Pucón is a Chilean city and commune administered by the municipality of Pucón. It is located in the Province of Cautín, Araucanía Region, 100 km to the southeast of Temuco and 780 km to the south of Santiago.Pucón's location by a lake and volcano, along with its relatively stable climate, especially in summer, make it a popular destination for tourists. It offers a variety of sports and adventure/recreational activities for tourists, including water skiing, snow skiing, backpacking, white water rafting and kayaking, horse back riding, natural hot springs, zip line rides, and guided ascents of Villarrica volcano. According to the 2002 census carried out by the Chilean National Statistics Institute, Pucón spans an area of 1,248.5 km2 (482 sq mi) and has 21,107 inhabitants (10,705 men and 10,402 women). Of these, 13,837 (65.6%) lived in urban areas and 7,270 (34.4%) in rural areas. The population grew by 47% (6,751 persons) between the 1992 and 2002 censuses. Pucón is a major centre of adventure tourism in Chile. During the summer, tourist attractions include hiking, rafting, horseback riding, bird watching, fishing, canopy trails, and canyoning. Due to its striking natural surroundings, near a volcano and several lakes, nature reserves and thermal baths, Pucón attracts tourism all year round. In winter and spring, it is possible to go skiing or snowboarding on the slopes of Villarrica volcano or visit thermal baths in the middle of the Valdivian temperate rain forest.
Volcanoes
The most well-known is Villarrica (volcano), but other volcanoes tourists can visit include Mocho-Choshuenco, Quetrupillán and Lanín. The 2,840 meter high Villarrica is part of the Ring of Fire that lie around the basin of the Pacific Ocean. It is an active volcano with more than 82 eruptions since 1558; the most recent of which occurred on March 3rd, 2015. Despite this, it is possible to climb it throughout the year, if weather and volcanic activity permit. During winter, the summit is completely covered by snow, and offers views of at least seven of the surrounding lakes.
El Cañi
El Cañi, meaning “sight that transforms”, is a private protected area of 500 hectares belonging to a non-profit organization. It contains hiking trails through ancient Araucarias, Lengas (Lenga Beech), Coigues, old volcanic craters and lagoons. It is administered by a group of young farmers who offer an “eco” alternative to tourism. The park is home to foxes, pumas, pudús (a small kind of deer), wild ducks and condors, among many other species. Pucon, Chile (Hiking the active Villarrica Volcano)

After finishing Patagonia, we didn't quite know how tired we were until arriving in Pucon, Chile. This town was exactly what we needed; a quiet mountain town with good infrastructure,
food, and again very friendly people.

Three days into relaxing and I needed a challenge. The new challenge was to summit the nearby Villarrica Volcano. The video and below cover my best memories of that day.

As we prepare to hike the last fifteen minutes to the top of the mountain, I ask, “Is the mask required”?
The response was, “If the gas is toxic, then use the mask”
To which I ask the obvious question of “When is it toxic”?
“You’ll know”
So I begin the last portion thinking, “Am I going to die from the gas”? Or better yet, will I merely pass out from the gas and fall into the volcano and become a sacrifice to the gods of Villarrica? None of that happens but when we arrive at the top, the smell is harsh. It’s like being at a hot spring but like I’ve never experienced before. The gas mask was great for breathing but my eyes were another story. After walking away from the smoke, clearing my eyes and walking back, I saw liquid magma exploding into the air. These few minutes we had at the top, despite the agonizing gas, were incredible and one of the best experiences on the trip.

That wasn’t all, we still had to descend. The day quickly turned from mountaineering expedition into an adventure park. After we geared up in suits that surely would make me win sexiest man of Pucon, we took our ride down the mountain via butt sliding down a series of ice luges. There was a minimal safety talk but all I heard was we would slide on our butts, brake with an ice axe, and if the speed was great enough then we would eventually stop by running into the person in front of us, brilliant! We had an incredible time and felt like I was five years old at a water park.

My experience ascending Villarica, one of Chile's most active volcanoes.
It is possible to drive in a 4x4 up the first 1/4 of the volcano. Then, to the crater's rim it's normally a 6-8 hour intense trek over snow, ice, and volcanic rock.
Well worth the effort, it offers breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside and a glimpse into the belly of the beast revealing a lake of bubbling red lava, accompanied by rumbling beneath your feet, thunderous clashes, and sulfuric gasses rising up through the smoke.
Descending is much quicker, but none the less exciting as you sled, ski, or just slide down natural ice troughs or wash channels that create perfect toboggan runs.

Villarrica, with its type of lava composition, is one of a small number worldwide known to have an active (but in this case intermittent) lava lake within its crater. The volcano usually generates strombolian eruptions with ejection of incandescent pyroclasts and lava flows. Rainfall plus melted snow and glacier ice can cause massive lahars (mud and debris flows). Guided ascents are popular during summer months, but are subject to the current conditions

Villarrica covers an area of 400 km2, has an estimated volume of 250 km3 and stands tall 2847m (9,341 ft.).
It contains volcanic caves and about 26 scoria cones. The constant degassing at the lava lake turns the otherwise quite effusive lava more viscous, heightening its explosive potential.
