Tali Karng - Alpine National Park, Victoria Australia, March 2011
Beginning and ending in misty fog far above the quiet town of Licola. This is our Hiking trip to the only natural lake in the Victorian Alps.
What I didn't capture in this video (possibly impossible to capture anyway) was our mini adventure up the never ending waterfalls at the Eastern side of the lake. Absolutely amazing!
Thanks to the traditional Aboriginal owners of the place (Gunai Kurnai), who let us visit, even though they aren't even allowed to go there themselves!
Hiking Lake Tali Karng in Winter
Lake Tali Karng is the only lake in the Victorian Alpine National Park. At 35 acres in size and with a depth of 50 meters the lake is surrounded by the mountain peaks that 1500 years ago collapsed to create it. There are two ways into the lake, a shorter easier route from the North or a longer more challenging 17km trek up the Wellington River from the south. We hike this more challenging approach in winter and enjoy an almost deserted natural jewel. Subscribe for a new video each week! New content uploaded every weekend.

Mt Wellington Track - Lake Tali Karng
Cup weekend 2016 trip to Lake Tali Karng. Footage is over two days, the plan was to 4WD to Millers Hut and then hike in and camp at Nyimba Camp but the weather was atrocious. After driving as far as Mt Wellington we retreated and camped down on the Wellington River. The following day we drove back in and hiked to Lake Tali Karng. Magic spot.

Bluff Hut in Winter, Alpine National Park, Victoria, Australia
A snow shoe hike to Bluff Hut in Victoria's Alpine National Park leads to some interesting landscape photography opportunities.

I approached by 4WD-ing through the night as close as I could and then snow shoeing it up from the road by torch light, to get ahead of the dawn. I found Bluff Hut after a couple of hours and had plenty of time to compose, but it kept snowing pretty hard until mid-morning. I came away with two version of the scene and really liked both for different reasons. One shows a clear, crisp, starkly white landscape, the other, shot during the snow storm, almost makes me shiver to look at it. The snow is streaking down in lines, almost obscuring the subject. I couldn't decide which I liked the most, so I've included both.
On the way out I came across a forest scene with icy white clinging to every branch. It was snowing lightly, but the sun was trying to penetrate the low clouds, causing brief moments of brightness, followed by extended periods of low visibility. I set up my gear and settled in to wait, reshooting several times over the course of an hour or so. Every so often I had to shake the snow off my big umbrella and wipe down my lens. Eventually the conditions cleared without losing the mystical atmosphere. Job done!
By this time my pack was almost invisible under a layer of white, and my muscles ached from standing still so long in the cold. When I got to my car, it was likewise carpeted in ice and the drive out was quite an experience. Roll back, edge forward, rinse and repeat. Several hours later I was out and heading for Mansfield happy with the images I'd found. Note to self, two sets of chains next time.

Sandy Creek 4wd Track Alpine National Park Victoria
After crossing into Victoria I take the Sandy Creek side track into Alpine national park. The track becomes quite steep up a mountain side, but by lowering my pressures to 20psi I crawl up with ease in my Land Rover Defender.

Cross Cut Saw Alpine National Park by Drone
Deep inside Victoria's Alpine National park lies the cross cut saw. A knife edge ridge line that extends 5 to 6km at over 1700m elevation between Mount Howitt and Mount Speculation. A gorgeous sight at sunrise and a perfect place to do some high country trail running

Woods Point To LIcola High Country Trip
Licola
4WD-min-min_1_1000x6674WD_road-minFrom_the_Bridge_Flat-min_1
Licola is a small and attractive village beside the Macalister River, formerly a timber town from where early cattlemen drove their herds to the nearby high plains and mountains for Summer.
Today, the Lions Clubs of Victoria own a large section of land in Licola and operate a wilderness village and youth camp on site, which is immediately surrounded by farm land. The town still generates its own power, pumps and treats its own water and is responsible for waste management. Licola is the only privately owned town in Victoria and the only one in the state not connected to mains power. Area highlights include the spectacular views available from the Pinnacles lookout and tower, the opportunity to visit many high country cattlemen’s huts, the iconic walk into mysterious Lake Tali Karng, the mystery of Wonnangatta Station and spectacular wild flowers in bloom during Spring, perched on Victoria’s rooftop.
Licola can be reached from Heyfield (53km) to the south or Jamieson (90km) to the north.
