Lake Waccamaw State Park, NC
A hike on December 26, 2018 exploring the trail system of Lake Waccamaw State Park. This was my first time visiting Lake Waccamaw, the largest of the Carolina bays in southeastern North Carolina. The surface area of Lake Waccamaw is nearly 9,000 acres with over 14 miles of shoreline and a maximum width of 5.2 miles, considerably larger than the other bays in the region with open water. Most Carolina bays are fed entirely by rainfall, but Lake Waccamaw is fed by Friar Swamp on the northern shore. The Waccamaw River drains the lake's southern shore, which is also abutted by the Green Swamp. While some of the largest bays in nearby Bladen County have an acidic pH below 5.0, limestone bluffs on the northern shore of Lake Waccamaw keep the pH around 6.9. This neutral pH allows aquatic life to thrive, and thus the lake has far more biodiversity than nearby bays, including the American alligator!
The primary unit of the state park is along the southern shore featuring 8 trails, backcountry campsites, and a 375-foot pier. I began my hike at the visitors center following the Overlook Trail loop to connect with Boardwalk Trail 2, which leads to the first view of Lake Waccamaw and also meets the Lakeshore Trail, the longest trail in the park. I then followed the Lakeshore Trail west, doing an out-and-back on the New Boardwalk Trail before reaching the Boardwalk Trail and the pier. This pier provided outstanding, panoramic views of all 14 miles of shoreline. From there I continued west, passing through two of the backcountry campsites near the Pine Woods Trail junction.
Beyond this junction was a lonely out-and-back on a narrow strip of white sand between the lake and the swamp. The trail condition deteriorated quickly, with swamp/lake completely covering the trail in multiple sections. At times I sank to my knees in swamp, not too pleasant with the winter temperatures! But this section of the Lakeshore Trail was also the most beautiful area of the park. There werre many splendid views of gently rolling tea-colored waves on white sand beaches, with stunted bald cypress trees dotting the shore. Then came the most unnerving part of the hike. The last few hundred feet before the Lake Waccamaw Dam was covered in slow-moving water. When the water levels in the lake are up, apparently the Waccamaw River drains the entire area, including the trail. I cautiously proceeded through this section sticking to clear moving water over sand and it was not that bad. The boardwalk over the dam was by no means a spectacular turnaround point, but I was glad to complete the entire Lakeshore Trail. To make a mini loop I took the Pine Woods and Sand Ridge Nature Trails through the campsites and picnic area, staying high and dry in the longleaf savanna on the edge of pocosin swamp. Overall I really enjoyed Lake Waccamaw State Park, it was surprisingly beautiful. But if you decide to hike after rainfall, you'll likely be hiking through the lake and swamp, not beside it.
Hike was 10.3 miles with 130 feet elevation gain in 5 hours and 10 minutes.

Johnny McNeill, A North Carolina Living Legend
Well into his 90's, North Carolina's oldest licensed pharmacist, John McNeill of Lake Waccamaw and Whiteville has long become a living legend. I met this amazing man about three years ago when we were introduced to him by a friend who had moved from Wilmington, North Carolina to Lake Waccamaw several years ago to pursue her career as a science teacher. She began to tell us stories about this amazing human being she had befriended whose life story and his dedication to community and the very beautiful Lake Waccamaw went far beyond the dedication of an ordinary citizen. who had lived a rather comfortable life. A veteran of World War II and the commander of a landing craft who had stretched his height to make the minimum height standard for a Naval officer, and who had personally met the young Lt. Jack Kennedy of PT 109 fame during the Pacific naval war, and who formed a Sea Scout troop and subsequently a Boy Scout troop while fathering four sons and two daughters, and who opened up his beautiful home on the lake to the entire community every Friday night from May to October was someone I had to meet and whose story I had to retell on video. A man who celebrates every Independence Day with hundreds of neighbors and friends at his beautiful lakeside home with the recitation of the Declaration of Independence and a full twenty one gun salute, while in his 80's and 90's, was someone that the whole world needed to know about. The fact that two Governors of the great state of North Carolina had graced his home by reciting the Declaration at two of his Independence Day celebrations was a story that had to be told so that it could live on forever. Such true patriotism is not often seen in people today, especially amongst those who are beyond the age where they are bestowed the simple title of senior citizen. It is his love of country, community and people that makes this story so very special!

