Lake Superior Provincial Park Complete Campground Tour ~ Ontario Canada
Northern Ontario Hiking the Sand RiverTrail Pinguisibi Lake Superior Provincial Park
Lake Superior Provincial Park, Pinguisibi Trail also known as the Sand River Trail. Beautiful views and lots of rapids.
ON Hwy 17, Lake Superior Provincial Park, Canada (Time Lapse)
Ever wonder what northern Ontario looks like? It's pretty much this for hours and hours and hours. This video takes us along Ontario Highway 17 from just south of Wawa, through Lake Superior Provincial Park, to just north of Sault Ste. Marie.
Agawa Rock, Lake Superior Provincial Park, Ontario
The Agawa Rock pictographs are located on a rock face extending into Lake Superior in Agawa Bay. Some paintings are at least 1500 years old, while others may only date back to the 1800s. Agawa means sacred place in the Ojibwe language. The Ojibwe believed that spirits concentrated in the rock outcroppings of the Lake Superior shore, which belonged to the mysterious domain of the powerful Ojibwe sea monster Mishipizheu (also known as the Great Horned Lynx). The first printed reference to the Agawa pictographs occurred in ethnographer Henry Schoolcraft's 1851 study The American Indians. Their History, Condition and Prospects. The pictographs, recount the daring crossing of eastern Lake Superior by a fleet of war canoes, led by the warrior and medicine man Myeengun, with the blessing of Mishipizheu. Slide show by John Wanserski.

Great Canadian Parks #17- Lake Superior Provincial Park, ON
This is one of Ontario's largest parks & features rugged northern terrain set against the immense & unpredictable Lake Superior. The vegetation profile is most striking in the fall when brilliant reds & yellows of deciduous trees contrast with the dark evergreen forests. Mammals who call the park home include moose, white-tailed deer, woodland caribou, black bear, red fox & timber wolf
Splake Fishing at Lake Superior Provincial Park (Cross-Canada Road Trip Part 2)
This summer I embarked on a cross-Canada fishing road trip! The second stop was a splake fishing adventure at Lake Superior Provincial Park in Algoma, Ontario.
Check out the first stop on this adventure - smallmouth and pike fishing on Georgian Bay (Lake Huron):

Camping Lake Superior's North Shore - Agawa Bay, Sleeping Giant and Pancake Bay Provincial Parks
Highlights from our 2016 camping trip along Lake Superior's north shore including Lake Superior Provincial Park (Agawa Bay), Sleeping Giant PP (Marie Louise Campground), Ouimet Canyon and Pancake Bay PP. Our RV trailer is a 2014 Heartland North Trail 23rbs and the TV is a 2016 Ram 1500 Big Horn. The scenery was rugged and incredibly beautiful. The wildlife was abundant, especially the deer and bears. The rainbows and stars were bright. And the history was rich (especially the Agawa pictographs and Silver Islet). The only problems we encountered were a punctured truck tire near High Falls in Wawa, and a hiking boot that lost its sole (in the pouring rain of course) on the hike back from Ouimet Canyon. As for Lake Superior - well, it lived up to its name.

Camping - RVing: North Central Ontario 2018
Our camping trip led us back to Northern Ontario again in 2018 with stops at the KOA in Sault Ste. Marie, our favourite Provincial Park, Lake Superior (Agawa Bay), and three parks new to us: Wakami Lake, Chutes and Fairbank Lake Provincial Parks.
Despite a fire ban that started on day 3, and lasted the rest of the trip due to the exceptionally dry weather, the camping was amazing. As always Cindy and crew (Ranger) were happy campers and our Ram Copperhead and Flagstaff 26RBWS performed flawlessly on the 3000 km journey.
The KOA in Sault Ste Marie never disappoints - the nicest private campground we've found. And if you want a meal out, the Soo has amazing restaurants. For steak, try Quattro; something simpler - the Burger Don; and to have one of the best pizzas you've ever tasted delivered right to your site, Fratelli's. One of the reasons we always enjoy stopping in the Soo is the food.
Lake Superior Provincial Park is simply amazing - beautiful and remote, the kilometers long beach is lined with fantastically coloured agates (the water is frigid btw, so fair warning there ;), the hiking is picturesque, the visitor's centre is interesting, the Native pictographs facinate and the sunsets dazzle. Truthfully, we could spend weeks here but do keep in mind, the closest stores are in Wawa, 80 kms away. One Note: some of the roads are lined with tall pine trees and can be narrow - we have no trouble with our 26 footer but larger rigs could find some roads/sites challenging.
Heading east, Wakami Lake Provincial Park is very very remote. Chapleau, the closest town, is about a 75 minute drive away. The roads into the park aren't the best and require slower speeds - but its worth the drive.
There is no hydro (electricity) at Wakami which makes the remoteness, quiet solitude and darkness at night that much more palpable. But the lake is large (with no cottages), and clean and many of the sites are waterfront - some, like ours, with great privacy. Fishers will love this park - there's at least two cleaning stations for you and boat docks. The logging exhibit is being rebuilt but is definitely worth the 1 km hike.
Chutes Provincial Park is just off the Trans Canada (Hwy 17) in the town of Massey. The sites are huge, the hiking along the river and its many chutes/rapids is really nice and Manitoulin Island is only an hours drive away. It seemed many RVers used this as a stop over on the trek between the Sault and points south. Note: even though very close to town, bears were active in the park.
Fairbank Lake Provincial Park is about an hour west and north of Sudbury. A quiet park on a beautiful lake (shared with cottagers) it was a peaceful stop with many nice waterfront sites. Note: because of Fairbank's proximity to Sudbury, there are quite a few seasonal campers at this provincial park.
And speaking of Sudbury, Science North and Dynamic Earth and the Big Nickel were definitely worth the visit.
This was a peaceful trip filled with great memories. For us, Lake Superior and Wakami were highlights (for quite different reasons mind you) and it all reminded us that it's true what our licence plates say: Ontario - Yours to Discover.

Parry Sound, Georgian Bay, Ontario
At the end of summer, we embarked on a four-day weekend road trip from Toronto to Sault Ste. Marie to Lake Superior Provincial Park. On the third day, we started making our way back south. With the Huron shores on our right, we drove down the highway towards the town of Parry Sound, located on the shores of Georgian Bay.

Exploring Lake Superior Provincial Park - Old Woman Bay, Sand River Falls & Chippewa Falls
Just a small taste of Lake Superior Provincial Park in Northern Ontario. This park is right outside our door, so we have been exploring some of the easier to access areas. The Coastal Trail follows the lake through the park for 65 kilometers. The general theme on the trail is Slippery, steep and rugged.
In this particular outing, we visit Chippewa Falls on our way to the park. Chippewa Falls is the mid-point of the Trans Canada Highway. The waterfalls are viewable right from the highway.
Old Woman Bay is in the northern section of the park. The face of an old woman can be seen in the cliffs overlooking Lake Superior on the left side of the bay. The Old Woman River enters lake Superior at Old Woman Bay. A popular fishing spot to try your luck for salmon and trout when the run is on.
Pinguisibi trail, or the Sand River trail is at about a halfway point in the park. The trail here takes you past several waterfalls. The river has decent fishing for Brook trout, as well as salmon and steelhead rainbow trout when the run is on in the spring and fall.

As the end of summer approaches, we embarked on a four-day weekend road trip from Toronto to Sault Ste. Marie to Lake Superior Provincial Park.
Granite rocks, waterfalls, crystal clear lake water, and ancient indigenous pictographs awaited us.
These were just our favourite moments during this brief road trip.
