Lake Vesuvius Recreation Area, Ironton, Ohio - Lakeshore Trail hike 10-17-12
A beautiful fall day for an 8 mile hike. Really nice area and I hit the fall colors at their peak.
The turnaround point at aprox 4 miles is a confusing junction of three trails and creek crossings at the north end of the lake. It will take some looking and exploring to find where you are headed. Other than that, the trail is pretty straight forward as long as you keep your eyes open for blazes. A few extra blazes at draw crossings and slope changes would help a lot. There are several places where you travel quit a bit before you find a confirmation blaze.
Lake Vesuvius Recreation Area contains a 143 acre lake, two campgrounds, picnic areas, group camping, fishing, boating, hiking and an archery trail. It is named for the historic Vesuvius Iron Furnace and is the Wayne National Forest's premier developed site. This complex is located 6.5 miles north of Ironton, just off State Route 93.
The historic iron furnace is located at the base of the dam. In 1939 the narrows of Storms Creek offered a site for this lake, which were dammed by the Civilian Conservation Corp. The rugged hills and out-cropping cliffs provide a scenic backdrop for this historical and beautiful site. The offers a variety of opportunities for outdoor activities.
About the Wayne National Forest
Discover the wonder and beauty of the Wayne National Forest. Tucked away in the Appalachian foothills, you'll experience the natural beauty of wildflowers, rocks formations, trees, butterflies, and abundant wildlife.
Explore the Forest's hills, fishing lakes, rivers, and trails. Every season holds its own special beauty: the white dogwoods and pink redbuds of spring; summer's emerald hills reflected in quiet lakes; the colorful pallet of autumn; and the shimmering beauty of a new snowfall. Campgrounds sheltered under towering trees and thousands of acres open to hunting and nature study await your visit.
The Wayne NF is located in three units. These units are located across twelve Ohio Counties. Although the boundaries include 833,990 acres, most of the land within those boundaries is in private ownership. The national forest exists as a patchwork across the land, normally occupying lands less suitable for agricultural or commercial development.
The 1280 x 720 video was recorded with a Panasonic Lumix DMC SZ1 digital camera. The video was rendered with CyberLink PowerDirector v8 to a 1280 x 720 12 Mbps MPEG2 file.

Lake Vesuvius Backpack Trail - Wayne National Forest - Ohio Hiking
After finishing Shawnee State Forest Backpacking loop I head down to Lake Vesuvius, just 45 min further, to hike the approx. 17 mile loop in Wayne National Forest.
Along the trail I meet up with another Ohio youtuber, find an awesome campsite, and fly the drone.

Lake Vesuvius Walk (Ohio)
Solo Backpacking And Fishing Trip - Lake Vesuvius Wayne National Forest
Join me on an overnight backpacking trip to one of the best backpacking trails in Ohio.
Lake Vesuvius Lake Shore Trail
Lake Vesuvius is located in The Wayne National Forest in Southern Ohio just 6.5 miles north of Ironton Ohio.
The Lake Shore Trail is 8.25 miles long.

Lake Vesuvius Backpack Trail, Wayne National Forest, Ohio
A solo overnighter at Lake Vesuvius in Wayne National Forest, Ohio. Join me as we go for a 16+ mile hike using the Vesuvius Backpack trail and a section of the northern Lakeshore trail. The video was captured at the end of July 2018.
The trail was hiked counterclockwise. Trail conditions in late July 2018 were great. The forestry service has recently cleared and freshly blazed the trails in the area. Very few people were on the trail despite the perfect weather.
Camp was set-up on the northern section of the backpack trail.
Several campsites are shown on the video but most are directly on the trail. If you had some extra time to explore you could surely find some nice secluded spots. There looked to be several potential spots on top of some of the rock cliffs/bluffs. Campfires are allowed as long as conditions aren't too dry. Most but not all camp sites could accommodate both tents and hammocks.
This is a good place to consider kayaking / canoeing camping since there are a few camping spots on or near the lake shore. This is also a great area to go horseback riding with many different trails available to explore. The lake is very quite since only electric motors are allowed.
Bugs were not too bad for the time of year (End of July 2018). Some seed ticks were present and trail spider webs were heavy at times.
Safe overnight parking is provided at the Boat Dock. It may be possible to park overnight at the beach area depending which ranger is on patrol that night.
Don't buy a map! Use a trail map provided by the US Forest Service which your tax dollars have already paid for.
Tested out lots of new gear including a cheap bug net (Wecamture Hammock Bug Net) and a couple new quilts.

Wayne National Forest, Lake Vesuvius Autumn Backpacking Trip (Slideshow)
This slideshow is from a backpacking trip that a couple friends and I endeavored upon this past October. The trail was located at Lake Vesuvius in the southern portion of Wayne National Forest. It was an amazing adventure with breathtaking views of the water and fall foliage. The song in the background is Society by Eddie Vedder.
Lake Vesuvius Overnight Backpacking Adventure, Wayne National Forest
I recently backpacked at Lake Vesuvius, in the Wayne National Forest, Ohio. I primarily stuck to the lakeshore trail, but also backpacked the northern section of the backpackers trail.
Our overnight camp was a horse camp at the northern end of the lake, where the horse trail, lakeshore trail, and backpackers trail intersect. It was a large camp that even had a picnic table.
Water supply was in abundance from streams, and Lake Vesuvius itself, while on the lakeshore trail. So the need to carry a lot of water is unessesary. The backpackers trail does require you to carry more water, especially in the northern section, since it is higher in elevation and water supply is limited.
All in all, this is a great area for beginner backpacking to experienced backpackers. The views of the lake are awesome, the trails are well blazed, the rock formations are grand. There definitely is something for everyone on this trail.
So kick back, relax, and enjoy some footage of this awesome trip.