The Native American presence at Hobcaw Barony is apparent in the property’s very name, said to be a Native American word meaning “between the waters.” Physical evidence is readily seen in the shell middens that line the shores of Hobcaw’s creeks and emerge as outcroppings in the marshes. Many other material remains have been found at Hobcaw in the form of pottery sherds, blades, points, and numerous other artifacts, yet much archaeological work remains to be done here.
In this video, Buster Hatcher, Chief of the Waccamaw Indian People, who are based in nearby Aynor, South Carolina, discusses the history and present-day circumstances of the Waccamaw and other Indian tribes in the region.
Lake Phelps, Nc
Washington and Tyrrell Counties, North Carolina. Located on the coastal plain, about 55 miles inland from the Atlantic Ocean, this is North Carolina's 2nd largest natural lake. And it was beautiful...
Here is more info:
Lake Phelps is North Carolina's second largest natural lake. It has a surface area of 16,600 acres (67 km2),[1] and it is located primarily in Washington County on the Albemarle-Pamlico Peninsula between the Albemarle Sound and the Pamlico Sound. The easternmost part of the lake extends into Tyrrell County. An Indian dugout canoe was found in the lake dating back nearly 4,400 years. Other artifiacts have been found around the area dating as early as 8,000 B.C.
Its origin has long puzzled scientists. Some say that its origin is underground springs, wave action, wind, a meteor, glacial activity or a peat burn. It is more or less a round shape.
Lake Phelps is named for Josiah Phelps, the first white man to enter its waters. Phelps and another colonial explorer, Benjamin Tarkington, were searching through what was then known as the Great Eastern Dismal or Great Alligator Dismal in 1755. Phelps and Tarkington were part of a group of hunters who entered the swamps in search of game and farmland. The group had become discouraged and were about to leave when Tarkington scaled one of the many trees and spotted the lake a short distance away. Phelps went ahead and ran into the water. As the first in the water he was given the honor of naming the lake.[2]
The lake was established as a North Carolina State Lake in 1929, and it is managed by the adjacent Pettigrew State Park.

SUMMARY
=======
Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1997, is a recent addition to the United States National Wildlife Refuge system. It is located in parts of northeastern Georgetown County, South Carolina, southern Horry, and southeastern Marion counties, and contains lands adjacent to the Pee Dee River, the Little Pee Dee River, and the Waccamaw River near their confluence. Currently the size of the refuge is 22,931 acres (92.80 km2) but plans call for the total refuge to be over 50,000 acres (200 km2).
It was founded to preserve valuable undeveloped coastal wetland and adjacent uplands that provide habitats for many species of wildlife. One endangered species that is given a home, primarily on longleaf pine forest on Sandy Island is the red-cockaded woodpecker. It is also a nesting area for swallow-tailed kites and bald eagles.
The stated objectives of this refuge are:
Provide habitat for waterfowl, shorebirds, wading birds, raptors, neo-tropical migratory birds, and resident species.
Environmental education and interpretation.
Provide opportunities for hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation. The Refuge visitor's center is located just north of Georgetown on Highway 701 overlooking the Great Pee Dee River in the small community of Yauhannah, SC.

Table Rock State Park South Carolina, Sacred Ground for Cherokee Indians
Troop 10 visited Table Rock State Park in Pickens County, SC. We hiked the 3.6-mile trail to the summit, 3124 feet above sea level, a round-trip about 4.5 hours in duration. Table Rock is a large granite-faced mountain on the Eastern Escarpment of the Blue Ridge Mountains. According to the Cherokee legend, a great spirit loomed over these mountains, casting a bluish haze over the area, giving the name to the Blue Ridge Mountains. The great spirit sat on nearby Stool Mountain to eat his meals on the flatter Table Rock.
The music in this video is a lady playing a Native American Courting Flute. I happened upon her sitting on the deck of the visitors center and was able to record her playing. Its peaceful tones seemed like the perfect backdrop to this story.
Table Rock State Park has primitive group camping areas for Scout groups and is open year-round. The hike to the summit is strenuous but the pay off at the top is an amazing view of the South Carolina Piedmont. I highly recommend this trip.
Carolina Rivers: Little Pee Dee River - A Gem do be Discovered (vignette)
The Little Pee Dee River is a 116-mile-long tributary of the Pee Dee River. The Little Pee Dee technically arises as Gum Swamp, flows southward receiving several small tributaries across the South Carolina border into Red Bluff Lake. From the outlet of the lake, the flow is called the Little Pee Dee River.
The Little Pee Dee is a sluggish meandering blackwater river. The people along the river tell stories of their childhood, about hunting and campaign trips and how to handle an encounter with one of the many snakes that live near the river.

Thousands of unique geologic features called Carolina Bays dot the SE United States. They resemble swamps and wetlands from the ground, but from the air they are all oval shapes and oriented in the same direction. How they formed is a mystery.
