West Bellona v East Rennell
Semi-final Day 4
SIWSAP in Tigoa, Rennell Bellona (2017)
Tigoa is the provincial township of Rennell and Bellona Province and is in the middle of the island of Rennell. The province is to the south of Solomon Islands. The township is exposed to a number of natural hazards. For the local population, the most critical is a tropical cyclone event. But they also feel at risk of high winds, drought, and temperature rise.
As a climate adaptation project in the water sector, the Solomon Islands Water Sector Adaptation Projection strives to assist rural communities and provincial townships with limited water resources to be resilient through both hardware and software interventions.
The Solomon Islands Water Sector Adaptation Project (SIWSAP) is a four year climate change adaptation project funded by the GEF Least Developed Countries Fund (GEF LDCF) and implemented by the Solomon Islands Government and UNDP Solomon Islands. On the ground in six provinces, SIWSAP’s key objective is to improve the resilience of water resources to the impacts of climate change and improve health, sanitation and quality of life, so that livelihoods can be enhanced and sustained in the targeted vulnerable areas.
