uphill for a while.

日本縦断自転車旅行のうち、帯広から佐呂間まで走った際の動画です。
摩周湖の近くのユースホステルで一泊し、2日間で384kmを走りました。
5日目：帯広→摩周（207km）
6日目：摩周→佐呂間（177km）
帯広からしばらく海に向かって走ると、釧路に到着します。
連日の雨で気温も低く、釧路の直別駅の屋根の下で雨宿りしながら持っていたおにぎりを食べました。
そんな直別駅も利用者が極端に少ないことから、2019年3月に廃駅になってしまいました。
今は跡地だけが残っています。
釧路には釧路阿寒自転車道という、全長24kmのサイクリングロードがあります。
ここは、元々は雄別鉄道という鉄道の線路でしたが、廃線になってから自転車道として整備されました。
釧路駅にはレンタサイクルもあり、自転車をもっていかなくてもサイクリングを楽しめます。
晴れていれば近くの展望台から美しい釧路湿原の眺めを見ることができると思います。
釧路湿原からしばらく北上すると、摩周湖に到着します。
摩周湖は日本で1番、世界でもバイカル湖に次いで2番目に透明度が高い湖です。
残念ながら私が行った際には、霧に包まれていてほとんど湖面を見ることができませんでした。
摩周湖からオホーツク海沿岸に出ると、斜里町という町に到着します。
ここには「天に続く道」と言われる、道路が天に向かって延びているように見えるほどまっすぐな道路があります。
斜里町から西に行くと網走に着きます。
網走は冬の流氷が有名な場所です。
また、「オホーツク網走ザンギ丼」というご当地グルメが近年開発され、いくつかのお店で食べることができます。
晴れていれば近くの能取岬に行ってみてください。広大な草原と美しい海を見ることができます。
網走から西に行くと、日本最大の汽水湖であるサロマ湖に到着します。
連日の雨で1日中体が震えていてリタイアも考えましたが、サロマ湖ユースホステルでお風呂が一緒になったバイクツーリングの方に、北海道の絶景が見られる場所をたくさん教えて頂き、このまま稚内を目指そうと決意しました。
This is a video of traveling from Obihiro to Saroma during a bicycle trip across Japan.
I rode 384km in 2 days.
Day 5: Obihiro → Mashu (207km)
Day 6: Mashu → Saroma (177km)
After a while running from Obihiro toward the sea, you will arrive at Kushiro.
The temperature was low due to the rain every day. I stayed under the roof of Chokubetsu Station in Kushiro and ate the rice balls I had.
Chokubetsu Station was closed in March 2019 due to extremely few users.
Now only the building remains.
There is a 24km cycling road called Kushiro Akan Bicycle Road in Kushiro.
This was originally a railroad track called Yubetsu Railroad, but it has been maintained as a bicycle path after it was abolished.
Kushiro Station also has a rental bicycle, so you can enjoy cycling without having to bring a bicycle.
If it is sunny, you can see the beautiful view of Kushiro Marsh from the observation deck nearby.
After going north from Kushiro Marsh for a while, I arrived at Lake Mashu.
Lake Mashu is the most transparent lake in Japan. (This is the second most transparent lake in the world after Lake Baikal.)
Unfortunately, when I went, I could barely see the lake because of the fog.
When you leave Lake Mashu, you will arrive at Shari Town on the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk.
Here is a Road to Heaven, a road that is so straight that it looks as if it extends toward heaven.
If you go west from Shari town, you will reach Abashiri.
Abashiri is a place famous for drift ice in winter.
A local gourmet called Okhotsk Abashiri Zangidon (Rise Bowl) has recently been developed and can be eaten at several shops.
If it is sunny, please go to nearby Cape Notoro. You can see the vast grasslands and the beautiful sea.
Going west from Abashiri, you will reach Lake Saroma, Japan's largest brackish lake.
My body was trembling all day due to the continuous rain, and I thought about retiring along the way.
However, the motorcycle tourists (who took a bath with me at Lake Saroma Youth Hostel) told me many places where I can see the superb view of Hokkaido, so I decided to aim for Wakkanai as it is.
