Lake Titicaca Travel Guide (Uros, Amantaní and Taquile Islands)
To close off our trip to Peru we headed from Cuzco to Puno with the intention of covering Lake Titicaca (Lago Titicaca) as best we could over the duration of two days. Our trip started from Puno early in the morning when we boarded a boat bound for the Uros Island. The Uros people, who lives on floating reed islands, welcomed us to their floating islands where we had a chance to tour around and purchase some souvenirs.

Afterwards, we took a traditional rowing boat made out of reeds to another island before heading off to Amantaní. Upon arriving our host family greeted us and we headed to our homestay where we had a traditional lunch consisting of Quinoa soup, potatoes, fried cheese and rice. Afterwards we hiked to the top of the Island (Pachamama) where we had incredible 360 degree views. It felt like we could almost touch the clouds. In the evening we dressed up in traditional attire (ponchos) and headed over for a dance party with live traditional music. The following morning we visited our final island (Taquile) before heading back to Puno. Overall, it was an incredible trip and one we recommend highly; however, be sure to do the two day trip and opposed to the one day option for a more relaxed time.
Lake Titicaca Travel Guide (Uros, Amantaní, Taquile) to Puno, Peru Travel Video Transcript:
So we are taking a really fun overnight trip from Puno today to visit Lake Titicaca. Yeah, we're going to visit several islands and do a homestay overnight. Yeah, and we'll get to meet the different communities that live here because we have Aymara people and Quechua people. So we've just arrived at our first island. And this one is called Corazon de Lago which means the heart of the lake. And this is an Aymara community that lives on a floating reed island so let's go have a look around. Let's check it out.
So it is a bit of a strange sensation walking on the reed islands because it is not solid ground and your feet do sink in a little bit but not to the point where you feel like you're going to fall through and you know go in the water. But still kind of interesting.
Okay, so what have we learned so far on this floating reed island? So we've visiting the Uros floating reed islands and there is approximately 80 to 90 of them. And the people who originally came here were escaping hostile neighbors.
So this is quite a secluded environment for them.
We've made it to our third island of the day. This one is called Amantani and this island is actually home to Quechua people whereas the first two that we visited were home to the Aymara people.
So aside from meeting our host families, what I'm most excited for is food. Because it is already lunchtime. It's a little bit past our lunch time actually. And we forgot to pack snacks. Yep. So I'm starving. So before we settle in we're going to get some local food. Yeah, and apparently they are vegetarian on this island, so we're going to be having a Quinoa soup and then just like potatoes and roots and different vegetables. Cheese and stuff like that. Cheese, yes. So it should be good.
So are you doing okay? A little bit out of breathe? Yeah, a little bit out of breath. We're still feeling the altitude. Actually Lake Titicaca is higher than Cuzco if you can believe that.
Sopa de Quinoa. Ah, sopa de quinoa. Quinoa soup. Ah, que rico.
So we reached the top of Pachamama. How are the views? Oh, we sure did. The views are insane here. It is almost like you're touching the clouds. It is like you can reach up and touch them.
So we're all dressed up, we've had our dinner and now it is time to go to the party. And we are dressed up in traditional outfits. Party!
Alright, so it is a new day and we are visiting a new island. Yes, this is our last stop on Lake Titicaca. This is Taquile Island and we're just going to take a wander around and see what we find. Yes, maybe we'll find our guide and she can tell us a bit of the history of the place. Let's go find her.
This is part of our Travel in Peru series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Peruvian culture, Peruvian arts, Peruvian foods, Peruvian religion, Peruvian cuisine and Peruvian people. All things Peruano. The best of Comida Peruana and Cocina Peruana.

Tourist Traps and Floating Islands on Lake Titicaca | Puno, Peru
What a wet day we had today… It rained the whole morning! It started off with a quick tour of the Uros (floating) Islands on the Peruvian side of Lake Titicaca. As with a lot of tourism, we felt these islands had lost some charm as it was all focused on us buying things and forcing us to pay additional money to go out on a boat that lasted 5 minutes. It wasn’t a bad experience, but definitely not an authentic encounter. We finished off the day on Taquile Island, which was beautiful!

Welcome to the Uros Islands.
My name is Percy, the leader of this community. There are six families living on this island, which is 40 metres long and 30 metres wide. Family members always stay near their brothers, or near their fathers and mothers. Fathers and mothers are important – they are leaders of the community.
The most important activity in this community is fishing. We also have handicraft. The women make small objects for Uros life. The men use reeds of totoras to make small boats for sailing and big boats to be used as gondolas for tourist transportation or taxis in Lake Titicaca.
My name is Amalia, and I live on this island with six families in total. I’m married, and I have one child who is six years old. I work on this island, especially for men. I cook for the husbands. When they are working, cutting the totoras, they need food. I wake up at about 6am. Families normally go to bed at about 8pm.
We cut many reeds of totora to make the houses we put on the islands. Totora grows in another place, we cut it and bring it to the island. We also fix any broken houses using green totoras, not dry totoras. We travel four kilometres every six weeks to gather fresh totoras to put on the island. We use totoras roots to create small gardens on the island and sometimes we plant crops.
Our boats are called balsas. The balsas are our local traditional transportation. Children use small balsas to go to school and men use them to go fishing. We use the big balsas – that we call Mercedes Benz - as transportation to go from this island to other places and come back here.
Here brothers and sisters work together – we live here. And we do good work to make sure the island stays afloat. We use these reeds and roots to keep the island afloat. This island is held together by many root pieces – that’s its foundation. We cut and bring big block pieces. From this place to another it’s long kilometres. Here they’re like brick shapes. In each block piece, we put a eucalyptus rod, which we get from the mainland, not from the island. Then we use a rope to tie it. We tie all the root pieces together. This protects the reeds from breaking apart and so it holds its position. Local people call these blocks idli. This makes the islands float.
This island has 12 anchors. This holds it in place in the windy season. If it’s too windy, we’ll end up in Bolivia – and we don’t have Bolivian passports. Ancestors on Uros used to use this kind of rope, but it doesn’t last for a long time. Now we use synthetic rope to tie the foundations. This is a tool to cut the green reeds of the totora. On these foundations we put many layers of reeds. Firstly, we put them in one direction, and then the other direction, so it makes a crisscross shape. The block is approximately 1 metre. The totoras layer is 2 metres. The whole thing is 3 metres. The houses are made out of totoras reeds. This is for the rainy season or protection.
They use this tower for local communication in the Uros community. They call to other people for local activities and celebrations.
Let’s go and take a look at the houses. This is a family house – it’s a modern house.
In the rainy season, we use plastic and reed mats on the roof. Local people dry their totoras reeds in this shape. They use the dried reeds to make houses. This is another family house. This family is drying reeds of totoras to put over their roof. This is my house. This big one is one of the first houses. It belongs to my father. It’s the first house near the lake.

