We took a weekend trip to Lake Sumner Forest Park and Hanmer Springs! Before heading back to Uni, we stopped at Hanmer Springs Spa to relax in the thermal pools.
Road to Lake Tennyson, New Zealand
Gravel road to road to Tennyson Lake, Canterbury lasts about 30 km heading from Hanmer Springs. After passing mountains road goes through valley next to the river and the scenery is beautiful. Afterwards, gravel rod gets more difficult to get over to the lake, but if you are 4WD you will be fine. Going 20-30 km/h we got to the lake after 2 hours with our 2WD campervan. Adventurous experience!

Lake Tennyson, New Zealand
Nine months ago I quit my job in corporate marketing back in the US to pursue a long standing dream. To travel the world sharing my journey in the form of pictures and words. I’ve been living in New Zealand since October 2017 with my partner, finding it more and more difficult to indulge in the picturesque countryside without heaps of tourist every which way. In this experience I’ve decided to dedicate most of my New Zealand blog posts and videos to finding some of the under rated places in the country’s South Island. Lake Tennyson is about 50 km from Hanmer Springs in Northwestern Canterbury. Getting to the campsites on the far end of the lake is a proven challenge, but one that’s worth every last step. Non of the surrounding mountain summits have a direct trail, leaving endless possibilities for the imagination. My next feat will be trekking up the mountain to the west of Lake Tennyson to the glacial lake called The Princess Baths.
Hunting and fishing - Lake Tennyson
Hi there and welcome to my channel
In this video three of us spend 3 days and 2 nights up at Lake Tennyson (North Canterbury, New Zealand).
No venison but lots of sunshine, some frost and trout...
I also try out some new gear:
- Toaks titanium 750 ml pot
- Naturehike outdoors hammock
- Maxi titanium canteen cup with lid
Great time was had by all.
Take care and enjoy the blessing of the great outdoors.

New Year 2016
Steve and Gary head off to Lake Tennyson for a few nights. Great weather greeted us but we ended up seeing much of the trip from under the tarp..at least I did, Steve made the most of being on a lake with brown trout. He managed to catch a couple brownies - talk about the tenacious trout angler...go Steve!
Gary also tried out some gear...Nalgene Stainless Steel 1.1litre bottle in the fire and the Light My Fire grandpa grill. Both worked out just fine.
Take care everybody and enjoy the great outdoors...good or bad weather, right gear and attitude will always see you through.
Cheers to Steve for putting up with an 'off colour' camper!

Early Morning at Lake Tennyson
Paske Pass (Lake Tennyson region)
Follow 12 adventurous trampers as we climb over three passes in the vicinity of the Paske, Clarence and Wairau rivers. It was steep going at times, but a very scenic and enjoyable 3-day trip. The waterfalls were certainly impressive, as were the snow-capped mountains in late spring, and the many wild tenting spots along the way.
Lake Tennyson sunrise in New Zealand
This was taken with my GoPro Hero 3 while my brother and I camped near Lake Tennyson in the South Island of New Zealand. If you are ever in the Nelson Lake National Park region of New Zealand, I highly recommend this free, remote, and incredible campsite.

Last ditch effort to overturn freedom camping rules in Hanmer Springs
Hurunui District Council passed a new freedom camping bylaw in July, which opens up four parts of the town centre to freedom campers where none were allowed previously.
Evening Lake Tennyson
We went up to lake Tennyson one winter day. The sun was starting to set and we got the camera out and started shooting. Luke Tennyson is in the hills behind Hanmer Springs up the Clarence river.
