Lake Waikaremoana New Zealand
Lake Waikaremoana or ''sea of rippling water'' in Maori is off the beaten track for most travelers to New Zealand. These easy walks around Lake Waikaremoana are short, leisurely and suitable for the whole family. See waterfalls, great views of the lake itself, rugged cliffs and sandy beaches.

The lake lies in the heart of Tuhoe country. The hamlet of Āniwaniwa and the Waikaremoana Holiday Park are located on the lakeshore, along SH38 (from Wai-O-Tapu via Murupara to Wairoa), which connects the lake to the central North Island (Rotorua) and Gisborne. There is a Department of Conservation office at Aniwaniwa. Several walks start here, including a short stroll to Aniwaniwa Falls.
Lake Waikaremoana is a holiday destination by people who use the lake for fishing, tramping and other recreational activities. The Lake Waikaremoana Track, one of New Zealand's Great Walks, is a three to four-day tramp which follows approximately half of the lake's circumference.

The Lake Waikaremoana Track, one of New Zealand's Great Walks, is a three to four-day tramp which follows approximately half of the lake's circumference. The track can be walked independently, or as part of a guided group. There are huts dotted on the walk which require booking to use. Camping is permitted unless you are more than 500 metres from the track.
Numbers of visitors to the area are mitigated by the unsealed road that must be taken to reach it. The smaller Lake Waikareiti lies four kilometres to the northeast.
Walking the prehistoric Lake Waikaremoana Track!
The Lake Waikaremoana Track would be our third Great walk, after having completed the Milford Track last year, and the Heaphy Track only a few weeks earlier.
Nestled deep in the Te Urewera Forest, on the North Island of New Zealand sits Lake Waikaremoana. This is an area rich in Maori history and the rainforest around here dates back to prehistoric times.
The clear blue water of the lake is mesmerizing and on hot days incredibly inviting for a swim.
We walked the track from Onepoto to Hopuruahine over four days, at a leisurely pace. At this speed, you have plenty of time to relax at the huts and to venture off on various detours. The favourite indeed was the walk to Korokoro falls, an absolutely magical place.
Shot in New Zealand on the 6:th-9:th of January, 2017.
Equipment used:
iPhone 7 Plus, DJI Osmo Mobile
Edited and Color Graded in Final Cut Pro X.
(For some reason the quality settings in the Osmo was reset to 720p after half the hike which I did not discover until the very last day.)

The Lake Waikaremoana Track, located in the south-west corner of the Te Urewera National Park on central North Island, New Zealand, is a 46 km 3 days tramping track. It follows the shore of the lake for most of its length. The track with its highest point (Puketapu Trig--1180 m) at Panekire Bluffs traverses the largest area of native forest in the North Island. The 30 minutes sidetrack to the beautiful Korokoro Falls is worth a detour.

Lake Waikaremoana - New Zealand Great Walk - Shot in 4k DJI Osmo Pocket
In late November I walked the Lake Waikaremoana Great walk on the North Island of New Zealand. I brought along my DJI Osmo Pocket to record the trip.
The first day we walked to Panekire Hut, high up on the range that extends along the west of the lake. Day two we walked along to Maruiti Hut, getting caught in a massive rain storm, and on the third day, walked to the Water Taxi pickup near the end of the track.
Shot in 4k on the DJI Osmo Pocket. Edited in Premiere Pro. Music licensed via Soundstripe.

My Wharekanikani - Waikaremoana Taumataua Reserve
Taumataua Reserve is a land block around the shores of Lake Waikaremoana located on the east ranges of the North Island New Zealand. Approximately 70 ks from Wairoa we are part of this District Council and Region. Ivan Turipa DanGilbert and Neuton Lambert talk casually about when their ancestors lived on this land. Ivan talks about the old Tipuna Whare, that a possum hunter put a Chimney into the Whare so that he could live in it and cook food in it, this he did without asking the descendants of Taumataua, Waikaremoana, and of course this chimney caught on fire and burnt the Tipuna Whare to the ground. Worthy of note that is why Maori never cook or put a Chimney into a Whare Tipuna that is the domain of sleeping only.