ON AN ISLAND MADE OF REEDS - Lake Titicaca - Puno - Peru
On an island made of reeds, we learn how the Uros people build their floating islands on the highest navigatable lake in the world, Lake Titikaka.
These Peruvian natives survived the Inka invasion on their boats, also made of reeds! This unique way of building is ingrained in their culture, we speak with a native that explains the difficulties of living on the island. They need to constantly be replacing the reeds every 10 to 15 days, and in order to do this, they work as a community - a very inspiring way of living and a must see in your lifetime.

Puno - Lake Titicaca - Peru
The Lake Titicaca (the lake from where –according to the legend- Manco Ccapac and Mama Occllo emerged to found the Inca Empire) is the largest lake in South America and it is shared by Peru and Bolivia. It is the highest navigable lake in the world, with a surface elevation of 3,812 meters above sea level (12,507 ft).
The Uros communities: where people use the dried totora reeds to make reed boats and to make their islands themselves. Here dozens of families live keeping traditions of their Inca and Aymara ancestors.
Taquile and Amantani are two of the numerous islands the Lake Titicaca and also considered as the most visited because of the lifestyle people have had for hundreds of years (men weave and neat amazing colorful clothes among other curious traditions). It is believed they have the blood colored black since they are not afraid to cold temperatures.
Machu Travel Peru takes you to visit this amazing city in the highlands of Peru, an amazing place full of history, legends, colorful customs and breathtaking sceneries.

Uros Floating Islands aerial video on Lake Titicaca, Puno, Peru
presents: A short aerial film of the Uros floating islands of Lake Titikaka in Peru. The Uros people live permanently on these reed built islands. They are anchored to the fairly shallow waters via ropes tied to large rocks. They replace the top layer of reeds frequently, as the bottom layers rot. We filmed the islands from the air to give a rarely seen overview of the layout of the community on a broad water avenue stretched out amongst the massive reedbeds.

Magical Peru #16: Uros' Floating Islands in Lake Titicaca
Magical Peru:
We woke up very early in Puno to go on a boat trip on lake Titicaca! On this first part, we stopped by the floating islands of the Uros People. On the next video, we head to Isla Taquile.
The Uros are a pre-Incan people who live on forty-two self-fashioned floating islands in Lake Titicaca Puno, Peru and Bolivia. The Uros use bundles of dried totora reeds to make reed boats (balsas mats), and to make the islands themselves. The Uros islands at 3810 meters above sea level are just five kilometers west from Puno port.
On the afternoon, we continued our boat tour heading to Isla Taquile, the most industrious island in Lake Titicaca. Its walled paths are crowned with rustic arches and dotted with Inca and pre-Inca ruins. Some 350 Quechua-speaking families still live in Taquile island following Inca creeds. Please watch Magical Peru #17:
Puno is a city in southeastern Peru, located on the shore of Lake Titicaca. It is the capital city of the Puno Region and the Puno Province with a population of approximately 100,000. The city was established in 1668 by viceroy Pedro Antonio Fernández de Castro as capital of the province of Paucarcolla with the name San Juan Bautista de Puno. Puno has several churches dating back from the colonial period; they were built to service the Spanish population and evangelize the natives. Lake Titicaca (Spanish: Lago Titicaca) is a lake in the Andes on the border of Peru and Bolivia. By volume of water, it is the largest lake in South America. It is often called the highest navigable lake in the world, with a surface elevation of 3,812 m (12,507 ft).
When we first arrived in Peru, we spent a couple of weeks studying Spanish in Lima (please watch the vlog Living in Lima) then we headed to the North of Peru and visited Trujillo, Chiclayo and some archaeological sites, such as tombs, pyramids and ancient cities. On the South of Peru, our first stop was in Arequipa, and then we headed to Chivay and its thermal pools (La Calera hot springs) and the Colca Canyon, to do a canyon tour. Now, we go to the country side: Puno, Lake Titicaca, Cusco, Machu Pichu and so on...
On the next video we continue our boat trip on Lake Titicaca and arrive on the Isla Tacuile!

PUNO, PERU | Things to do at 12,500 feet up!
Puno was one of our favorite spots on our Peruvian trip! With only 150,000 people, it's small enough to not feel cramped like a big city, but large enough to have great sights and food.
We began our day at 12,500 feet up by struggling with some altitude sickness. Once we found a delicious cafe just outside Plaza de Armas, we began to perk up!
After a quick pitstop at our AirBnb, we ventured even higher in elevation to Mirador El Condor which has a gorgeous overview of the city and Lake Titicaca.
Then we returned to central Puno and enjoyed a tasty lunch with a great view. Several Coca de Mates may have been consumed as well!
